Couple builds front gate, fences -

Even though the residential estate is gated and guarded, without front gates and fences around the individual houses, their homes are in danger of burglary and intruders,
Lim Yim Kin, 58, said her house had been broken into twice since she moved in last May.
"We lost a stainless steel ladder and a few pairs of branded shoes that cost about RM1,000 in total," she said at a press conference at Ferringhi Park, recently.
Although that isn't much, the knowledge that anyone can just walk up to her front door is worrying.
Lim, who paid RM1.88 million for the three-storey semi-detached unit, said she and her husband Tan Swee Aik, 63, had raised their concerns about security with the developer about the open concept, which is common in the West, but they were assured that the neighbourhood would be safe.
"After our house was broken into, we lodged police reports... the developer actually called us after that and scolded us for taking the matter to the police.
"When we decided to put up our own gate and fences to beef up the security at our house, some people came and stopped us... they warned us that we would get into trouble if we did that," she claimed.
Lim said each household paid a monthly maintenance fee of RM500 but there were only two security guards there and no closed circuit television (CCTV) at all.
There are 32 houses in the relatively new residential estate and most of the units are still unoccupied.
Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik, whom the couple approached for help, advised the residents to form a Joint Management Body (JMB) to ensure that their interests and safety were protected

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 Repressive laws that saw a Johor resort operator arrested for letting Buddhists use a Muslim prayer room are creating further barriers between the religions in multicultural Malaysia, non-Muslim leaders said today
Rev Dr Hermen Shastri, the general secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM), said that during an international interfaith conference between Muslims and Christians he attended in Indonesia last May, Christian participants were taken to the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, where they could observe Muslim prayers and also engage in their own prayers in another room in Southeast Asias largest mosque.
Today, the authorities are building fences to keep religions apart by restrictive regulations, Shastri told The Malay Mail Online via email today.
It offers a poor witness to the hospitality that lies at the centre of all faiths. How can interfaith relations be built up if people cant come into contact and appreciate the religious houses of others? added the representative of the umbrella body of Protestant churches.
On Monday, a resort operator in Johor was arrested by the police for injuring or defiling a place of worship after he allegedly allowed Buddhist tourists to pray in a surau (Muslim prayer room) in the hotel.
This followed several media reports highlighting a video uploaded to YouTube showing the incident.
The 85-second video starts with an external shot of a small building and a close-up of what appears to be a sign in Arabic script over a doorway, before going on to show what resembles a prayer session inside the building by a dozen people clad in white, led by a monk in red and saffron.
The resort operator was reported by Malay-language daily Berita Harian last Monday as saying that he did not intend to hurt anyones feelings by allowing Buddhists to use the surau, as other halls in the resort were full.
My intention is to show that Islam is universal and tolerant, the Singapore-born Muslim, who has permanent residence in Malaysia, was quoted as saying.
Johor Islamic Religious Council adviser Datuk Nooh Gadut reportedly said yesterday that the surau in the resort may be demolished as it has been used by non-Muslims for worship.

Texans oppose more border fences -
August 13, 2013 by

LOS EBANOS, Texas If Congress agrees on a comprehensive immigration reform bill, it will probably include a requirement to erect fencing that would wrap more of the nations nearly 2,000-mile Southwest border in tall steel columns.
But the mandate would essentially double down on a strategy that U.S. Customs and Border Protection isnt even sure works. And the prospect of the government seizing more land offends many property owners here in the southernmost tip of Texas, where hundreds of people already lost property during the last fence construction spree.
Im still totally against it, said Aleida Garcia, who was among the Los Ebanos residents whose land was taken back in 2008, when this hamlet surrounded on three sides by the Rio Grande was slated to get a U-shaped segment of fencing.
Given the choice, Garcia said, she would rather have more agents patrolling the area. At least that would create some jobs, she added.
The regions lawmakers appear to agree. Three Democratic congressmen from the Texas border who support immigration reform have announced that they would not support any bill conditioned on the construction of more border fence.
It doesnt do what proponents think it does, said Rep. Filemon Vela, of Brownsville, who resigned from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in protest. Building more fence makes no sense to me.
The fences backers say its a common-sense solution to keeping people from crossing the porous border.
The strip of land bisecting Garcias La Paloma Ranch was eventually returned after the bi-national agency that monitors border treaties said the fence couldnt be built in a flood plain. But those objections were dropped last year, and the U.S. government has resumed planning for that fence.
The government is still in court with Texas landowners over the fencing built here last time. And yet, despite the existing barrier, the area leads the border in illegal-entry arrests.
Now the Senates immigration bill calls for at least 700 miles of border fencing half of which already exists.
