Franchitti OK, but catch fences still need examining - October 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The good news is that Dario Franchitti looks like he will fully recover from Sundays horrific crash at the IZOD IndyCar Series Grand Prix of Houston.

Actually that is about the only good news in this whole mess.

IndyCar bosses must all have had four leaf glovers in their pockets because what could have been a full blown deadly disaster was miraculously avoided.

Just to recap, Franchitti was coming around a high-speed corner, likely at near 175 m.p.h., when Takuma Sato slowed in front of him.

Franchittis No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda clipped Satos rear tire sending it up into the catch fence, scattering bits of carbon fibre and metal and part of the fence itself into the nearby grandstand injuring 13 fans.

Again, luckily, none were seriously hurt.

It was, however, just the latest in a series of crashes into the so-called catch fences that needs much closer scrutiny.

Orioles' Triple-A affiliate Norfolk getting a stadium facelift, shorter fences - October 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Eduardo A. Encina The Baltimore Sun

    8:43 a.m. EDT, October 7, 2013

Harbor Park, the home of the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate Norfolk Tides, is currently undergoing a major facelift thatshould affect the way games are played there.

While a new natural playing surface is being installed for the first time since the stadium opened back in 1993, the outfield fences also will be moved in 10 feet in center field and the left-center and right-center field power alleys.

Harbor Parks current dimensions -- 333 feet to left, 410 to center and 318 feet to right -- dont seem imposing and are on par with Camden Yards, but it has long had the reputation of being a pitchers ballpark. The stadiums layout along the Elizabeth River contributes to balls dying in the outfield, even though last years home-run figures were higher than normal.

The hope is that moving in the fences will make the park play more true and help the organization evaluate its Triple-A players more evenly. For example, Orioles top position player Jonathan Schoop hit nine homers in 2013, but none came in 31 games at home. Nine of club home-run leader Jason Pridies 15 homers were hit away from Harbor Park.

The project is expected to take about six weeks.

The Orioles agreement with all of their minor league affiliates ends after the 2014 season, but the timing of the upgrades dont correlate with that fact, a club source said.

There is talk of the Orioles playing an exhibition game in Norfolk this spring after theirGrapefruit League schedule, but nothing has been finalized yet.

Houseworks: Building fences is a simple matter of design - October 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Those who followed last weeks column now have rows of fence posts standing sentinel in their yards.

Its time to get to the fun stuff.

Youll need three 2-by-4 stringers for each bay of the fence, assuming youre building a 5- or 6-foot privacy fence. A low, decorative fence (perhaps around the front yard) requires only two per bay.

Many people build fences with the same treated pine as their posts, but Ive found such lumber often twists as it dries (it has to be treated green, and usually its still curing when it gets to the lumber yard). I prefer cedar, which comes to me well cured and also smells nice when I cut it.

Start with the widest bay (wait for it, gang) and measure and cut those stringers to fit. If you cut one too short, save it for a narrower bay (see?). You want a snug fit.

Level the first stringer about 6 inches off the ground and nail it in place. If youre particularly anal, youll use galvanized steel brackets, much like joist hangers.

I prefer 16d galvanized finish nails that I can sink into the stringers for a tidy look, but you can use galvanized common nails or even deck screws instead. Just dont used steel nails or drywall screws, which would begin rusting almost immediately.

Level the second stringer midway up the posts, then the third at or near their tops, depending on your fence design. Whether your stringers are set flat or on edge also depends on the design. Well get to that.

    Finish filling in the bays.

If your fence line is level (its happened to me exactly twice in 30 years), the rest is a cinch. But if theres a slope or dip, you have to decide whether the pickets will follow that, creating a wavy fence top, or stair-step up or down the slope. That is, each bay will be level itself, but it wont match the bay next in line.

Fences installed on Westerly beach to curb erosion - October 8, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    AP/October 7, 2013

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) Volunteers have installed fences in the Misquamicut (mis-KWAH'-mih-kut) beach section of Westerly to help curb the kind of erosion that swept away much of the beach during Superstorm Sandy.

WPRI-TV (http://bit.ly/15VUq2q ) reports that the volunteer group Serve Rhode Island worked Sunday to install snow fencing. Resident Jim Kirker says that when the sand is blown against the fencing, it will accumulate rather than being swept off the beach.

Thats what happened last year when dunes were blown off the beach by Superstorm Sandy. The area was devastated by the storm, and many businesses were filled with sand from the beach.

Residents have also planted beach grass to help keep the sand in place.
