Fence plan to stop garden trespassers - January 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

John Curtis, head of the Community Interest Company that runs Ventnor Botanic Garden.

FENCES will be erected at Ventnor Botanic Garden to stop people sneaking in without paying.

Businessman John Curtis, who heads the community interest company which owns the Isle of Wight attraction, has been shocked at the number of people avoiding paying the 6.75 admission fee.

With annual estimated visitor totals at just 55,000 well below the current number needed to break even he has reluctantly decided to strengthen fences.

He was finally persuaded following an altercation between a trespasser and a legitimate visitor in which the visitor was upset by being cajoled for being honest.

"People would not expect to be able to gain admission to other Island attractions without paying," he said.

A 50-year masterplan for the gardens development was expected to include initial submissions for grant aid, philanthropic support and corporate sponsorship totalling up to 3 million.

Mr Curtis said he had pumped in capital investment of more than 300,000 in 18 months more than the Isle of Wight Council did in the preceding ten years.

Cong confident of mending fences with National Conference - January 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Despite the simmering differences between the Congress and its ally in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference, the Congress today appeared confident that the problems would be resolved soon. The two parties who are allies since 2008, are divided over the proposed restructuring of administrative units in the state.

While Chief minister Omar Abdullah had dug in his heels over the National Conferences intent to set up 700 new administrative units in the state, the Congress he alleged was stalling it. Omar Abdullah was reportedly contemplating stepping down if this move was thwarted.

Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala today stated, That's the beauty of democracy. Allies are entitled to their opinion. We'll sort this out when we sit together.

Till late last night Congress senior leaders met in the capital to make headway on the issue.

Tara Chand Sharma, a senior Congress leader and deputy chief minister of the state, who attended the meeting told PTI that the Congress was now contemplating 2000 or so administrative units. The Mushtaq Ganaie Committee had recommended 700 new administrative units but the figure may go up to 2000 or more, he said. The committee had proposed reorganising the structure to bring administration to people's doorsteps.

NC chief Farooque Abdullah also a Union Minister, told journalists that Omar is said to be thinking of resigning over the issue and would take the final call on the alliance. "This is not going to benefit one party but credit will go to both the parties," Abdullah said.

There are some people with vested interests who are trying to create mistrust between the coalition partners, added Abdullah. In the 87-member assembly while the NC has 28 members, the Congress has 17 MLAs.

Lenny Henry wins best actor at Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Denzel Washington won a Tony award for playing the role on Broadway and Henry admitted: If Id thought about that going in, I wouldnt have left the house.

Previous Critics' Circle winners include Sir Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Sir Ian McKellen.

Asked if serious drama was his true calling, Henry said: There is a sense of wrong ladder against wrong building syndrome. I love stand-up; I know Im not everybodys cup of tea, but who is?

But its a bit like a big finger from heaven going, Youve done that for 37 years, you bought your mum a house, there is no shame in it but this is the thing you should be doing. Focus on this, Len.

A text and a dressing room and a few weeks to explore is what I love. Comedys great and very difficult to do, but Ive really felt at home doing this."

Henry has been a fixture on British television since appearing on New Faces in 1975, aged just 16. He appeared in Tiswas, the childrens Saturday morning series, Three of a Kind and The Lenny Henry Show, and latterly has been the face of Comic Relief.

Although he moved into straight acting in the 1990s, in the BBC series Chef! and Hope and Glory, the announcement of his Shakespearean debut in a 2009 production of Othello was regarded in some quarters as a gimmick.

Yet he proved the doubters wrong and the production transferred to the West End. Henry returned to Shakespeare in 2011, playing Antipholus of Syracuse in The Comedy of Errors.

Fences, directed by Paulette Randall, represented a new challenge. The three-hour play was, in Henrys own words, a mammoth undertaking for any actor, let alone one with no formal drama training.

Henry appeared in every scene. He explained: It has as many words as King Lear. With Othello you could go to the loo six times and have a cup of tea. With Fences you had to make sure every drop had been wrung out of you at the beginning of the play because you were not going to have a chance to go anywhere until the interval. It was very hard work."

Deer set to be culled at Sellafield in Cumbria - January 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Last updated at 16:04, Sunday, 26 January 2014

A HERD of deer is set to be culled after being trapped between two fences at Sellafield.

The wild roe deer are to be shot after it emerged that their habitat has been enclosed in a large area between two newly-erected security fences at the sites south perimeter.

Sellafield Ltd is acting on the advice of experts from the Deer Initiative Partnership (DIP), who say that the most humane and practical course of action is to cull the animals, thought to be between five and 15 in number. The cull will take place between February and April.

However, neighbouring Seascale Parish Council has strongly objected to the unnecessary move.

Councillor David Ritson said: This seems a quick, convenient and cheap fix for a problem for which there is another solution.

Would it not be a better and more humane solution to temporarily remove one section of fence and herd the offending animals back into the natural environment where they could live a free life, continuing to provide pleasure for those who seem and to enhance our beautiful Cumbrian landscape?

Sellafield Ltd says that this option had been considered by its own wildlife team and the DIP experts on whose advice it is acting.

A spokesperson said: Their advice to us was that deer are not animals which are easy to round up, as they tend to run and hide when spooked.

The experts felt that the deer would try and hide deep in the thicket and, in all likelihood, cause themselves serious injury in doing so.
