After the opulent sporting venues, hundreds of box hotels, the freshly built amusement park, the new roads and train lines, the colorful, if questionable, brick boardwalk along the Black Sea, and the waterfront "McMansions" (strangely unoccupied) after all of that the first thing you notice in Adler are the fences.
The fences are everywhere.
They are a metallic construct with a stonewall design on the bottom and five wide, brown, faux-wood slats rising up to about eight feet. They line roads, run along back alleys and sometimes fence in other fences.
Government contractors threw them up all over the place, locals say, to keep tourist eyes from seeing what's behind them: construction sites, swamp, poverty in other words, Adler.
These are officially the Sochi Olympics, but the games are not being played in Sochi. They are happening in unheralded Adler, technically a microdistrict (in Russian city planning parlance) of Sochi, its larger neighbour up the coast.
Adler is the town the Olympics ignore and the Russians prefer you not see behind the fences. Yet it is especially the area south of Olympic Park the center of Vladimir Putin's big, bold bet to turn this sleepy village, once mostly swampland hard by the closed border of Abkhazia, into an international vacation destination.
Adler is very much its own world, different from Sochi, whose city centre takes two buses and a 45-minute train ride to reach. That is if you can afford the train. Many here can't. Then it's two hours by bus, they say.
Putin promised the International Olympic Committee that if it awarded Russia the 2014 Winter Games, he would essentially construct a new city to host them. He estimated he had just 10 percent to 15 percent of the infrastructure.

A FLEEING drink-driver, eventually run down by Warrnambool police officers after he crashed into two house fences and narrowly missed a woman, has just managed to avoid going to jail.
A FLEEING drink-driver, eventually run down by Warrnambool police officers after he crashed into two house fences and narrowly missed a woman, has just managed to avoid going to jail.
Benjamin Robert Knight, 31, of Hopetoun Road, Warrnambool, appeared in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court this week for a contest mention hearing.
After a sentence indication from Victorian chief magistrate Peter Lauritsen, the accused man pleaded guilty to a reduced number of charges knowing he would not go straight to prison.
Those charges included reckless conduct endangering life, unlicensed driving, failing to stop when requested by police and drink-driving (.135).
Mr Lauritsen said if Knight had contested the charges and they were proven, he could have expected to serve 12 months in prison.
Knight received a 12-month jail sentence which was suspended for two years. He was also disqualified from obtaining a drivers licence for 26 months.
Police alleged that on November 16 last year Knight and his partner were drinking at the Whalers Hotel before leaving at 1.10am.
Police saw Knights vehicle out of control and swaying across Mortlake Road about 2am.

Police chase crash driver avoids jail
CARSON (CBSLA.com) The Carson Planning Commission has backed down on a controversial plan that would prohibit the use of chain-link fences in residential neighborhoods.
The commission was set to vote Tuesday night on the proposed ban, which would have also prohibited any fence over four feet tall that faces the street.
Residents, however, showed up at the meeting to speak out against the idea.
The city of Carson is not Palos Verdes and its going to be a hardship for most of these people, resident Douglas Chaney said.
While the city agreed to postpone the vote indefinitely, they said the issue will be revisited someday.
It will come up again; well just have to come back and keep fighting, Chaney said.
Last month, a vote to prohibit chain-link fences for businesses was also postponed.
Ten cities in Los Angeles County, including Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach and Torrance, do not allow chain-link fences.
