Boys' and Girls' Fencing
North Haven girls' fencing senior captain Reagan Fitzgerald earned First Team All-State honors for the second straight season by placing second in the foil competition at the Individual State Championship at Hopkins on March 1. Fitzgerald, who had finished fourth last winter, won nine bouts, including four while facing elimination to reach the title bout, where she dropped a close decision to Nicole Kogan of Hopkins.
"Reagan was unwavering in her determination and focus, leading to a dominating performance," Coach Pete Solomon said. "She and all her teammates fought for every point and are poised for an exciting run at this weekend's Team Championship [in Guilford on Saturday, March 8]."
Also placing in the top 16 in their respective brackets for the Indians were Stephanie Hoang for girls' foil, Lia Crowley and Yicai Wang for girls' pe, and Binli Huang for boys' foil. Wang won and elimination match against last year's runner-up and Huang, a junior, dominated his early matches, according to Coach Solomon.

North Haven posted a score of 932 to take fifth place at the State Championship at Blue Trails Range in Wallingford on Feb. 26. The Indians' score was 12 points better than their season average and tied for best mark they've shot in two years. Suffield posted a total of 959 out of 1,000 to win the meet.
North Haven's scorers were Jordan DeLucia (189 out of 200), Kevin Landino (188), Jeremy Piercey (187), John Quimby (186), and Brendan Quinn (182). DeLucia tied his all-time top mark with the 189 and Matt Christoforo recorded his best career score with a 165.
"Overall, I am very proud of our performance. Our goal going into this was to meet or beat our average and we did this," Coach Brent Heidenis said. "Our athletes are proud of their efforts this year and we will now take the time to cherish the Central Conference championship. We look forward to returning back to states next year and making another run at the conference title."

In West Africa it is said that when a griot dies, a library burns to the ground.
With this philosophy in mind, Cheo Tyehimba founded theMuseum of the African Diasporas Ive Known Rivers project in December 2005. Since then, the endeavor has blossomed into an expansive six-volume digital collection of oral histories. Through first-person essays, photo montages, poetry, audio interviews, and streaming video content, the project documents the experiences of people of African descent throughout the United States and in places as diverse as Bosnia, Brazil, Haiti, and South Africa.
The latest volume, Crossing Fences (which is still under production), captures the stories of multigenerational men of African descent who live in Oakland. With this project, Tyehimba hopes to answer the question What is that knowledge that is across the fence that we dont always have access to between elders and young men in [the black] community?
In a sneak peek of Crossing Fences, which was shown at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco last Thursday, African-American men and teenagers engaged in startlingly honest discussions on a broad scope of issues: the emotionally charged meaning of fatherhood in the black community, the psychological pain and numbness found in violent social environments, and the idealistic dreams of black millennials.
The completed Crossing Fences will feature a culturally rich mosaic of oral histories as told by teenagers, adults, and even a supercentenarian (meaning a person who is more than 110 years old). One intended interviewee, Andrew Hatch, a 115-year-old Oakland resident, has a wealth of intriguing stories to tell for example, he was once imprisoned in Irving, Texas for the reckless eyeballing of an attractive white woman, an illegal offense at the time. However, Hatch, a locksmith, was able to pick the lock of his jail cell, hop a boxcar, and flee to Mexico, where he lived for several years before moving to Oakland in 1933.
In addition to providing a sneak peak of film footage on Thursday night, Tyehimba interviewed a cross-generational panel of men in order to offer a glimpse into the kinds of candid, poignant, and occasionally hilarious conversations that Crossing Rivers will feature.
Panelist Spencer Whitney, a recent graduate of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, expressed sadness that black children and teenagers in Oakland often feel confined to specific geographical spaces and, as a result, are left unexposed to cultures and experiences outside of their neighborhoods. Mentally, it has become so ingrained in a lot of communities, especially African-American communities, said Whitney. You have internalized that there are places you cant go, and while those places arent necessarily segregated, its segregated in your mind.
Meanwhile, Zef Amen, an entrepreneur and public speaker, emphasized the degree to which black aesthetics pervade mainstream American culture, affecting the lexicons, dance moves, and mannerisms of people whose skin colors come in all shades. At the end of the day, we know were beautiful, said Amen. Elvis knew the aesthetic was beautiful. Bieber knows it! Amen urged black men to see themselves not through a lens of oppression or through a lens of cultural outsiders, but through a lens of their own creation, which is more expansive and luminous than anything that has existed before it.
Once Crossing Fences is completed, a selection of its most compelling first-voice narratives will be commissioned by artists, poets, dancers, and dramatists who will transform the stories into theatrical pieces to be performed in churches throughout Oakland. These performance pieces will provide a new living, breathing medium through which the evolving African-American experience can be explored and celebrated.
The first collection of narratives from Crossing Fences will be uploaded onto theIve Known Rivers websiteby early June 2014. The rest of the digital archive is availablehere.

Bridge fences
Enough is enough. Its about time we gave this bridge a break. When people want to end their life, they come to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. Its about time they put up some safety rails and fences to stop people from jumping off this bridge. They put up those fences in Augusta, why not here on this bridge?
Lets stop this by installing some high fences so that it will be impossible for anyone to climb over. It will be a lot better to see those fences than to see the Coast Guard pulling a body out from under this nice bridge.

While the University of Maine mens basketball team admittedly has a history of being not very good, this season has brought about new lows. With only three wins in America East this season, Maine has dropped to 337 out of 351 Division I programs in a well-respected college basketball power ranking list at http://www.kenpom.com. Its time for there to be accountability for their overall lack of competitiveness, and that accountability starts at the top. On behalf of Fill The Steins Nation, its time for University of Maine Coach Ted Woodward to resign.
Woodward is now in his tenth season as coach. In that time, the teams overall record is 116-174 (40 percent winning percentage) and 65-95 (40.62 percent) in America East. Maine has had one winning season (2009-10) during Woodwards tenure and has seen the win total decline in each of the last four seasons. The level of patience shown for Woodward by the athletic department is admirable. However alumni, supporters and fans eventually deserve to see sustained competitiveness.
Maine will never be a basketball school; hockey will always come first. That doesnt mean we should accept a mens basketball team that is uncompetitive more often than not. Both John Giannini and Rudy Keeling took Maine to the conference tournament final as Maines head coach. Theres no reason to think the right coach cant do that again, particularly in the traditionally weak America East. After a decade of mediocrity-at-best, Woodward has proven to not be that coach.

Verdict
Moscow Mannon was having only his second start over fences when storming to a 15-length victory at Naas and is a very smart chasing prospect. However, he was beaten over hurdles by MALLOWNEY on that track a year ago and the latter has hardly stood still over fences. Although beaten by Back Before Dawn at Navan last time, when Some Tikket fell when under pressure, that was a Grade 2 and the winner is another very promising type. Timothy Doyle's charge was still in touch when falling in a Grade 1 here earlier and can come out best this time. Darwins Fox is a stable companion of Moscow Mannon but carries a penalty for a very easy Grade 3 victory at Roscommon and has plenty to do. Mount Colah was behind the selection at Fairyhouse in December and Is Herself About, an easy debut winner over fences at Clonmel, will find these rivals much tougher.
Mount Colah (IRE) 6-4fav (11-7) Chased leader, led after 3rd, travelled well in lead when bad mistake last, soon headed, ridden and rallied run-in to lead again closing stages, won at Thurles 2m beg chase sft in Jan beating Katnap (11-12) by 3/4l, 16 ran.
Moscow Mannon (IRE) 13-8 (11-12) Chased leader in 2nd, led 5 out, went clear run-in, easily, won at Naas 2m beg chase in Feb beating Abbey Lane (11-12) by 15l, 16 ran.
Mallowney (IRE) 13-8 (11-4) Prominent and disputed lead, led before 4th, headed entering straight and ridden after 2 out, no impression on winner last and no extra run-in, 2nd of 5, 7l behind Bright New Dawn (11-4) at Navan 2m 1f nov chs G2 (1) hvy in Feb.
Is Herself About (IRE) 3-1 (11-5) Soon raced in moderate 2nd, closed from 5th, led 4 out, clear from next, reduced lead from before 2 out but still going smoothly, left clear and stayed on well from last, comfortably,, won at Clonmel 2m beg chs gd in Dec beating Treat Yourself (11-12) by 11l, 6 ran.
Some Tikket (IRE) 9-2 (11-4) Tracked leaders in 4th, pushed along and no impression in 4th when badly hampered and unseated rider 3 out, in a race won by Bright New Dawn (11-4) at Navan 2m 1f nov chs G2 (1) hvy in Feb, 5 ran.
Darwins Fox (FR) 13-8 (11-8) Tracked leaders in 3rd, pushed along early straight and no extra in 3rd approaching last, 3rd of 5, 10l behind Art Of Logistics (11-0) at Punchestown 2m 2f nov chs (1) gd in Oct.
