Athletic association to repair fences at Penglyn Field - May 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Published: Wednesday, May 21, 2014, 9:00p.m. Updated 22 hours ago

Irwin Council has approved a request by the Norwin Community Athletic Association to repair fencing at Penglyn Field and will allow the organization to play baseball tournament games on several Sundays this summer.

Officials unanimously approved a $4,200 contract for Redrock Fence Co. in White Oak on May 14 to refurbish the chain-link backstops on both baseball fields, as well as the two baseline fences at each of the diamonds.

Jim Halfhill, the borough supervisor of public works, said the work is needed because the poor condition of the chain-link fencing is a safety hazard.

The mesh has come loose along the fences and could be dangerous for the kids playing there, he said. We need to do those repairs before somebody is hurt.

Halfhill said other work at the field to improve drainage, which he estimates would cost about $4,000, would have to be addressed in the 2015 borough budget.

Money for the fence repairs will come from the borough's capital reserve fund, borough manager Mary Benko said.

Council also approved a request by the athletic association's president, Tom Hussey, to use the fields on four Sundays this summer for a tournament that is in the works.

The league does not currently play Sunday games at the field, Hussey said.

If enough teams sign up for the tournament, the league would play games on June 29 and July 13, 20 and 27.

Willard Bay to reopen after yearlong wait - May 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A clean creek with vegetation flows at Willard Bay State Park's North Marina on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. The marina has been closed since a fuel spill last year. Earlier this year, state officials approved a $5.35 million settlement with Chevron over the pipeline leak, which released about 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

    Laura Seitz, Deseret News

WILLARD, Box Elder County After more than a year, fences are down and Willard Bay's Eagle Beach will reopen Saturday, just in time for Memorial Day.

"We've got people who are excited to get back out here and recreate," said James Morgan, Willard Bay State Park manager. "We also have the people who are hesitant to come back out because of what happened."

Morgan assures wary guests they have nothing to worry about. Utah's Division of Water Quality has tested the water for safety hazards and has determined it's clean.

Cleanup crews have worked since March 2013 to reinvent the bay after a Chevron diesel pipeline burst, spilling 600 barrels of fuel.

The spill posed a threat to recreational users and wildlife, forcing state park officials to close the area until it could be cleaned.

The shutdown turned away nearly 250,000 visitors, park officials said. However, the wait is nearly over, and families are encouraged to celebrate Willard Bay's reopening from 10 am. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature food and live music.

Chris Bittner, an environmental toxicologist with the DWQ, said state officials had hoped to open the bay sooner but wanted to be sure it was safe.

"There has been a lot of work done on it," Bittner said. "I wish it happened quicker, but sometimes doing it right takes longer."

Ten Facebook pages that will get Melbourne talking - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Melburnians are finding creative ways to share what they love about their unique city on social media. Whether having a giggle at some of our worst parkers, funniest fences or hunting for Melbourne's best vintage treasures and tastiest chicken parmigianas, these are the Facebook pages we think will get people talking.

    1. Sh-- brick fences of Melbourne

At first, badly constructed brick fences may seem an odd subject to document around our fine city yet Steve* couldn't stop noticing them. He mentioned it to friends.

"People would then complain that I had them now distracted by something inane that they'd never bothered to think about," he said.

He then made a Facebook page so he could distract us all and has attracted more than 20,000 likes since April.

Steve thinks there is something quintessentially Melbourne about his page that features photos of brick fences with witticisms about each.

"The size of the suburban block, the strange insistence we have here in demarcating our plots, the proliferation of brick veneer houses in the seventies, and you can't get away from it but our Mediterranean friends gave us food, friendships and bricklaying in abundance," he said.

You'll never look at a brick fence the same way again.

Budget like a fire brigade knocking down fences as it fights fiscal blaze, says PM Tony Abbott - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the budget as a "fire brigade" putting out a fiscal fire, as he battles to sell the tax hikes and billions of dollars in spending cuts announced last week.

Mr Abbott has taken his post-budget sales tour to Victoria, where he cancelled a visit to Deakin University due to security concerns ahead of expected student protests.

Acknowledging the backlash to the budget measures which showed up in dire polls for the Coalition earlier this week, the Prime Minister said he intended to improve his Government's standing, but the budget was not about being popular.

"You see, we had a fire, and the budget is the fire brigade. And sure, sometimes the fire brigade knocks over a few fences in order to put out the fire. But if you've got a fire you've got to put it out," he told 774 ABC Melbourne's Jon Faine.

Later, he said the Government had put itself in "political jeopardy" to do what was right, even to the extent of losing the next federal election.

"First-term governments are not invulnerable and obviously governments can lose elections. No doubt about that," he told Fairfax Radio.

But he said the budget pain now may pay off in the form of tax cuts in a second-term Abbott government.

"I would like to be in a position to offer tax cuts in our next term," he said.

"At the moment I'm certainly not guaranteeing that or promising it, but the whole point of getting the budget under control now... is so that we can give tax cuts in the not too distant future."

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says the budget has revealed the Government's values, and Australians "don't like them".
