As someone who grew up with only a sister, plays about brothers (like True West) have never spoken to me. But plays about fathers and sons? Hoo boy.

So take it with the smallest grain of salt when I say People's Light and Theatre Company's staging of August Wilson's Fences is one of the best productions I've seen in years. No small part of this success stems from Wilson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning script, whose conflicts could have constituted three separate plays.

Set in 1957, Fences concerns the extended family of African American patriarch Troy Maxon, played by Michael Genet. A city sanitation worker, he rages that there are no black drivers, risking his position with resentment held over from his time in the Negro Leagues, when baseball's majors still barred black athletes. Through grueling workweeks, Troy virtuously (and at times, viciously) protects and supports his wife Rose (the exceptional Melanye Finister), their teenage son Cory (Ruffin Prentiss), Cory's half-brother Lyons (Wendell Franklin), and Troy's wounded veteran brother, Gabriel (G. Alvarez Reid).

Kamilah Forbes' unflinching direction refuses to sugarcoat any of their struggles, nor does she once apologize for the means each uses to solve them. Finister leads an excellent ensemble that also includes Troy's best friend, Bono (Brian Anthony Wilson), and Troy's daughter, Raynell (Cameron Hicks), the product of an affair.

For nearly three hours I sat riveted, the intensity of the production and Genet's magnificent performance leaving me to wonder whether I've ever cared this much about my own family. Though he is the shortest member of the cast, Genet towers over them, thundering as he thumps his chest and terrifying when he threatens. The audience applauded his ethical admonitions, laughed loudly at his often self-deprecating bravado, sat in silence at his hypocrisy.

Like any father, Genet's Troy both basks and suffers in these contradictions of outwardly loving too little while controlling too much, knowing he harms while trying to do good. He leaves a family that reveres his efforts, chafes at the self-sacrifices he redirects back at them, and endures under the long shadow he casts over their lives, and this production - a shadow that lingers long after he passes.

Seattle-based singer-songwriter Fences (real name Christopher Mansfield) premiered his new song, Arrows, on local station KEXP today. The track features longtime pals Macklemore and was produced by Ryan Lewis.

This is the first new musical offering from the pair since their multi-Grammy-winning platinum-certified 2012 album, The Heist.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have a long history with Fences, who is featured on the duos 2011 fan favorite Otherside Remix and also has a writing credit on The Heist opener Ten Thousand Hours.

Arrows is the first single from Fences album Lesser Oceans, which comes out on Elektra Records Oct. 14 and is available for pre-sale beginning today at all digital retailers. All those who order the album will receive instant downloads of Arrows and the album track, Songs About Angels.

Fences is a good friend," said Macklemore. "Hes fed up in the same way that Im fed up. Because of that, our lives relate beyond the music. Ive always admired his talent for illustrating with words and evoking imagery. Weve made a bunch of stuff together over the years and this here song about Arrows is my favorite one weve done."

On the collaboration for Arrows, Mansfield explains: I have known Macklemore for quite some time. A friendship grown in the coffee shops and broken sidewalks of Seattle. We became sounding boards for each others music and when it made sense we would combine our efforts. I consider him to be a fearless poet and a selfless human. Arrows is the peak of our mountain.

Lesser Oceans, the follow-up to 2010s Fences features, in addition to Macklemore andRyan Lewis Benjamin Greenspan and Lindsey Starr as well as production from such studio luminaries as Jacquire King (Of Monsters and Men, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse) and Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, The Lonely Forest).

Mansfield's songs are powerful, beautifully melodic magnets, stated Elektra Records President Jeff Castelaz, attracting the downtrodden, the disaffected, the depressed. He makes music for people who are looking for their next best friend to be 10 stories that spin in a circle of 12-inch black vinyl. He makes music for people who simply love being fans of music.

Fences first got underway in Boston, with Mansfield attending Berklee College of Music while also perfecting his songcraft. He relocated to the Pacific Northwest and in 2008, self-released his first Fences recordings as the now rare Ultimate Puke EP. Fences self-titled debut co-produced by Sara Quin of Tegan & Sara was named by SPIN among its 10 Best Albums You Might Have Missed This Year.

Mr Dyer, 41, told how he was chatting on the doorstep with his family when he spotted smoke billowing from the dogs home at about 7pm on Thursday evening.

Dropping everything, he shouted to his stepson and nephew to follow him, and began vaulting over garden fences towards the blazing building.

As they got closer, the trio could hear panicked yelps from the dogs in their cages. By the time Mr Dyer arrived, followed by Mr Vere, 25, and Mr Rostock, 25, the fire had already destroyed part of the kennels reserved for dogs ready for adoption.

Despite the intense flames and smoke, the three men ran to the front desk and grabbed armfuls of dog leads. As they ran towards the cages, the heat was shattering nearby windows, leaving broken glass strewn on the floor.

Some of the dogs were barking in panic. Others were cowering in their cages. There were huskies there, pitbulls, terriers, poodles, and Leo, a two-year-old bichon fris.

Without keys to let the terrified animals out, Mr Dyer and his helpers began kicking at the cages to force them open. As the three men raced back and forth, the flames licked their way along the line of kennels.

The three of us just dropped everything and jumped over three 10ft high fences and got into the premises, recalled Mr Dyer, We got in and just started kicking the cages open.

It was a nightmare. There was so much going on and in the back on your mind you knew there were dogs being burned alive in there.

We didnt see them burning, thank God, because that would have been an image I would never have erased from my mind.

The part of the building those poor dogs were in was collapsed and totally in ruin by this point nothing could have survived that.
