Williams had reservations about Court Minstrel being a natural chaser after his schooling had only been average, but the Llancarfan handler had to alter his opinion when the seven-year-old put in a good clear round of jumping on the way to a smooth success.
Only four runners lined up for the South West Racing Club Novices' Chase, and as the betting suggested it turned into a duel between Court Minstrel (evens) and the 10-11 favourite Keltus.
Keltus made the running but Court Minstrel enjoyed being given a lead and travelled comfortably in the hands of Paul Moloney.
Asked to take command, Court Minstrel put the race to bed in the straight to win by two and a quarter lengths. The first two pulled 36 lengths clear of Ladies Dancing in third.
"I was probably a bit pessimistic before as his schooling had only been OK and that had been off an synthetic surface," said Williams.
"There is no doubt that when he got some decent fast ground he found an inch or two and I thought he jumped exceptionally well.
"The second horse is a very good standard and I think we can only have positives.
"I was only 50-50 whether he would take to jumping fences. After today I'm 100 per cent. I suppose the logical place we will go to now is Cheltenham (next month) for the novice chase there as long as he comes out of this race OK.
"He jumped very well and he always travels well. I can't see any negatives."

Eight of the 14 jockeys in Baggy Hillis Memorial Steeplechase at Te Rapa failed to finish amid chaotic scenes.
It was bedlam over the fences at Te Rapa, Waikato's premier racecourse.
In the last day of the jumps racing season on Sunday, the Baggy Hillis Memorial Steeplechase turned out daggy - and not for the faint-hearted.
Fourteen horses faced the starter for the 4000m event with 15 fences to jump, but just six completed the course after a chapter of accidents, and one of those was more than 100 metres behind the others.
Veteran commentator George Simon reckoned Baggy Hillis, a character of New Zealand jumps racing who died three months ago, would be laughing in his beer at what unfolded.
The chaos began at the first jump, where favourite Noah Jon crashed and Hold The Dream followed him out.
Another popular fancy with the punters, Hemingway, crashed at the next fence, and Just Gorgeous, who jumped it poorly, was pulled out of the race.
''They're dropping like flies for you Baggy,'' Simon exclaimed.
Straight Furrow joined the action when he ran off the proper route after rider Reece Cole lost his stirrups and control of the horse.

Arizona Diamondbacks' Mark Trumbo and Giants' catcher Andrew Susac watch a high foul ball, as the DBacks play the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field in Phoenix, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014. Trumbo struck out four times as the Giants defeated the D'Backs 4-2.(Photo: Charlie Leight/The Republic)
In some ways, there is not much different about this season for Mark Trumbo. Compared to his career averages, he is hitting about the same number of ground balls, fly balls and line drives. He is walking and striking out at normal rates.
By those measures, he has been the player he always was, despite how meager his raw production numbers have looked. There is, however, one statistic that had fallen off from previous years, one that might be starting to correct itself at the end of an otherwise disappointing season.
More of Trumbo's fly balls are finding their way over the outfield fences, evidenced by his second two-homer game in the past week on Saturday night in the Diamondbacks' 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Chase Field.
MORE: Trumbo powers D-Backs to win over Cardinals
Over the previous three years, Trumbo's percentage of fly balls that turned into home runs hovered close to 20 percent, according to Fan Graphs. This year, it was down to 12.5 percent entering Saturday.
It's hard to believe the drop has anything to do with a decline in Trumbo's power. He is only 28 and still capable of launching balls to the farthest reaches of any stadium. The stat could just be a bit of bad luck combined with an injury-shortened season in which he has run out of time for the numbers to correct themselves.
Trumbo launched a solo homer in the first inning, the second of back-to-back shots by the Diamondbacks. With the game tied at 2, he drilled a go-ahead three-run home run to help delay a champagne celebration by the playoff-bound Cardinals in the visitors' clubhouse.
The blasts give him six home runs in his past 10 games. Known for his power, hHis slugging percentage is still some 50 points below his career average entering the year, but he has recently resembled the player the Diamondbacks hoped they were acquiring when they landed him in a three-way deal that included the Los Angeles Angels.
"Trumbo, I know, has not maybe had the year (he's wanted)," interim manager Alan Trammell said. "He's missed a lot of time. But you see the signs of why we made the trade."

Weeks after the White House was warned that a plan to vastly expand a maritime preserve and no-fishing zone in U.S.-controlled Pacific waters would harm the American fishing industry and geopolitically advantage China, the Obama administration has gone ahead anywaywith some concessions to make the environmental medicine, administered by presidential fiat, go down more smoothly.
The concessions did nothing, however, to assuage congressional Republicans led by Rep.Doc Hastings of Washington state, chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, who accused the administration of taking secret, unilateral action to expand the preserve. He warned that the economic consequences of this decision will be grave, further eroding the U.S. seafood industry and harming the well-being of the U.S. territories.
The decree that President Obama signed on Thursday boosted the size of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, a 77,000-square-mile preserve south and west of Hawaii, to some 490,000 square miles of protected area around a speckling of U.S.-controlled islandsan area that Secretary of State John Kerry, who hailed the move, declared to be twice the size of Texas.
(Actually, its slightly less: Texas is 268,820 square miles in area.)
The decree essentially bans all commercial fishing and deep-sea mining (which doesnt exist yet in any case) in the huge tract in perpetuity, though the announcement said there would be some exceptions for recreational and traditional fishing that is consistent with the conservation goals of the Monument.
That was significantly less than the roughly 780,000 square mile area initially proposed by the administration and its environment and energy czar, John Podesta, for the expanded preservea straightforward extension of a fishing ban to the full extent of the 200-mile, U.S. controlled exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around the islands.
The scaled back area to some extent mollified fishermen and fisheries experts who operate as part of the U.S. governments own management apparatus in that region, and who were deeply unhappy at the original proposal.
A delegation representing the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council visited Podesta and other administration officials in Washington earlier in September to argue that the proposed expansion, urged on by environmental organizations including the Pew Foundation, was a bad idea.
It would, they said, hurt a $100 million a year fishing industry based in Hawaii and give China, which is rapidly expanding its deep-sea fishing fleet, new and unfair opportunities to poach where law-abiding American boats would no longer travel.
The administration evidently listenedin part, perhaps, because the local elected officials in the affected area including Hawaii skew decidedly Democratic and this is a mid-term election year. According to an insider familiar with the process, the wheeling and dealing between the administration, environmental interest groups and fishing and political interests went on into Wednesday, the same day the expansion was announced.
