Fence removal, modification aiding Yellowstone wildlife - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fences are meant to keep animals in or out, not to let them through.

But a unique partnership has been forged specifically to help pronghorns crawl under fences outside Yellowstone National Parks North Entrance along their migration route to the Paradise Valley, a historic winter range.

Since 2010 the National Parks Conservation Association has received funding from Nature Valley to remove or alter about 18 miles of fence. The group has partnered with students, the Bureau of Land Management, Yellowstone Park, the Forest Service and the Fish, Wildlife and Parks area biologist to complete the work.

We try to be strategic with the fences we remove or modify, said Stephanie Adams, program coordinator in the NPCAs Bozeman office.

The NPCA is doing similar work in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming to help pronghorns that migrate from the park up to 170 miles south to the Upper Green River Basin one of the longest animal migrations in North America.

    Remove or modify

Early on, NPCA and its volunteers removed old fencing no longer needed on Gallatin National Forest lands, Adams said. Last Friday the workers finished rebuilding a fence around the BLMs 130-acre Carbella fishing access site along the Yellowstone River.

After taking out the old fence, a new enclosure around the site was built with smooth wire 18 inches above the ground on the bottom. Thats important since pronghorns typically wont jump a fence, preferring to crawl under. The top wire of the fence was also set lower than usual to allow other wildlife like elk and deer to more easily jump over.

Its a great partnership that NPCA formed, said John Sandford, a BLM natural resource specialist who took part in the work on Friday and last year. Theyve gotten a lot of stuff done with volunteer labor and even supplied the material.

    Moving on

Man with gun flees Reading police, hops fences while carrying toddler - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    READING, Pa. -

A Reading man is behind bars on numerous charges, despite his best efforts to outrun police, all while carrying a gun and a small child.

The series of events that led up to the foot chase began Wednesday morning with the suspect, Keith Johnson, and a woman fighting over feeding their children inside an apartment in the 200 block of West Windsor Street, police said.

The woman told police that Johnson punched her in the face and threw her around the apartment before he grabbed some belongings and left with his three-year-old son, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Officers responding to the couple's dispute spotted Johnson dropping some belongings as he fled with the child in the 200 block of Jameson Place. They gave chase, with Johnson putting the child over fences as he continued his getaway, police said.

Johnson eventually put the boy down and continued to flee before being apprehended by pursuing officers in the 300 block of West Windsor, according to court documents.

Police then checked the items they said Johnson discarded during the chase and found a .40 caliber revolver tucked inside a sneaker, ammunition, 25 plastic bags of crack cocaine, two plastic bags of marijuana and five tablets of oxycodone, according to court documents. Police said Johnson was also carrying $481 in cash.

Johnson, 24, was charged with simple assault, harassment, firearms not to be carried without a license, manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, and recklessly endangering another person. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $25,000 bail.

Johnson's son suffered a cut on one of his feet from being put over the fences during his father's attempt to flee from police, according to court documents.

    Black Thunder:

Prolific winner as a novice last year, and brought up the hat-trick with a brave win over Shotgun Paddy at Lingfield. That looks like good form, with the second going on to win the Classic Chase at Warwick. However, things have not gone to plan for Black Thunder since, as he was beaten at odds-on next time, and followed that run with a crunching fall in the RSA at Cheltenham. A clear round will be the order of the day here, while any further rain that hits the track could also be in this stout stayers favour. Hell win more races in time, but likely to find this classy little heat too tough on his return.

    Taquin De Seuil:

Cheltenham Festival win brought his debut campaign over fences to a satisfying conclusion. Kept busy last season, his record of four wins from six starts is not to be sniffed at, and while he didnt always look the most natural jumper of his fences, he showed the benefit of getting in plenty of chasing experience with his brave Cheltenham win. He always looked like getting on top that day, and had Double Ross and Wonderful Charm behind him. If ready to roll, he really should confirm the form with that pair, but this is only the starting point of a big season for him, and he might just be vulnerable to one better suited by the conditions of this race.

    Wonderful Charm:

Strong-travelling sort who came unstuck at the major Festivals in the spring. He had looked a novice of huge potential when winning a Grade Two at Newbury, and his subsequent second at Cheltenham, when trying to concede Oscar Whisky 6lb, is arguably better form still. His slightly-laboured fifth at Cheltenham, and third afterwards at Aintree, probably isnt a fair reflection of what he can do, and he has certainly run well fresh in the past. Nevertheless, he had Taquin De Seuil some nine lengths in front of him at Prestbury Park, and while he might be closer here, its hard to see him reversing that form.

    Double Ross:

Finished in the first three in all but one of his eight starts last season, and that sole failure to make the frame came in the 30-runner Topham. Still, he didnt disgrace himself in open company there, and he certainly earned his stripes in that sphere with wins in a brace of valuable Cheltenham handicaps. Returned to novice company, and that venue, he ran a blinder to finish a two length-third to Taquin De Seuil in the JLT. He gets 4lb from that rival here, but the winner was value for more than the official winning margin that day, and trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies expects him to come on for the run.
