How big a deal is MotoGP in Asia, and especially in Malaysia? There were officially 81,896 spectators at the Sepang International Circuit on Sunday for the races. That is a lot. To put it in perspective, it is the seventh highest attendance of the year, more than either of the US rounds of MotoGP, more than Silverstone, more than either of the Italian rounds.
There were 4,400 more spectators at Sepang than at Mugello. That is quite a turnaround: in 2000, the second year MotoGP was held at the circuit, only 32,375 people attended the race, spread over all three days. The three-day total is now close to 131,000.
It is testament to both the growing wealth of the region and the growing popularity of the sport. In the podium press conference, Valentino Rossi reflected on the change. For a long period, we have no people on Sunday, he said. Little by little attendance had grown, until now, it is a race with an atmosphere all of its own.
Now it is full, the atmosphere on the main straight is like Barcelona or Mugello. The guys are crazy for MotoGP. It was a great victory for the sport, he said. Given that those 82,000 people are mostly sitting outside, in tropical temperatures of 36C and humidity of over 50%, those guys (and gals) must indeed be crazy for MotoGP.
Their efforts were amply rewarded on Sunday, with three superb races. They saw records equaled in MotoGP, a richly-deserved title tied up in Moto2, and an exhilarating and incident-packed battle in Moto3, which sets up a grand finale for the Moto3 title at Valencia. Reason enough to come back again in force in 2015, with the added benefit of seeing the circuit fielding its own team in Moto3 next year.

CHURCH HILL Laurel Run Park gives hikers access to some challenging wilderness trails, but the road leading into the park has become almost as rugged as the trails and an adventure to traverse in itself.
That's a problem Hawkins County leaders would like to deal with sooner rather than later because the worse the road conditions become, the more expensive the road will be to repair.
On Tuesday the Hawkins County Commission's Parks Committee voted unanimously to ask the Budget Committee if it would consider using reserves from the county general fund to pave the park's internal roadway.
Parks Committee members Joe McLain and Glenda Davis both sit on the Budget Committee. They agreed to raise the issue at the next Budget Committee meeting, scheduled for Nov. 17.
The area proposed for paving is from the park entrance gate to the area near the public restrooms, which is basically the same roadway inside the park that's currently paved, and doesn't include gravel parking areas.
Although the park is county owned, the roadway inside the gate isn't a county road. Legally it's treated like a private driveway. That means the road isn't maintained by the county highway department as part of the county road system.
W.L. Construction is the Hawkins County Highway Department's low bidder for contracted paving projects.
Hawkins County facilities manager Alana Roberts told the committee Tuesday she asked highway superintendent Lowell Bean to obtain an estimate from W.L. Construction for paving the park's internal road. The estimate came back at $55,900 for 2-inch-thick pavement and $41,925 for 1.5 inches thick.

Police warn of unlicensed repairmen -

Authorities are warning of unlicensed repairmen coming into the city after they say an Orangeburg resident was taken in a driveway scam.
Police on patrol Wednesday noticed a pair of workers at a Perryclear Road residence doing what looked like paint work to the driveway. Officers remembered workers were at the same residence last week, the report says.
Officers asked the two North Augusta men what they were doing. The men said they were repairing the seniors driveway. They admitted they had been out the previous week to do the same job. When officers asked for their business license, they had none.
The men said they charged $120 to seal the driveway each time. The homeowner couldnt remember how much they charged, the report states. They went on to say they were looking for paving work, but officers noted their equipment was a sprayer and a five gallon bucket of metal roof sealant.
The men were cited for having no business license. When they were found to have no drivers license, their 2013 Dodge truck was towed. They were also placed on no trespassing notice.
Theyve been in Orangeburg before and police say they may be back again.
Orangeburg Department of Public Safety Capt. Ed Conner said the majority of genuine repair service businesses will not go door to door. But should anyone have such a visit, there are precautions that can be taken.
As a resident, they have the right to ask for their business permit and solicitation permit, Conner said. Any legitimate business will have both of these.
To operate in the city of Orangeburg, a business permit is required. To go door to door, a solicitation permit is required.
Authorities say the majority of the traveling scammers use fake repair services such as roof repair with shoddy or even no materials used, thinned-down paint and driveway scams.

BOONTON -Boonton Avenue will be closed in both directions from Main Street to at least Wootton Street from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday, Oct. 21 to about Friday, Oct. 24, as the road is being milled and paved.
At times, the entire length of Boonton Avenue to Sheep Hill Road will be closed.
The Town of Boonton Police recommend that motoristsplan on using an alternate route if possible, such as Route 287.
When Boonton Avenue is completely closed at Sheep Hill Road, southbound through traffic will be detoured from Boonton Avenue in Montville, making a left onto Taylortown Road, and then a right onto Route 202 to continue straight until Main Street in Boonton. Northbound traffic from Main Street will be detoured to Route 202 (Myrtle Ave), making a left on Taylortown and a right onto Boonton Avenue.
To accommodate this construction, emergency parking regulations will also be in effect.
Parking will be prohibited on Boonton Avenue from Main Street to Sheep Hill Road from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of the construction. Additionally, the Boonton Avenue parking lot near the intersection of Main Street will be subject to closure from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 21 and Oct. 23.
Vehicles must be removed from the parking lot prior to 6 a.m., or they may have to remain parked until roadway construction has ceased in the area.
Residents who park in a private driveway and will need to get out during the days of construction should make alternate arrangements, such as parking on an adjoining or parallel street, as there may be delays in accessing driveways depending on the roadwork being performed at the time.
There will be police personnel on scene during the project, and if a motorist faces difficulty in accessing a particular residence or location, or has any questions about access, they should speak to a police officer first, especially before proceeding around any barricades or cones.

The last two winters have taken a toll on Nutley streets. This has not gone unnoticed by the Nutley Public Works Department, as can be demonstrated by the numerous street closings due to ongoing paving projects.
Nutley Public Works Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli indicates that the scheduled street reconstructions are approximately halfway completed.
"Historically, the township appropriated $250,000 to $300,000 in our capital improvement budget to re-construct and re-surface our roadways. Obviously, that same amount of money does not pave as many roads as it did 15 to 20 years ago. For that reason and the past couple of terrible winters, the Nutley Board of Commissioners increased the amount to restore our roadways to close to $1 million," said Scarpelli. "I thank our residents for their patience as we look to finish the remainder of our planned projects."
The streets currently being re-paved are: Coeyman Avenue (between Bloomfield and Prospect), Elm Street, Newark Avenue, Mt. Vernon Street (between Bloomfield and Corsay, along with Wayside and Blum Lanes), Linn Road, Highfield Avenue (between Passaic and Whitford), Satterthwaite Avenue (from Passaic through North Road), and the short dead end of Lakeside Drive.
Also included are some intersections that are in bad shape with multiple potholes and old pothole repairs. They include Prospect and High, Prospect and Mountainview, Prospect and Chase, Ridge and Ohlson, Ridge and Glenview, Glenview and Watchung.
"We have also invested in equipment and staff that allows us to also do some in-house skim coat repair to some roads that are in between needing a complete re-construction and beyond a simple filling of potholes," said Scarpelli. "Thus far we have completed areas of Chestnut Street, Brookfield Avenue, Coeyman Avenue, Raymond Avenue, Grant Avenue, Crestwood Avenue, Van Winkle Avenue, Baltimore Street, Garden Place and Beech Street."
Besides the capital improvement budget, the township utilizes New Jersey Department of Transportation grants and Community Development Block Grants for repaving projects. The DOT grants are for major arteries. During the past several years, the entire lengths of Bloomfield and Passaic avenues were reconstructed with these monies. This summer Park Avenue was completed from Washington to Union Avenue with the grant.
The CDBG money is a federal program administered by the County of Essex. It is reserved for road reconstruction in specific US Census Blocks. The paving of Hancox and Conover Avenues are currently awaiting approval by the county.
"As part of our ADA requirement whenever we reconstruct a roadway we must upgrade to the current standard for handicap ramps at the crosswalks. We have also made a conscious decision to repair specific curbs, driveway aprons, and sidewalks to increase the longevity of the road re-paving," said Scarpelli. "We have also initiated a crack sealing program this year. Cracks will be filled in some of our recently paved roads in order to preserve and add life to the roadway."
The reconstruction projects should be completed by late fall. The Engineering Department has already started preparing for next years projects. Some of the criteria used to evaluate the roads to be considered for paving are the general condition of the road, number of roadway openings (PSEG/water/sewer repairs), and condition of the sub base of the roadway, alligator cracking, condition and height of curbs, the amount of traffic (i.e., main street versus dead end), drainage, geographic location (to spread out the repairs throughout the town), and the preliminary cost estimate of the re-construction.

October is a great time of year to have work done on your driveway.
Joan Krotenberg knows that, and a year ago this month, she hired North Jersey Paving and Construction to do work at her Livingston home. She ended up with an ill-fixed driveway that led to finger-pointing and a multi-state family squabble that ended up in divorce court.
Her driveway remains in limbo.
"They laid asphalt on my existing driveway. The owner, James Gorman, came to see my driveway shortly thereafter, agreed that there were problems and offered to seal coat the following year, which would be now," Krotenberg said. "He does not answer my phone calls. He completely ignores me."
She said she paid $2,500 for the job, but now the driveway needs to be ripped up and redone, at an estimated cost of $4,500.
Krotenberg filed a complaint with the Division of Consumer Affairs in August, and the case went to a mediator.
The mediator reached out to Gorman, who on Sept. 2 promised he would stop by Krotenberg's home "to see what he could do," email correspondence showed.
But by Sept. 8, Gorman didn't call or stop by, Krotenberg said.
The following day, the mediator said he'd call Gorman to give him another chance.
Then the mediator learned something new. Gorman had a partner named William Mesker, who recently bought Gorman out of the business, Mesker said, because of other customer complaints.
