WATCH:An Alberta woman is being honoured with a humanitarian award for paving the way for transgender people. Su-Ling Goh has her story.
EDMONTON Marni Panas is easy to like. Shes friendly and chatty and funny. On Wednesday, International Human Rights Day, shes receiving an award for paving the way for transgender people.
Marni is being honoured witha humanitarian award from Edmontons John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, where she will make a speech about her life. Shell be charming and completely win over the crowd.
But Marni wasnt always so confident and outgoing.
Marni was designated male at birth, and named Marcel. In small-town Alberta, Marcel didnt fit in. He often chose girl toys and was told he was too emotional. The other kids ignored, even rejected, him.
I liked to play with the girls, and I liked what the girls had to share with me, but of course the girls didnt want to play with the boys, so I was quite alone, Marnirecalls.
Then in 1996, Marcel met the love of his life, a woman named Laurina.
She was just raised in an environment that you dont judge, that you accept all people for all they are.
I think thats why maybe I was attracted to Laurina in the first place.
Marcel told Laurina about his struggle with gender identity. The couple married and had a son, Alex. Over the years, Laurina not only accepted, but encouraged her husbands love of performing as drag queen Marni Gras.

I just read the letter to editor by Armando Baezs re Paving over Paradise. Can you tell he is on Village Lagunas board? It is a good story line and rally point for its members. Laguna is a tourist town, that means many people come here toenjoy our ambiance, including our view, which is still on their agenda to block as we saw this past year.
Where does Baez think people who work at restaurants, hotels, shops, provide services to homeowners, as well as those that support law firms, doctors office, etc. are going to park? Not everyone who works here lives here, can take a bus, nor is our local bus service 24/7 effective much less user friendly.Where will the visitors park when they want to enjoyArt Walk, yearly plein air event, and summer longart festivals? They cant park in residential area.
Eliminating parking is going on now.So far two Village Laguna members have removed two legal parking spaces under the guise that the street was not wide enough, or a woman could not pull into her driveway (for 18 years she has). The truth the owner did not want anyone parking in front of his home.Only six people signed for no parking, 18 said yes for parking.
That is typical of the lopsided representation of general population versus Village Laguna.Their members sit on all of the volunteer committees and often lead the committees and bully the rest of the members if they have a different point of view.Their influence in city hall is long standing, starting with Ann Christoph, then Verna Rollinger, and now Martha Anderson.Because they are a mutual benefit corporation, they get their way to help their members. Lets all join Village Laguna and see what happens.
Sounds like Baez is getting ready to run for office next election. Please dont. Find a hobby, help the homeless, do something that would really help this city. Eliminating parking is not the solution. Think outside of the box.

New Bern aldermen approved a revenue bond order last week to pay for upgrades at the citys Kale Road building, where the utilities department is moving, and for the second phase of a planned citywide new utilities metering system.
Keith Fiaschetti, New Bern finance director, said the board adopted a revenue bond order not to exceed $3.9 million. But the bond funding will actually be $3,830,000 with a 10-year term at an interest rate of 2.15 percent for Phase II of the advanced metering infrastructure system, or AMI, and the Kale Road project, he said.
An amendment aldermen approved for the budget of the two projects also will transfer $265,100 to the AMI project and $40,900 to the Kale Road project from the water capital reserve fund to reduce the bond amount. With the additional funds from the water reserves, the board approved a total of $4,136,000 for both projects.
Fiaschetti said $2.5 million of the funding will go toward the AMI project and $1,636,000 toward the Kale Road building.
Aldermen accepted a low bid on Nov. 12 of $1,092,346.85 from Brydge and Lee Inc. of New Bern to upgrade the Kale Road building, which will be the headquarters for the citys public utilities operations. The upgrades are phase two of the project. Moving the administrative operation, about 20 administrative and staff personnel, from the utilities department at 303 First St. to 210 Kale Road at the end of August was the first phase of the project.
Jordan Hughes, city engineer, said the difference between the $1.092 million low bid and the total cost of $1.636 million (and additional $543,653.15) was used for work on the administration building, the installation of an auxiliary generator, moving and installing IT equipment, and minor modifications to the warehouse.
The second phase involves moving all the electric maintenance and operations distribution equipment and the warehouse operations at 205 First St. into the Kale Road warehouse building. That requires significant upgrades to store equipment and trucks and for preparation of the site.
Upgrades at the Kale Road site include grading, construction of equipment storage shelters behind the facility, stormwater pond modifications, and parking lot and driveway paving.
Hughes said in an earlier interview that work on the Kale Building should be completed sometime in May or June.
