Dozens of drivers on Sunday afternoon drove nearly a mile past "road closed" and "local traffic only" signs on Glensford Drive to see for themselves: The long-awaited connection to Hope Mills Road at Raeford Road remains long-awaited.
They may be distressed to learn that the parkway's repeatedly delayed opening date, most recently postponed to January, has been postponed further by a failing sewer line. Engineers hope the project will be wrapped up by early spring, said Ginny Inman, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.
"Once they started working on the construction, they ran into a sewer line issue," Inman said. "They did not want to put a new road on something that would have to be torn up."
The delay suits Glensford Drive resident Daniel Bay.
"The longer it's postponed, the better, because as soon as they open this thing up, it's going to be Skibo," Bay said. Skibo Road is one of the busiest, heaviest-traveled streets in Fayetteville.
Once Glensford opens, Fayetteville will have a major new artery to funnel traffic from Raeford Road and the Hope Mills area to the city's commercial heart at Cross Creek Mall. The trip will be will be shortened by more than a mile and drivers will be able to avoid the intersection of Skibo and Raeford roads, the city's busiest intersection.
Bay bought his house 11 years ago and was unhappy to learn not long afterward that Glensford, then a two-lane residential street, was slated to become a four-lane divided parkway.
Now Bay and his wife have three children, ages 7 to 11. He worries about them with the heavy traffic he expects to see speeding past his front yard. And the yard is smaller than it used to be because of the widening and partly covered with straw where the road construction workers have reseeded it.
The street remains a mess of straw-covered lawns, muddy areas and construction equipment. When it's finished and cleaned up, Bay said, he plans to move away and rent out his home. He's hopeful that eventually the street will convert to commercial use so he can sell it for top-dollar.
One of his neighbors, Sharon Gurganus Avery, has concerns about how well her elderly mother, Josephine Gurganus, will handle backing into traffic out of her driveway once the connection opens.

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP >> The board of supervisors approved its final $12.34-million general fund operating budget for the fiscal year beginning Jan. 1.
The package calls for holding the line on taxes even though the loss of revenue from the planned closing of the Lockheed Martin facility will hit the township the hardest in the coming year.
On Dec. 17, the supervisors voted 3-2 along party lines, with Republicans Mike Gallagher, Ryan Gallagher and Kyle Davis voting in favor of the budget and Democrats Phil Calabro and Jennifer Dix casting dissenting votes.
Unlike many other neighboring municipalities, Newtown does not have a traditional real estate property tax.
However, there is a 2.5 mill tax imposed on property owners which is dedicated to the townships fire protection fund and in paying off debt service on borrowed money.
For 2015, that millage rate will remain unchanged.
Were doing everything to keep the millage rate the same, said township manager Kurt Ferguson, who labeled the budget conservative.
Most of the township's revenues are derived from the one-percent Earned Income Tax (EIT), which is expected to account for almost 60 percent of all general fund revenues in 2015.
However the planned Lockheed Martin closing is expected to adversely affect the townships revenue stream.

Now more than 32ft wide and 16ft deep, the gaping cavern is just 2ft from the children's climbing frame and only six feet from the nearest wall of the house.
The crater has grown so big that it has taken over much of the garden and driveway - forcing the family to gain access to their home via their neighbours garden.
And now Sarah Jenkins and her family face a nail-biting Christmas wondering if it will get even bigger and swallow their house in the Berkshire village of Upper Basildon, near Reading.
Mrs Jenkins said living with it is "absolutely dreadful."

It's taken out quite a bit of the driveway and garden and it's sitting underneath my children's climbing frame, so it's very serious. It's dangerous. Living with this is absolutely dreadful
Sarah Jenkins
She said: "This crater suddenly appeared in our garden. It's massive and it's getting bigger all the time.
"The only access to our property has been across our neighbour's garden.

Haskell Paving's flatbed trailer was loaded with Christmas trees ready to deliver to underprivileged families in Newark on the morning of Dec. 13. From left are Alex Gramling, Bob Bailey Jr., Bob "Boots" Bailey Sr., Jeff Bailey, and Eddie Hubschmitt.
Just after 8 a.m. on a chilly Dec. 13, the engine of Haskell Paving's flatbed trailer rumbled to life in the firm's driveway off Ringwood Avenue. Instead of carrying heavy equipment to a local construction job, however, it held scores of Christmas trees on their way to Newark, where they would be donated to underprivileged families through the work of a charity called Christmas Tree Santas.
While the truck warmed up, Haskell Paving's owner Bob "Boots" Bailey held court in a little office up the hill with his sons Jeff and Bob Bailey and their friends Eddie Hubschmitt and Alex Gramling. After pointing at Gramling and saying, "There's your Santa Claus," Boots Bailey told Suburban Trends that the idea to give away Christmas trees to those who might otherwise not be able to afford them came about "when the guys were sitting around playing poker one night."
Gramling and the younger Bob Bailey have been friends and business partners for many years. Along with Ted Justiss, the two friends started Christmas Tree Santas four years ago. Their mission is to spread holiday hope and joy by giving Christmas trees to families in need.
"We were already doing it in Atlanta and where I live in Massachusetts," Gramling said. "Then Hurricane Sandy hit the following year and we thought we should try to help people out in New Jersey after that."
Following a short search for a foundation to work with, they decided to partner with Merit Preparatory Charter School in Newark. This is their third year heading down to the Brick City, where they set up a little tree stand and hold a Christmas party for a few hours.
Representatives from Merit Prep do the work of finding appropriate tree recipients in the weeks preceding delivery.
"The families have all signed up in advance," Gramling said. "They love it. We get a lot of smiles from them."
Gramling said that 125 trees would be distributed in Newark, but that is only a small part of the Christmas Tree Santas' story.
