Orlando cancels demolition contract on Round Building - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Colosseum still stands in the heart of Rome, the survivor of multiple earthquakes through the centuries.

The Parthenon also survives, despite being nearly blown to smithereens by the Venetians during a siege of Athens in 1687.

And like those gems of world architecture, Orlando's Round Building is proving surprisingly difficult to destroy.

The formerly seven-story structure, which dates to the year 1963, has been undergoing a slow-motion destruction over the past several months, with contractor Crusader Demolition missing a series of deadlines.

The building's unlikely survival saga took its latest turn this week, when the city of Orlando finally canceled Crusader's contract.

City spokeswoman Cassandra Lafser said that no decision has been made on who will take over the contract. But that decision will be made by Capitol Indemnity Corporation, which insured the project, she said. The city will face no additional cost because of the change, Lafser said.

Before the $736,810 contract was signed back on Aug. 4, a competing firm pointed out that the Lakeland-based company was unqualified for the job. City officials defended the firm at the time, but that approach has ended.

In addition to terminating the contract, Chief Procurement Officer David Billingsley informed the company Wednesday that the city intends to bar Crusader from bidding on city jobs for the next five years.

Little remains of the former bank building but a soggy, round hole in the ground. But it wasn't supposed to be this way. The intention was to have the building site cleared well before the adjacent Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts opened in November.

The semi-demolished structure has been an eyesore ever since, greeting patrons on their way into the gleaming, $514 million arts center. In one episode along the way, video surfaced of a Crusader employee firing an automatic weapon in the building's basement.

Goodbye Jubilee Road toilets: demolition gets underway after long campaign to save them - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE demolition of public toilets close to a busy Poole shopping street has ended a lengthy campaign to retain them.

Residents, businesses and shoppers were desperate to keep the Jubilee Road loos, which Borough of Poole had earmarked for closure, however a 2,000 strong petition from the Ashley Road Traders Association failed to save them.

The block had been subject to vandalism and incidents of anti-social behaviour and was closed in February 2014. It would cost 15,000 to re-open with annual running costs of nearly 14,000, said the council.

However traders, who fear the effect on their businesses, sought to have them made a community asset while they investigated taking them over and running them. But the cost and legal responsibilities made this unfeasible.

I am sad that the council has put money to one side to demolish the building, said Mike Ockenden, chairman of Ashley Road Traders. That money could have been used to refurbish the building and re-open it.

He said the council had promised six community toilets for people to use at businesses along lengthy Ashley Road but there were only three. One was at a caf which closed mid-afternoon, another at a pub and the third at Waitrose.

Traders are saying shoppers are telling them they wont shop in the street because of the lack of toilets, he said. And finding the toilets closed some desperate people were finding secluded places nearby to relieve themselves, he added.

Cllr Phil Eades, who represents Branksome West, called it: A sad day for community facilities in Upper Parkstone.

He said: The council has pressed on with the demolition of these much-needed local facilities despite there not being an adequate alternative plan in place.

The council said it was working to increase the number of businesses taking part in the community toilet scheme.

Connellsville studying emergency demolition of WCVI building - March 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Connellsville city officials were working Thursday to figure out how to plan an emergency demolition of the former WCVI radio station building on East Crawford Avenue.

Connellsville Councilman Greg Ritch and Code Enforcement Officer Tom Currey were at city hall looking at what roadblocks might be in the way of a quick demolition.

Officials could not give a date on when demolition could begin because many issues have to be investigated.

Maybe within 30 days, sooner rather than later, Ritch said. It depends on how many roadblocks (will slow the process.)

The first thing we need to do is get an estimate on how much it will cost to demo the building, then we will know where we stand, Mayor Greg Lincoln said. Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for this demolition because the county sold it to a person who never had any intentions on doing anything with the building. We need help putting pressure on this negligent building owner to take responsibility for this messy situation.

Ritch said before demolition could begin the city would need permission from PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Fayette County.

We have to bring that building down sooner rather than later, Ritch said.

Ritch said city officials are going to talk to the Fayette County Commissioners and the Connellsville Redevelopment Authority to seek options to get the building demolished.

Fayette County Commissioner Al Ambrosini felt the building might still be structurally sound.

However, I certainly understand the concern for safety and the need to take the appropriate steps to keep people safe, said Ambrosini, adding it was an appropriate step for the city to determine the cost for the demolition of the building.
