HOT SPRINGS -- A bridge that has spanned a south Garland County creek for nearly a century has landed on a state list for demolition.
The 32-foot-long Sorrel Creek Bridge north of the Hot Spring County line on Arkansas 7 south is scheduled for demolition, said Robert Scoggin, historic resources coordinator of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department's Environmental Division.
A marketing letter dated March 20 is soliciting new owners as part of a federal law requiring historic bridges scheduled for demolition to be made available for donation to a "state, locality or private entity." The highway department sent the letter to the Garland County Historical Society, Arkansas State Parks, Garland County, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Scoggin said.
If a letter of interest isn't submitted within 45 days of the marketing letter's receipt, Scoggin said the bridge is scheduled for demolition.
The department determined the masonry-arch bridge built in the early 1920s was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, but its proximity to a sharp curve north of Kentucky Derby Drive and its narrow width put it on the department's replacement list.
"A lot of it has to do with the geometry of the approaches," Scoggin said. "There's a sharp curve coming into it, and it narrows as you go across the bridge. People end up wrecking into the end of the bridge."
Scoggin said highway department regulations prevent it from keeping bridges no longer in vehicular use. If an interest is expressed to assume responsibility for its historic preservation, the highway department will consider the feasibility of leaving it in place and building the new bridge adjacent to it.
"If someone else wants to take it over, we're more than willing to make that happen," he said. "Nine times out of 10 it's something we can do."
Scoggin said it could be converted into a pedestrian rest area with park benches and a plaque explaining its historical significance. Expenses associated with its preservation would be reimbursed up to 100 percent of the demolition costs as determined by the Federal Highway Administration.
Scoggin said the analysis committee determined the cost of relocating it was prohibitive, explaining that it's an option generally limited to metal-truss bridges.

MADEIRA BEACH --
A demolition crew began tearing through the roof of the old Madeira Beach city hall with a backhoe on Monday that officially ends 50 years of public use in the building that had become run down.
"The new city halls up, the old city halls coming down," said Mayor Travis Palladeno. "Its kind of a sad day because were saying goodbye to an old friend that has served us well over the last 50 years."
The old city hall first opened up for business in March of 1965 at 300 Municipal Dr. in Madeira Beach and city commissioner Patricia Shontz said she remembers the brand new building.
"I was here that day. What a wonderful, amazing day in Madeira Beach," Shontz said. "We at last had a city hall. It was fantastic."
Over the years the old city hall developed a number of problems that included frequent flooding and mold in the air conditioning ducts, according to city manager Shane Crawford.
"We had pests, we had rodents, we had several different kinds of mold. It was just that time," Crawford said. "The old city hall would flood all the time. In fact, my own office... would flood four or five times a year."
Crawford said it should take about two weeks to completely demolish the old city hall that sits in the shadow of the new $10 million city center that houses the new city hall, a fire station and recreation center. The land that the old city hall sits on will be turned into a parking lot for the city center. Construction on the fully glassed oval city commission chamber is still underway. Crawford said he expects the parking lot, landscaping and commission chamber to be complete in the next 60 days.
"Were all moved out and in our new facility," he said. "Hopefully, well be holding meetings in there in May."
Shontz said watching the old city hall get demolished was a little bittersweet but she really likes the new city hall.

The demolition of a guest house near the renowned Padagaya Kshetram in Pithapuram on Sunday evening ahead of the Godavari Pushkarams has sparked a controversy, with officials of the Endowments Department failing to cite the reasons behind the move.
The guest house was recently renovated by donors who spent nearly Rs. 30 lakh on it. As many as 19 air-conditioned rooms were built and facilities like television sets were provided. The total value of the building is said to be around Rs. 1 crore, and the temple has been earning Rs. 8 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh per annum towards room rentals. However, officials of the Endowments Department, accompanied by the local elected representatives and police, took up the demolition of the building on Sunday evening and finished the task by late in the night.
Based on oral instructions from higher-ups, we have demolished the building, as it is against the temples vaastu. Plans are afoot to construct similar building near the site using government funds and retain the names of the donors in the new building, D. Bhramaramba, Deputy Commissioner of Endowments, said. She maintained that the sudden demolition was owing to objection from some donors and added that construction works would commence in two months from now. The donors have no information about the demolition. Such acts not only hurt the sentiments of donors but also affect future donations, said Vadrevu Srinivasa Rao, president of Datta Sai Seva Samithi, the organisation involved in several development works at Padagaya Kshetram including the renovation of the guest house. If the construction is against vaastu, how could the temple architect accord permission for its construction? We wonder why they demolished the entire building, when there is no problem with the ground floor, he added.

Guest house brought down for vaastu reasons
The first of more than a dozen buildings on the site of the future IKEA store came crashing down in a matter of minutes Thursday morning, a milestone that comes more than a year after the project was approved.
Nineteen buildings are being torn down to make way for a new 456,000-square-foot store, which will be the Swedish retailer's largest in the United States when it opens in spring 2017. It will be roughly 6,000 square feet larger than the current record-holder in Schaumburg, Ill., which opened in 1998, said Joseph Roth, director of public affairs for the company.
Officials from IKEA all wearing yellow shirts and from the city most wearing business suits donned white hard hats and gathered on a patch of asphalt in the 800 block of South San Fernando Boulevard to witness the destruction of the steel warehouse building, previously used by Western Studio Services for prop storage and, long ago, home to Menasco Aerospace.
Some elected officials even participated in the demolition, which began around 10:30 a.m., with Burbank Mayor David Gordon behind the controls of a tracked excavator.
Mayor Gordon got to take the first bite of the apple, so to speak, Roth said, as Vice Mayor Bob Frutos took his turn behind the controls.
With a jaw-like bucket at the end of its jointed arm, the machine battered, chomped and dragged sheet metal walls, while nearby workers sprayed water on the structure to keep the dust and debris down. The morning's demolition was the first physical work on the project, Roth said, calling it real progress.
There's much work to do, but it took a lot of work to get here, he added.
The City Council approved the project last March, but in April the nonprofit Citizens Advocating Rational Development sued Burbank and IKEA, claiming the city had not prepared an adequate environmental-impact report for the massive expansion. The group agreed to dismiss its suit following a settlement in September.
While Councilman Jess Talamantes politely declined his turn at the controls of the excavator, he said he was amazed at how quickly the building came down.
They take so long to put up, and see how fast they come down unbelievable, Talamantes said after the walls caved and the roof sagged to the ground with a metallic crunch at around 10:50 a.m.
