Demolition begins at Seminole Mall - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SEMINOLE

Mall razes former theater; won't get county tax money

City officials and developers still have not reached an agreement about the redevelopment of Seminole Mall.

However, the first phase of the reconstruction is scheduled to begin April 6 with the demolition of the former movie theater on the northeast section of the property. In preparation of the demolition and in the interest of public safety, the city this week is closing a portion of 80th Avenue N and Liberty Lane to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Traffic will be rerouted through the mall parking lot. The roads are expected to remain closed for 30 days.

In a related item, Pinellas County Administrator Mark Woodard on Monday turned down a request from developers Primerica Group One to contribute tax money to the redevelopment of the mall.

In an email to Primerica president Richard Trzcinski, the administrator wrote, "Retail projects are not typically considered part of the county's economic development efforts. These projects only tend to serve customers who live within five miles or less of the mall. Therefore no new money is drawn into the local economy from outside."

Woodard also pointed out that retail jobs tend to have low wages and the county wants to encourage the creation of high-wage jobs "in order to maximize the return on investment to the taxpayers of Pinellas County."

    Mastry's now an octogenarian

Mastry's Bar is celebrating its 80th birthday this week. Originally called the Pink Elephant, the hometown haunt at 233 Central Ave. is thought to be the city's oldest downtown bar. It was one of Babe Ruth's favorite spots. Photos of him hang on the walls.

The store will operate under the name Kwik Star, which it uses for its stores in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The company also has Kwik Stars in surrounding cities, such as Camanche and Clinton, and Tobacco Outlet stores in Bettendorf and Davenport.

Kwik Trip also hasplans to open along 53rd Avenue in Bettendorf near the border with Davenport and at 1225 E. Kimberly Road, Davenport.

Kingdome debt finally paid off 15 years after demolition - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Updated MAR 26, 2015 7:15p ET

    By John Ferensen

It only took a scant 39 years and exactly 15 years after its demolition but the Kingdome, the hideous mound of concrete where CenturyLink Field stands today, has finally been paid off.

The Kingdome where the Seattle SuperSonics won an NBA title (technically, they clinched it on the road, but played all their home games there), and where the Seahawks and Mariners mostly stank opened for business in 1976, famously hosting a Led Zeppelin concert in its infancy. Attendees thought the roof would collapse. It didnt, and it would only take 18 more years to happen.

The ceiling wouldnt give out until July 1994, when falling tiles forced the Mariners onto the road the remainder of a strike-shortened season, while the Seahawks had to play an entire season at Husky Stadium across town. The Kingdome is also whereBo Jackson nearly ran to Tacoma,The Doublehappened, where Michael Jordan entertained 38,067 people, and whereTom Chambers won the 1987 NBA All-Star Game MVPplaying in front of a home crowd.

The Kingdome was rendered obsolete by the late 1990s, and was replaced by two sports palaces: Safeco Field and the aforementioned CenturyLink Field. To put the Kingdomes terrible payment plan in perspective (the falling ceiling tiles only added to the cost), Safeco (opened in 1999)was paid off in 2011, while The Clink (opened in 2002) is on schedule to be paid off by 2021.

    R.I.P. Kingdome. Finally.
