Vendée Globe turns demolition derby as fifth starter retires - November 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The demolition derby aspect of the Vende Globe round the world race continued to dominate coverage on Sunday as the fifth of the 20 starters limped off the racecourse and a sixth sought to fix a problem which could also force him to retire.

The 24,400-mile race is only a week old as Jrmie Beyou heads for the Cape Verde Islands to fix what sounds like a major hydraulics problem controlling the keel of his Open 60 Maitre Coq.

It will not be easy, his boat is also taking water, and the race rules forbid any outside assistance. At the same time Polands Zbigniew Gutkowski was seeking shelter to free a sail wrapped around the top of the mast of Energa.

More difficult may be the problem of fixing the cause. His self-steering mechanism is faulty and he may not wish to take on the Southern Ocean, though he is a long way from taking that decision without a fully functional autopilot. Going into the Southern Ocean without an autopilot is a completely stupid idea, said Gutkowski.

Beyou has not given up hope and if he can centre and securely fix the keel and theres a tiny little chance to go on, well stay in the race.

Explaining why the IMOCA 60-foot boats used in the race are so much more prone to keel and keel hydraulics problems than the Volvo Open 70s, British designer Merfyn Owen explained that the Open 60 keels were all designed individually for each boat whereas there has been a much tougher design rule for the Volvo boats and next time round starting 2014 they will all be exactly the same. The Volvo boats have much more of a belt and braces approach, he said.

Less easy to understand is the amount of time being taken by the jury which deliberates on any rule infringements in the VG. Monday sees seven days since two protests against a total of nine boats for infringing traffic separation lanes around Cape Finisterre, including one against Britains Mike Golding.

Nor has there been any clear explanation about the reason for such a lengthy delay either from the jury, headed by Frances Bernard Bonneau, or the race committee, headed by Denis Horeau and which itself submitted a protest against eight competitors.

Armel l Cleach continues to lead the remaining 14, plus two wounded, as the fleet approaches the Doldrums.Second is the early leader, Franois Gabart. Britains Alex Thomson is sixth and Mike Golding ninth.

Madrasah Demolition: Kedah MB Forced to Attend Committal Proceedings Filed Against Him - November 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Filepic Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak. Pix: mynewshubALOR STAR: Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak was today forced to attend a committal proceedings filed against him over the proposed demolition of Madrasah Salihiah Kanchut.

He was accompanied by his private secretary Helmi Yahya, Wisma Darulaman chief administrative assistance (Finance) Ahmad Sazali Md Noor and his personal bodyguard.

Azizan, who appeared visibly weak upon arrival, appeared before Judicial Commissioner See Mee Chin in the courts chamber.

Also appearing before See was the Kota Star district land administrator Zaid Ahmad, who is also named as a defendant in the suit filed by the Save Madrasah Salihiah action committee.

They were represented by lawyers from the State Legal Advisors office Fariza Ahmad and Masri Azizan while Counsel Jesvinder Jit Singh appeared on behalf of the committee.

On Oct 3, the committee had filed an ex-parte application for a committal proceeding against Azizan and Zaid.

They alleged the defendants had committed contempt of court over the transfer of a title for a plot of land where the madrasah was built when the injunction application to stop the proposed demolition, to make way for the RM500 million Aman Central shopping-cum-residential project, was being carried out.

They claimed the land was transferred to a subsidiary of Penang-based Belleview Group, the contractor of the multimillion-ringgit project.

Azizan, when met by reporters after about an hour inside the court's chamber, said there was nothing unusual about him attending the proceedings.

This is normal. Even Mahathir (former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) and Hosni Mubarak (former Egyptian president) had attended court hearing before," he said.

Removal of asbestos at North Side church preceding demolition - November 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Asbestos is being removed from the former St. Nicholas Church in preparation for demolition of the historic Troy Hill landmark, which representatives of the city, the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation met recently to plan.

Diocese spokesman the Rev. Ronald Lengwin said the demolition has not been scheduled because it is not known how long asbestos removal will take: "It's not going to happen for a while."

When the church does come down, lane closures may result because traffic on Route 28 is just a sidewalk away from the towering brick structure. PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said the demolition is unlikely to conflict with the state's highway construction, but the city will be responsible for coordinating traffic flow past the church during the tear-down.

The city granted the church historic status in 2001. Three years later, the parish in Millvale consolidated the Troy Hill congregation and began fighting efforts to save the old structure. PennDOT shifted its expansion of Route 28 to go around the church in 2008. At that point, the Preserve Croatian Heritage Foundation had raised $60,000 to begin plans for the building's reuse as a museum.

The foundation also paid to secure the building and make minor repairs.

For years, preservationists went back and forth with the parish over the church's future. Parish representatives argued that the vacant church was draining it of money that it needed for upkeep of the Millvale church and that it was a safety hazard.

The preservation group contracted its own study that determined it to be structurally sound and a feasibility study that indicated the building could viably be used as an immigrant museum.

After several suitors bowed out of deals to buy the church, the Northside Leadership Conference, in support of the preservation group, offered $1 for it, pending a survey to determine whether the hillside was stable.

Instead, the diocese sought a hardship provision in the city's historic code that allows for demolition. The Historic Review Commission denied the request, in part considering they had an offer that would relieve them of further expense, but they won in Common Pleas Court last summer.

Judge Robert Colville ruled that $1 is not a reasonable return. He cited previous case law in describing the church's historic designation in 2001 as, in effect, "a taking" that left the church hobbled by historic code demands.

Mandaue starts Orel demolition - November 20, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Clearing of waterways to continue till Dec. 7 in barangay Maguikay, Tabok and Paknaan Cebu Daily News

A government demolition crew started taking down 15 of 130 houses in barangay Banilad, Mandaue City despite verbal protests of residents who pleaded to spare their houses because Christmas was near.

Some families chose to dismantle their own houses to avoid trouble.

Demolition work will resume in sitio Orel at 8 a.m. today as part of the citys effort to clear danger zones like creeks and easement zones of informal settlers.

Tonypet Juanico, housing and home site regulation officer, said Dec. 7 is the target date to clear the site and other inhabited areas in barangays Maguikay and Tabok (74 houses) and Paknaan (60 houses).

As early as 6 a.m., residents of houses built along a three-meter easement and danger zone of a waterway in sitio Orel gathered near the gates of San Miguel Corporation and blocked the entry of vehicles, including the food conglomerates delivery trucks.

The standoff lasted throughout the morning as a representative of the affected residents, Roberto Lebata, tried to negotiate a stay of the demolition with authorities.

He spoke with Supt. Crisaleo Tolentino, deputy police director and Cynthia Suico, community affairs officer of the Housing and Urban Development Office (HUDO).

The demolition proceeded at around 2 p.m.

Representatives of the Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor (PCUP) and the Commission for Human Rights (CHR), were present to ensure that the operation was carried out in a humane manner.
