Fears that radioactive dust could shower the crowds at Yonge-Dundas Square have prompted Canadas nuclear watchdog to stop the scheduled demolition of a contaminated building.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission ordered HNR Properties to cease all demolition activities at 258 Victoria St., which was once a radium dial painting factory, because the residual radioactive contamination in the building would be released if the building is torn down.
Since demolition work is imminent, the order was deemed necessary to ensure the health and safety of workers and the public and protections of the environment, inspector Dana Pandolfi wrote in a letter to the developer last week.
A 39-storey mixed residential-commercial development, which would preserve the historical buildings facing Dundas Square and add a new tower behind them, has been in the works for at least five years.
The development was recommended for approval in a 2009 city staff report, as it met the official plan for intensification and reflects the citys design principles.
There was no mention of radioactive material in the citys report. The city issued a demolition permit in August 2012 and can revoke the permit if work hasnt started in six months.
It is unclear exactly when the demolition was scheduled to start.
Mike Grey, a health physicist who specializes in radioactive material, was brought in by HNR Properties to deal with the contamination. He says that they had plans to remove the contamination before the order was issued, but that work hasnt been done yet.
The amount of contamination is quite limited, he said.
The Victoria St. building has been identified as the site of a plant where radium dial painting or processing occurred. Radium was once used on watch faces to make them glow in the dark. The practice was stopped once the hazardous effects of the radiation were understood.

SALEM Demolition is scheduled to begin Monday on the old Universal Steel building on Bridge Street, which has been an eyesore and occasional homeless encampment for more than a decade.
The city wants to build a 120-space parking lot on the polluted site that will be ready by the time construction begins next summer on the nearby Salem commuter rail station.
The MBTA is doing a $37 million upgrade of the train station, which will include a nearly 700-space parking garage. While the station will stay open during construction, many of the parking spaces will be lost. This small lot will help fill the gap.
Were still on target, Mayor Kim Driscoll said.
J.R. Vinagro Corp. of Rhode Island, which was awarded the $129,000 demolition contract, took out a permit this week.
Demolition of the former Universal Steel and Trading Co. building will be the first visible step in a complex project that has been in the works for years and is expected to cost more than $2.5 million.
Universal Steel ran a scrap metal and recycling plant that, among other items, handled fuel storage tanks and transformers laden with cancer-causing PCBs. The business went out of operation more than a decade ago.
The city acquired the property in a tax title foreclosure.
Driscoll and her staff have worked with state and federal agencies to secure funding. The most expensive piece is the remediation of hazardous materials, which also includes asbestos.
Remediation of the 1.2-acre site is expected to take three to five months.

NEW PORT RICHEY
Demolition ordinance approved
The city now has a demolition ordinance on the books to combat blight. The City Council unanimously passed the measure Tuesday evening that allows building officials to inspect abandoned properties, and if the structures threaten the public's health or welfare they may be slated for demolition. The ordinance, modeled after similar measures by Pasco County government and the cities of Zephyrhills and Port Richey, includes an extensive notification process of property owners prior to demolition. New Port Richey Mayor Bob Consalvo sought the ordinance after the city found itself wrangling with the owners of the dilapidated Walden Pond Mobile Home Park. The city is demolishing dozens of crumbling mobile homes in the park, just west of U.S. 19 at Oelsner Street, under an emergency resolution passed by council last month.

Demolition due to start on cricket clubhouse in Odiham
5:30pm Thursday 22nd November 2012 in News By Chris Gregory
DEMOLITION work is due to start on a cricket clubhouse in Odiham that was ravaged by fire.
The current building at Odiham and Greywell Cricket Club went up in flames in January this year when burglars tried to open a safe with an angle grinder.
The club then gained permission from Hart District Council to build a replacement building, with a bar for its members and changing rooms.
Last week, the club chose to award the construction contract to D W King, a building firm based in Four Marks.
Phil Thomas, club captain, said demolition work on the ruins will start in the next two weeks, with part of the timber structure of the new building up by Christmas.
It is hoped work will be completed by the end of April, with a grand opening in May.
Mr Thomas said: These are exciting times. We are looking forward to it and everything seems to be moving a bit quicker than we hoped.
While some of the funding will come from the England and Wales Cricket Board, and insurance, members must still raise half of the 250,000 total cost of the building.
