House Demolitions Begin After Ind. Explosion - November 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

A couple whose home was heavily damaged by a deadly house explosion that left part of an Indianapolis neighborhood in ruins watched quietly Tuesday as a large excavator pulled apart their shattered home -- the first of nearly three dozen slated for demolition in the coming month.

Brett and Nikki Cocherell stood subdued across the street as the excavator tore into their home's second floor, sending insulation and drywall dust flying and revealing its buttery-yellow and pale blue interior walls.

The couple left before the demolition was complete and did not speak to reporters, taking with them a small section of mortared bricks pulled from their home's rubble as a memento.

Mike Phillips, a neighbor who stood with the couple during part of the demolition work, said they were in a surprisingly good frame of mind as they watched their home come down.

"They were kind of joking, trying to keep it lighthearted. They're in good spirits," said Phillips, who was awaiting an engineer to examine his home, which was also damaged in the explosion.

City building inspectors have ordered the demolition of 29 houses in the Richmond Hill subdivision, while four other homes also will be razed once an arson investigation is completed into the Nov. 10 blast that killed a young couple.

Authorities have said they believe the explosion was intentional and caused by natural gas, but have released no other details in their ongoing investigation.

Jennifer and John Longworth, who lived next door to the house believed to be the epicenter of the blast, died in the explosion.

The explosion damaged about 90 of the 125 homes in the subdivision, causing an estimated $4.4 million in structural damage to those homes, said Adam Collins, a deputy director with Indianapolis' department of code enforcement.

The 33 homes set for demolition were the most severely damaged, but Collins said dozens of other houses suffered nonstructural damage such as shattered windows, cracked walls to buckled garage doors.

Demolition begins in Richmond Hill neighborhood - November 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    INDIANAPOLIS -

Crews tore down three homes in the Richmond Hill subdivision Tuesday as homeowners stood by and watched.

The homes were damaged in the Nov. 10th explosion that killed Dion and Jennifer Longworth.City building inspectors have ordered the demolition of 29 houses in the subdivision, six of which must come down this week. Four other homes will also be torn down once the arson investigation is complete.

As three homes fell, the tears were too numerous to count.

It was a torturous after noon for Abby Jackson, but she couldn't look away from the home her family loved every bit of.

"I had to watch even though this is hard. It is. Part ot me said not to come But this is for closure for my heart my mind my soul. I had to see see it be done," she said.

Down the block, Brett and Nikki Cocherell watched as well, holding on to each other as their home was torn apart. They took pictures and a few souvenir bricks, trying to save some memories from the demolition crew and dumpsters.

Neighbors Andrea and Brian Cox were relieved to see their badly damaged home coming down.

"It's what we wanted," Andrea said, for the safety of their family. The Coxes plan to rebuild.

Neighbors admit the demolitions are a difficult but an important and necessary step for a community trying to pull itself together and recover. Some of the Aldridge's best friends are now homeless.

Demolition at Easton iron foundry resumes - November 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition has resumed at the former iron foundry on Foundry Street.

The former Belcher Iron Foundry has been abandoned since 2007. It was the source of much consternation among neighbors, who considered it a source of noise and soot pollution.

Those bad feelings flared up again when a demolition company, The Total Group, started tearing down the building in July, apparently without properly wetting down materials, causing black soot to float through the air and onto nearby residents homes.

Later, officials realized the company hadnt filed the proper permits with the state Department of Environmental Protection. Easton Building Inspector Mark Trivett said they checked renovation rather than demolition on the state paperwork, although they did obtain an emergency demolition permit from the town, citing safety concerns. Work on the project was halted, leaving a partially destroyed factory.

Within the past week, work started up again with a new demolition contractor, Raynham-based Carney Environmental. A large water truck could be seen at the site with workers wetting down material as excavators and other large machines took apart the remaining structures.

They did it right, Trivett said on Wednesday. He added that he insisted that the company communicate with neighbors, including sending out mailers as well as old-fashioned door knocking.

Trivett and Health Inspector Mark Taylor also checked in with state environmental officials to make sure all the proper dust control and demolition permits were filed.

Carney also got approval to take down the building in the back of the site from the towns Conservation Commission on Monday. That boards approval was needed for a portion of the demolition because of a nearby wetland.
