Dennis Whedbees crew was rushing to prepare an oil well for pumping on the Sweet Grass Woman lease site, a speck of dusty plains rich with crude in Mandaree, North Dakota.
It was getting late that September afternoon in 2012. Whedbee, a 50-year-old derrickhand, was helping another worker remove a pipe fitting on top of the well when it suddenly blew.
As part of our ongoing investigation, we invite you to tell us about your experience navigating the workers comp system. Have something we should look into?

Oil and sludge pressurized at more than 700 pounds per square inch tore into Whedbees body, ripping his left arm off just below the elbow. Coworkers jerry-rigged a tourniquet from a sweatshirt and a ratchet strap to stanch his bleeding and got his wife on the phone.
Babe, he said, tell everyone I love them.

Environment
Mark Wakefield Demolition Ltd are dedicated to safeguarding the environment through our commitment to responsible environmental practices demonstrated through the extensive range of projects which we are involved in.
Sites often have brick and concrete as core building materials, and developers are becoming increasingly environmentally aware about the need to recycle and re-use where possible. Mark Wakefield Demolition Ltd runs its own mobile plant crusher which enables all suitable brick and concrete to be crushed, stockpiled and re-used further on in the redevelopment. This reduces the need to bring in stock thus being a financially viable and more environmentally friendly option.
Sustainability and recycling have always been of uppermost importance to Mark Wakefield Demolition ltd, and with recent throw away trends, we believe it is more important than ever to salvage and recycle everything we can, ensuring less is going to landfill. Where possible, we will recycle the building material, due to the increasing pressure on the earths resources and the ever increasing cost of disposal. Whether it bricks, stone tiles, windows, timber and steel or architectural features all can be cleaned for re-use elsewhere.
Depending on the site and its history, an environmental survey may be required in order to make sure that hazardous materials such as Asbestos are treated correctly and removed safely. We can provide comprehensive asbestos surveys, asbestos management reports and asbestos removal.
Protected species such as Bats, Great Crested Newts, Badgers, Otters, Water Voles, Cray Fish, Reptiles, Breeding Birds as well as protected trees and hedgerows may also need to be considered and surveyed. We can make all the arrangements and organise for the survey to minimise any disruption to the programme.

Demolition begins this week on the next phase of the Grant Road widening project.
The $17 million project will widen Grant between Stone and Park avenue to six lanes and will create indirect left turns at Stone Avenue and First Avenue. An earlier phase widened added indirect left turns at Oracle Road.
Here are three things you need to know.
1. Demolition could begin as early as Wednesday.
Five houses and two businesses will be torn down to make room for a wider Grant Road, said engineering project manager Beth Abramovitz. A lot of the landscaping will stay intact, she said.
A second round later this month will take six more commercial buildings.
The demolitions are happening now, but the roadway construction wont begin until later this year.
2. The city is working with a historic neighborhood on a mini salvage project.
Because some of the houses to be torn down are contributors to the Jefferson Park neighborhoods historic status designation, the city is photographing the buildings, Abramovitz said, and showing the pictures to people in the neighborhood who might want to salvage items.
Thats something new the city is doing, she said.

It may not be evident from the outside, but work to demolish the former Souderton Area High School has already begun.
As of now, we are pretty well completed with the first step, which is removal of asbestos, Tim Hendricks, of American Real Estate, said March 30.
Work to disconnect public utilities is also in process, he said.
Within 10 days to two weeks, physical demolition of the building should be under way, Hendricks said. Were looking at three months from start of demolition to completion.
Work has also begun to remove items such as lighting fixtures and light bulbs that must be removed before the demolition, he said.
Permission was given for the removal of sentimental items that had remained in the building, he said.
Items of value to be reused were previously removed, he said.
Whats left is of no consequential value, so that becomes part of the demolition trash, Hendricks said.
Souderton Borough Manager Mike Coll said he met March 18 with representatives of Trego Excavating, of Lionville, the company doing the excavation work.
The demolition area will be fenced off and there will be other requirements for the work, including that there be tire cleaning areas so trucks leaving the site do not track dirt out onto the roads, he said. Continued...

Progress on the Station Hill development continues at pace and one man got up close and personal with the demolition equipment.
Mark Anthony took the video of the work in Garrard Street and he's soundtracked it to music produced by his son.
Mr Anthony, who runs the DemolitionNews website, makes it his hobby to see what work is going on around the country.
Station Hill is a 900,000 square foot development which is due to have shops and up to 300 flats included.
It is being developed by Stanhope and Benson Elliott with TE Scudder carrying out the demolition.

Jason Margrave, director at Stanhope, said: "This is an important milestone in the transformation of an area that will ultimately become the heart of Reading.
"Reading is the commercial capital of the Thames Valley, making this site one of the most important schemes in the South East.
"We are pleased to be working with Scudder and moving forward with the preparatory work on site. As respected industry experts, Scudders expertise in complex demolition projects will prove invaluable in this town centre site."
Demolition includes the final days for Top Rank, which was a much-loved nightclub in the town.
