GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -
Demolition to four of the city's public piers that were severely damaged by Hurricane Isaac is now complete. Now, it's time to start repairs.
"This is great news for the City of Gulfport. Progress is being made, daily. The crews are out here working, and we're excited to get the people back on the piers," Gulfport spokesman Chris Vignes said.
Gulfport officials have been working closely with a contractor to make sure the four piers in Gulfport are quickly repaired so they can reopen.
Project Manager Walt Rode says so far, the process to get the piers back in usable shape has been smooth, even with a small delay.
"Some of our delays were directly related to the environmental, biological opinion review by Natural Marine Fishery Services under NOAA. FEMA had to get the clearance before they could approve the project, and once it was approved, we had to go through the typical bidding process required for procurement. From that point, we went out for bids and secured a contractor," Rode said.
Rode says because of the contractor's aggressiveness, they're actually ahead of schedule.
"We have a really good contractor, J.E. Borries. They're ahead of construction schedule. They've completed all of their demolition on all of our piers. They're currently working on the demolition of some of our jetties here at Urie Pier," Rode said.
Rode says as each pier is finished, it will be opened to the public. It's news many have been waiting to hear.
"We're very excited, and we're ready for the people to start getting use back out of their piers," Rode said.

Home Demolition in Jerusalem: They want our land. We need help to protect it.
Nureddin Amro and his brother Sharif Amro and their families were awakened at 5:30 am by over a hundred Israeli soldiers who came to demolish their home in the Wadi Al-Joz neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Both men are blind. The brothers live with their ill 79-year-old mother, their spouses and children. Nureddin has three young children, Sharif has four; all are under 14. Israeli soldiers pointed their guns in through the windows of the house while the children were still asleep and cut the electricity and phone lines to the house.
We were asleep. They banged on the doors and shouted. Soldiers completely surrounded the neighborhood. There were dogs and aircraft. It was frightening, said Nureddin. There was no advanced notice. No reason given. They announced that they came to demolish the house and they started doing it while we were still inside.
Nureddin asked for time to go to court or the municipality for an explanation, but the soldiers refused. The soldiers assaulted the family, kicking Sharif and beating everyone, including the women and children. They attacked us and locked us in one of the rooms. My son and brother were injured. They stayed for four hours and destroyed four rooms, the garden. They would not give us time to take anything from the rooms. All of our things, the childrens pets, their rabbits and chickens were killed under the rubble Sharif was taken to the hospital after a soldier kicked the blind man hard in the ankle. Israeli forces refused to even let the family salvage their belongings before they tore it down.
Nurredin is the founder and principal of the Siraj al-Quds School for visually impaired and sighted children in Jerusalem. He is a Synergos Institute Social Innovator and was recognized by the British Council for his leadership working for positive change and social development for people with special needs. According to Nureddin, there was no demolition order against the homes although there have been demolitions in the neighborhood before. They had received warnings a couple of months ago to clean up scrap wood, wires and materials that were around the house, and they did the cleaning as required.
While they were demolishing the rooms of the Amro familys home Israeli forces destroyed a fence on the neighboring Totah familys land, along with a shelter that housed a horse, chickens, and a dog. Soldiers also cut the familys internet and broke the water line. The father of the Totah family was beaten, handcuffed, and arrested; he was later released. As of this writing, the part of the house that remains standing where Nureddin and his brother are staying with their families; still has no electricity, water, sewage or telephone services. Soldiers returned to the familys home again this morning, moving the rubble that was visible from the street and threatening that they would be back.
Israeli authorities have already annexed land across from the Wadi Al-Joz neighborhood, creating a national park which encompasses an illegal Israeli settlement. Local residents reported, speaking of the constant threat of settlement expansion under the Israeli occupation, that they want to get rid of all the houses, all the neighborhood. They want to put their hands on this land from here to the Old City. ENDS

TAMPA The long-delayed demolition of the 58-year-old Friendship TrailBridge is back on track and could occur this year.
Hillsborough County commissioners approved a budget amendment Wednesday that includes $6 million for demolition of the former Gandy Bridge span connecting Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Added to money previously appropriated, the county will have up to $10 million to spend on the demolition.
The budget amendment, totaling $13.65 million, also will allow the county to complete improvements to seven intersections and one bridge as well as replacement of three wastewater pumping stations.
The county will get best and final bids from two companies this month for the TrailBridge demolition and will award the contract soon after, said Public Works Director John Lyons. The winning bid is sure to be more than the $5.2 million price one company offered to take down the bridge in 2012, Lyons said.
The old Gandy Bridge was converted to a recreational trail in December 1999. More than 500,000 joggers, cyclists and fishermen used the trail annually. But in 2008, engineers discovered some of the bridges structural steel and the concrete around it were eroding. Fearing someone would get hurt, authorities closed the bridge.
The bridge was slated for demolition in April 2012, but commissioners agreed to delay the action while bridge supporters developed a plan to reconstruct the trail and make it a linear park. The supporters thought they could find a private group that would shoulder most of the cost of developing and operating the bridge. In return, the group could make money through advertising, leases and rentals. The only money the supporters said they needed from the county was the $5.2 million appropriated to raze the bridge.
The deal never materialized, however, and the county had to rebid the demolition.
With the bridges fate nearly sealed, one die-hard defender continued to fight for its survival Wednesday. Neil Cosentino, a member of the committee that saved the bridge from a wrecking ball in 1997, argued its structure is safe. Cosentino even invited County Administrator Mike Merrill and commissioners to walk the bridge with him so he could prove its durability.
If we find anything wrong with the bridge, Ill buy (Merrill) any dinner he wants at Berns Steak House, Cosentino said. I also invite commissioners to do the same after we take the first walk to make sure the bridge is safe. Im absolutely sure the bridge is safe.
The road, bridge and wastewater improvements approved Wednesday will be funded out of property tax capital reserve funds and reserves from impact fees paid by developers to cover transportation improvements near their developments. Lyons said the projects will be put out for bids in May, June and July and should be under contract in the fall.

TITUSVILLE, Fla.
For months crews have been working to tear down what once was considered an eyesore mall in Titusville. Once the demolition is done, the Miracle City Mall will be transformed into a new open-air mall. But construction of the new mall could be delayed after demolition crews discovered more asbestos than they expected in one of the stores.
"(I'm) excited beyond my imagination. What an opportunity for Titusville to grow and excel," Titusville resident Chuck Tanner said. Plans are in place for a $60 million outdoor mall called Titus Landing. The new 300,000-square-foot mall will include a movie theater, restaurants and retail shops. The discovery of asbestos has brought demolition of the old mall to a halt. "Well, we knew there was some asbestos in there. We're hoping it to be mitigated. We'll just have to wait that out," Tanner said. Asbestos was once commonly used as insulation but it's now known to a carcinogen. That's why crews have had to stop demolition while the asbestos is removed. Workers at the site told Channel 9's Jeff Deal that they expect that will mean afour- to six-week delay. But people Deal spoke with said the wait will be worth it. "(I) wouldn't have to travel to Daytona, Merritt Island, Orlando -- it would be in the community," Tanner said. Some of asbestos has been removed and secured in a container. Eventually it will be taken to an approved site and buried. Barring any more delays, officials expect the first phase of the mall to be ready in October.

TITUSVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - The demolition of a Titusville mall is on hold, because of the health risk for workers.
For years, the Miracle City Mall has been a blighted eyesore in Titusville, but thanks to larger than expected amounts of asbestos discovered during demolition, it's now blighted and semi-demolished. It could remain this way for a month or more.
"Well, no one likes to see delays, but rare is the project that has no delays," said Titusville Mayor Jim Tulley.
He said the developer, AG Development out of Tampa, has not told city leaders about the asbestos-related delay, nor is it required to. According to county commissioner Robin Fisher's office, the developer has halted demolition while seeking the proper environmental permits to remove the additional asbestos.
Asbestos was used in construction in the 1960s and 1970s but was banned after it was associated with causing lung cancer. Asbestos must also be disposed of in a sealed waste container like this one we found on site here, but Titusville's mayor says the unexpected development should not cause residents concern.
"It sounds like the developer has done good planning, and he's got extra funding in his budget, so they were very conservative in their planning, so they are able to deal with the unexpected, and the unexpected always pops up."
The old Miracle City Mall is being demolished to make way for a new $60 million shopping center with new retailers, restaurants, and entertainment offerings, but the planned 325,000-square-foot facility, named Titus Landing, has faced numerous delays already.
