MANSFIELD, Ohio - In an effort to build better neighborhoods, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine joined Mansfield MayorTim Theakerand several otherRichland County officials Monday to watch as an abandoned house was torn down. The demolition of the home at 102 Richmond Ave. in Mansfield was made possible by a grant from DeWine's Demolition Grant Program.

"The City ofMansfield andRichland County have been proactive leaders in taking back their communities from the rot and blight caused by abandoned houses," DeWine said in a news release. "As we approach the one-year anniversaryof the National Mortgage Settlement, I am pleased that so many communities across Ohio have taken advantage of the Demolition Grant Program."

DeWine created the Demolition Grant Program last year. It helps stabilize and improve communities by removing blighted and abandoned homes with funds from the national mortgage settlement reached in February 2012. While an exact total of abandoned homes is not available, conservative estimates place the number of properties across Ohio that are in need of immediate demolition at 100,000.

The Ohio Attorney General's office made $75 million from the settlement available statewide for demolition grants. InRichland County, where the demolition occurred Monday, the county received its full allocation of $741,454.

DeWine said he will continue to travel to other demolition sites around Ohio to highlight the importance of this program.

"By smartly maximizing local resources with funds from the national foreclosure settlement, the Demolition Grant Program can help remedy a significant portion of the damage caused to Ohio neighborhoods and property owners by the foreclosure crisis," said DeWine.

Residents who have lost their homes to landslips are facing bills totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds for their demolition amid doubts over whether insurers will pay out.

Scarborough borough council, North Yorks, is understood to have sent bills for at least 40,000 each to the owners of five demolished cottages in Whitby after condemning the homes when their gardens fell away in November (Xetra: A0Z24E - news) .

Residents of four doomed bungalows left teetering dangerously close to the cliff edge at Knipe Point, also in Scarborough, following the landslip there last month, are also expected to receive hefty invoices for the cost of knocking them down.

But the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said the councils decision to demolish the properties before they succumbed to the force of nature could mean that policy providers might not be obliged to pay out towards the work.

A spokesman said: Landslides are generally covered but it doesnt usually extend to cover demolition of the houses that is something someone has decided to do and insurance is there to cover the unforeseen.

Insurers could also refuse to pay out if the landslip is deemed to be due to coastal erosion, the spokesman said.

The council disputes the ABI claims and said some insurers had already accepted liability and paid out in full including the cost of demolition and talks were being held with others.

TUSCALOOSA | Demolition has begun on the former armory on 10th Avenue, beginning the process of converting the area into a new park and green space for West Tuscaloosa residents.

The work is taking place directly across the street from the infrastructure work on Rosedale Courts Phase II, a $13 million development that will consist of 86 housing units under the operation of the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority.

Phase II construction is taking place in the shadow of Rosedales Phase I, for which a ribbon cutting ceremony was held last month on the $18.5 million complex with 88 affordable living units.

The decision to convert the former Armed Forces Reserve Center to a public park area for these and other residents was endorsed in December by the City Councils Public Projects Committee after a University of Alabama plan to use the facility fell apart.

A final decision to use the space as a park has yet to be made by the City Council, but the demolition and site clearing work expected to take approximately a month, city officials said indicates that this approval is imminent.

The university intended to use the building to house UAs fleet of school-owned vehicles, garage services and its environmental health department.

But a requirement under the facility take-over plan with the U.S. Department of Defense, which managed the armory, required the university to use the existing buildings and did not allow for demolition.

At first, it appeared the damage to the building caused by the tornado of April 27, 2011 the roof was damaged and windows blew out did not cause enough structural damage to warrant significant renovations.

Some Intense Demolition Game
I #39;m starting to like Demolition more and more. Team Deathmatch and Domination were the gametypes that I was particularly into in the previous titles, but since the positions of the flags in Dom in BO2 were apparently determined by a totally thoughtless idiot, and TDM is just slow, Demolition really shines for me right now (and Hardpoint, by the way, can suck it too).
