IOWA CITY Despite the rising cost of construction projects, plans to demolish Iowa Citys now-closed north Wastewater Treatment Plant managed to come in several million dollars below the original estimate.
On Tuesday, the Iowa City Council will vote on awarding a contract for the wastewater plant demolition project to Minnesota-based Veit & Company, Inc.
Veit & Companys roughly $2.05 million bid for the project is less than half the $5.5 million estimate for the project, which was drafted by a private engineering firm.
Veit & Companys bid was the lowest of five received, with the highest still roughly $300,000 below the estimate.
Were very pleased they came in where they did, Ben Clark, Iowa City senior civil engineer, said of the bids.
That said, Clark noted that while bids for construction projects tend to come in at or higher than estimates these days due to a high demand for contractors, demolition projects are often a wild card.
With demolition its a little bit hard to estimate, Clark said.
Factors in pricing depend on which company bids specialty contractors tend to bid lower and the manner in which demolition will take place moving and disposing materials comes with an added cost.
For the wastewater project, Veit & Company, which specializes in waste management, will use much of the crushed materials created in the demolition process as backfill for the land.
Well minimize hauling, we wont haul any more material to the site, Clark said, adding that recycling and salvaging materials will be key.

LOCKPORT The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency resumed work this week on the demolition of the former Flintkote plant on Mill Street in Lockport.
The plant, which was partially torn down last fall, is believed to be one of the primary sources of pollution in Eighteen Mile Creek, which flows from Lockport to Lake Ontario.
The entire creek corridor has been declared a federal Superfund site. The EPA last fall bought five homes on Water Street in Lockport, whose back yards bordered the creek, and the residents were relocated.
EPA spokesman Michael Basile said the boarded-up houses will be torn down this year, and a chain-link fence will encircle the site.
Basile said the location of the former Water Street homes may be used as a staging area for future cleanup work.
Meanwhile, the demolition of Flintkote is targeted to be complete by the end of May, Basile said.
The hope is that we will have the walls down. There may still be debris piles (in late May), he said.
Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey said the demolition will be followed by more soil testing at the site.
Basile said subsequent work will depend on what we find and dont find after the Flintkote building is gone.
The former building materials plant was abandoned after a 1971 fire. The City of Lockport could have foreclosed on it for many years because of unpaid property taxes, but declined to do so because it feared being stuck with the cleanup bill.

It may not be evident from the outside, but work to demolish the former Souderton Area High School has already begun.
As of now, we are pretty well completed with the first step, which is removal of asbestos, Tim Hendricks, of American Real Estate, said March 30.
Work to disconnect public utilities is also in process, he said.
Within 10 days to two weeks, physical demolition of the building should be under way, Hendricks said. Were looking at three months from start of demolition to completion.
Work has also begun to remove items such as lighting fixtures and light bulbs that must be removed before the demolition, he said.
Permission was given for the removal of sentimental items that had remained in the building, he said.
Items of value to be reused were previously removed, he said.
Whats left is of no consequential value, so that becomes part of the demolition trash, Hendricks said.
Souderton Borough Manager Mike Coll said he met March 18 with representatives of Trego Excavating, of Lionville, the company doing the excavation work.
The demolition area will be fenced off and there will be other requirements for the work, including that there be tire cleaning areas so trucks leaving the site do not track dirt out onto the roads, he said. Continued...
