Demolition of eyesore flats will boost town - April 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

It follows a campaign by residents and councillors in Johnstone to tear down the eyesore flats in Craigdonald Place, which had become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

Yesterday approval was given for a contractor to begin the job of demolition with an estimated cost of 200,000.

Councillor Tommy Williams, convener of Renfrewshire Council's Housing Policy Board, said: "These flats have long been an eyesore and I'm pleased to announce that demolition will start on May 15."

The Evening Times reported in December how opposition Johnstone councillor Andy Doig had accused Renfrewshire Council of dragging its feet over the demolition.

Councillor Doig has now welcomed the decision by Renfrewshire Council's Procurement Sub Committee to authorise the contract for demolition.

He added: "Issues with the Craigdonald Flats were identified by the last SNP led administration in June 2010, and the consensus at that time was that given both the cost of investment needed to bring them up to an acceptable standard, and the fact that even then this would be no guarantee of their long term sustainability, it was agreed that demolition would be the best solution.

"Over recent years the process had been held up due to the reluctance of one owner to settle with the council, and in that period the flats sadly became a focus both for vermin, and for anti- social behaviour and fire-raising, causing much anguish to Johnstone town centre constituents.

"I have consistently raised the need for action to be taken so I am delighted that the demolition is moving forward.

"Johnstone town centre has great potential and I believe the removal of the flats will herald new opportunities for further investment in the town by business, or possible use of the site for new housebuilding.

"This will bring more people into the town which, in turn, will help town centre traders to remain viable so this is another step to a new powerhouse Johnstone."

Post-demolition, crews hurry to clear City Hall rubble - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a matter of eight seconds, City Hall was reduced to a pile of rubble Sunday morning.

"Everyone on the demolition team that I spoke to said it went absolutelytextbook, aside from a few pebbles and a few broken windows," said City Engineer Alan Shubert, the project manager for the ballpark.

The demolition of City Hall clears the way for construction to begin on the Triple-A baseball stadium, but first, crews will need to remove the mound of rubble.

Monday, tractors with big claws were seen scooping up the debris that will then be taken to the Clint landfill.

One construction vehicle even has a small wrecking ball on it.

Shubert estimates it will take about 1,000 truckloads to clear the site before ballpark construction can begin.

Shubert said the goal is to have everything cleared in the next two to three weeks.

"The urgency really is to get started on the ballpark project. We'd like to have all of that out of there within the next two weeks. I'll doubt if well make it but they'll do their level best," said Shubert.

But work on what will be the retaining wall on Missouri Street has already begun.

"We are asking them to remove around the back of the pile where we are starting on the retaining wall so we can start construction even if they're not done hauling,"said Shubert.

Asbestos fears at refinery demolition - April 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

There has been another health scare for workers at the Port Stanvac refinery demolition site.

7News understands an excavator unearthed a large amount of asbestos last Saturday week.

It is believed as many as 12 workers were in the immediate area at the time.

An exclusion zone has been established, but there are fears exposed contractors werent properly decontaminated.

It is understood tests on their clothes later revealed traces of the potentially deadly substance.

It is not unusual for asbestos to be found on site there is apparently lots of it just below the grounds surface.

But some workers are worried about what they call a lack of procedure to protect them from it.

The construction workers union is also concerned the demolition contractor isnt keeping staff in the loop.

Workers only recently returned to the site after being sent home for about three weeks when traces of potentially lethal legionella were found in drinking water.

Mobil says every step is being taken to ensure the safety of its staff.

Demolition means real work begins on El Paso's new baseball stadium - April 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Debris flies from the former City Hall building as the charges are detonated Sunday.

As the 10-story, 34-year-old former City Hall building came crumbling down Sunday morning, a guest watching the implosion at the DoubleTree Hotel just blocks away shouted, "Play Ball!"

The demolition marked a time of change, where El Paso's Downtown skyline will no longer be defined by a concrete and glass government structure but a Triple-A baseball stadium that city officials hope will invigorate economic development.

The Tucson Padres, an affiliate with Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres, are expected to play in El Paso in April 2014. The minor league team was bought by MountainStar Sports Group, a team of local investors.

Many who watched the implosion wipe away a long-standing building said they felt

"It's sad because there are so many great memories in that building and you just remember driving up Interstate 10 and seeing City Hall and thinking, "This is El Paso,'" said Jim Scherr, who owns the DoubleTree Hotel Downtown and was once on the City Council. "But I think at the end of the day, this is progress and hopefully will make El Paso better."

City Hall stood right where home plate will be, and from where ballpark visitors will be able to see the Franklin Mountains. The symbolism was not lost on the city's Ballpark Project Engineer Alan Shubert, who called the demolition a new beginning and a milestone.

The construction of the ballpark will take 11 months, and work has already begun. Just to the north of the 1,000 truckloads worth of debris, the base of the outfield retaining wall can be easily seen.

Much of the electric line work is already completed.

Hazleton Demolition Effects - April 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

HAZLETON The crane was in position to begin demolition of a massive smokestack but it appeared too short to do the job.

There were other also other concerns.

State environmental officials say when the stack is torn down the air will be monitored, in case the stack contains cancer-causing asbestos.

That testing is good news to neighbor Richard Onuschak.

Yeah, I think thats a good idea, keep it as safe as possible, Onuschak said.

Penn Earth Works is doing the job and one of their employees will have the job of being lifted to the top of the 130 foot stack and begin taking it apart.

Lee Houser said hes looking forward to the experience.

Ive never been up that high before but I should be pretty safe in that basket. Im not too worried about it. We use some electric chipping guns and hammers. I guess were going to try to knock everything down inside as we go down.

On Friday, Hazleton city officials called for the voluntary evacuation of homes and closed several businesses, fearing the smokestack would collapse.

Lorie Malloy said she helps manage one of the closed businesses.

Demolition of City Hall gets El Paso a big step closer to baseball - April 15, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The demolition of the former City Hall was a home run, reducing the 10-story building to a pile of rubble.

For many who watched the demolition, it means the city is really going to bring baseball back to the borderland.

Despite "Save City Hall" petitions, rallies and even court cases, "D-day" eventually arrived.

"I wanted to make sure we were going to get the best view, so I was here really early," said Angel Herrera, who found a great view from the Union Plaza Garage, just about 200 yards from the blast.

If the months leading up to the demolition were long, the implosion was anything but.

"From the first boom to the time it was over, it was really fast," said Herrera.

The quick blast might have made it hard for some to get the best shot. "I barely got my camera ready," said Herrera.

It is full-speed ahead from now until opening day without glancing back.

Maggie Tercerco is a native El Pasoan, who now lives in SanDiego. She said she's looking forward to cheering for the same ball club, in her two hometowns.

"I think this ballpark is going to benefit El Paso," said Tercerco.
