Demolition continues in downtown Unionville - June 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    UNIONVILLE, MO. --

A little more than a month ago, the citizens of Unionville woke up to a collapsed building downtown. KTVO has received calls from residents who said the demolition process is too slow.

On the corner of 17th and Main, the building that collapsed on April 8 housed a local photography studio called Lace Image Photography. Local businesses said contractors are not working fast enough, and sometimes not at all. They also said the loss of parking space is affecting their business. Unionville City Administrator John Roach said the bricks are being saved for a reason. The bricks have been piled up there so that once the subfloor is gone the bricks will actually go into the hole, Roach said. The contractor has a brick crusher and makes it for a nice fill and saves a little bit a money.

Roach said contractors were delayed about two weeks. The back side of that building was actually connected to the adjacent building, he said. So, they had to re-plan and have engineers come out and look at it so it delayed the process a week in a half or so.

Roach said citizens have been calling him about the demolition. He said he stays in contact with the owners and contractors, but the citys responsibility is to protect the public. It is up to the owners and the insurance companies to kind of hash everything out and they've been working pretty well at it, but (residents are) still free to call up here and ask questions and get updates.

Roach said he hopes residents will be patient. I know it's been a headache for most of the folks here in town, because we've had to detour and it's caused no parking issues. And, hopefully we'll see the light real soon and our little town can get back to normal.

Demolition of historic site continues - June 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MONTREAL - Quebecs Culture and Communications Department has ordered a developer to stop demolishing the foundations of a historic gasometer in Griffintown to allow archeologists to study and document the site.

But bulldozers continued to smash the vestiges all last week and the developer insisted he was never told to halt the demolition.

The last information (I got) is that (last) Monday morning, there was a contact with the cultural affairs department and the department said we didnt have to stop, said Jacques Vincent, co-president of Prvel.

Annie LeGruiec, a communications officer with the culture department, gave a very different version.

We asked the developer not to do any work on or around the vestiges, she said.

It was agreed with him that there would not be any more excavation. The zone which is forbidden is the summit of the structure and the perimeter in order not to weaken the vestiges, which are enormous, LeGruiec added.

She added that the culture department did not check whether the order had been followed.

Its on the developers good faith, she said.

Work crews discovered the massive foundations the week before last while excavating the site for a 20-storey condo tower at the southwest corner of Ann and Ottawa Sts.

The round brick structure, about 90 metres in diameter, once held tanks used to store the gas that lit Montreals streets.

Fire accident building demolition suspended - June 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

With the building owners of Vignesvar Cresta on Avanashi Road here obtaining another direction from the Madras High Court on Saturday, staying the demolition orders of the District Collector, the authorities stopped pulling down of the structure on Sunday.

A fire that broke out in the building on April 25 claimed the lives of four women and left nine injured. Based on orders issued by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) and the District Collector, who is also the chairman of Coimbatore Local Planning Authority (LPA), the officials started demolition of the second and third floors of Vignesvar Cresta on Friday. Demolition had continued on Saturday.

Following the April 25 fire accident, the RDO had conducted an inquiry and issued demolition orders as the building owners had not given any explanation to the notices issued to them though they were given time to do so.

The District Collector had also issued demolition orders of the building saying that it violated the rules of the Town and Country Planning Act. The building owners had approached the Madras High Court and obtained a stay on Friday against the demolition order issued by the RDO.

The officials continued the demolition on Saturday based on the orders issued by the District Collector despite the building owners resistance to the move.

An LPA official told The Hindu on Sunday that they did not continue with the demolition on Sunday as the building owners had obtained another stay on Saturday against the orders of the District Collector. The second and third floors had been demolished during the two days (Friday and Saturday).
