Russian Man Films Own Death in Demolition Accident - June 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MOSCOW, June 20 (RIA Novosti) - A man filmed his own death while recording demolition works in Lipetsk, Central Russia, regional broadcaster Most TV reported on Wednesday.

Yevgeny Titov, a 29-year-old shop assistant, took a break to capture the demolition of a two-storey building near his workplace on a mobile phone camera.

Workers tried to tear the brick structure down by making a bulldozer to pull steel cables attached to the buildings outer wall.

Judging by Titovs chuckle and attempts to encourage the bulldozer driver, the man assumed that his life was in no danger and the distance was safe. Then a part of the building finally gave way and crashed down, sending huge chunks of bricks and concrete into the air.

The debris ricocheted from the asphalt and flew towards a group of spectators. A man who is seen standing closer to the site of the accident and also filming the event, managed to dodge the rubble, but Titov was knocked down by falling bricks.

The record continued as the phone owner was lying unconscious on the ground, with people running around him and calling for help.

Titov succumbed to his injuries in hospital. According to the victims relatives, all his ribs were fractured and his pelvis was smashed by the falling rubble. The man also suffered massive internal injuries and a severe head wound.

A criminal case was launched into suspected violation of safety rules, which resulted in an accidental death, the local investigative department said.

The tragedy occurred on June 16, but the victims relatives decided to make the record public only recently in a bid to attract media attention to the incident. YouTube later removed the video, saying the footage violated its content policies.

Community turns out for helicopter rides, demolition derby at the fair - June 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

After a week of hearing the helicopter at the Lenoir County Agricultural Fair go over their house, Crystal Kennedy and her three daughters were more than ready to try it out for themselves Saturday.

All week long, theyve been watching it right from their bedroom windows, Kennedy said as she watched 8-year-old Cassidy ride a roller coaster with a dragon theme on the midway her younger daughters Makayla, 7, and Emma Grace, 6 were with her watching.

Cassidy Kennedy was eager to get on the helicopter, which takes fairgoers above the midway, a short distance across N.C. 11 South and then back to the landing area between the midway and the demolition derby track.

It was weird, Cassidy said of the experience of having the helicopter over her home. It sounds like vibrating.

Fairgoers who had been on the chopper described the experience as awesome.

Its a beautiful view, a nice smooth ride, said Stephanie Glass of the Baltimore, Md. area.

Glass came to the fair Saturday with her cousin and brother, along with family members they were visiting in New Bern.

I think its pretty nice, she said. Theyve got a lot of good stuff here. Its nice to see the community get together.

In addition to the helicopter rides, major draws at Lenoir Countys 57th annual fair included a circus, complete with a globe of death motorcycle cage, a human cannonball, and more.

Plus fair food everybody loves fair food, said Waylon Adams, president of the Lenoir County Fair Association.

Central School demolition contract OK’d - June 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By ROSE SCHNEIDER

    Staff Writer

Findlay school board voted Monday to approve a demolition contract for the academic wing of Central Middle School that will cost $137,000 less than expected.

Miller Contracting Group, of Ottoville, was awarded the contract for $313,500.

District Treasurer Mike Barnhart said the board had estimated the contract would cost about $451,000.

"This is another bid, another project, that has come in under bid for us," board President Shane Pochard said. "We've been extremely successful through this whole building plan as far as funding is concerned, so that's outstanding."

All of Central won't be razed. Demolition of the academic wing will set in motion a project to transform the now-closed middle school's auditorium into a nonprofit performing arts center.

Assistant Superintendent Craig Kupferberg said demolition of the academic wing will begin in mid-July and should be finished by October.

The demolition is a part of the $57 million project that built Findlay's three new schools. The Ohio School Facilities Commission covered 68 percent of the price tag while the district is paying for 32 percent with a 4.3-mill bond issue, passed by voters in 2009.

Barnhart said the board received 12 bids for the demolition, but Miller Contracting offered the lowest price.

Major demolition inside iconic downtown building to begin soon - June 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Major demolition inside the old McCurdy Hotel in Downtown Evansville should begin in just a few months.

The Kunkel Group plans to convert the almost 100-year-old building into high-end apartments.

It's pretty run down right now with some windows boarded up, but a little over a year from now, the old McCurdy Hotel along Riverside Drive should be restored to its former glory.

The Kunkel Group hopes to start demolition work in September or October, once all of their financing is in place.

They plan to turn the building into 96 luxury apartments, mostly one and two bedrooms, with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

The Kunkel Group says they plan to add a restaurant that will be open to the public and they'll turn part of the first floor into space that can be used for banquets and weddings.

The building has been empty for several years, and once you go inside, you can tell it's seen better days.

There are still beautiful design features, detailed plasterwork and a grand lobby with 25 foot ceilings.

Adam Kunkel, the Kunkel Group's Vice President, says they want to preserve as much of the historical elements of the old hotel as they can.
