Church survives a ‘demolition sandwich’ - July 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A church in Dundee, Scotland, was the meat in a 'demolition-sandwich' when two neighbouring tower blocks were blown down.

St Martin's Episcopal Church is situated just metres from Butterburn and Bucklemucker Court multi-storeys, which have been razed to the ground.

The congregation was decanted elsewhere for their Sunday worship, where prayers were said for the church to survive intact.

The Bishop of Brechin, the Right Reverend Dr Nigel Peyton, told Sky News before the demolition: 'We'll be praying for everyone involved in the whole day, really.

'There'll be a lot of other neighbours anxious about their properties and we'll be praying for them. We are confident that the blow down of the 'multis' will go well.

'We've made our preparations, we've talked to the contractors and have a lot of confidence in them and we've certainly told our insurers!'

Preparations for the plume of dust included sealing the church organ in plastic, removing valuable items from the premises and taping up exterior doors.

The demolition of the 25-storey blocks removed two landmarks that have been prominent on the Dundee skyline since 1971.

The 374 flats were demolished by explosives placed strategically in the structure of the buildings.

More than 10,000 detonators were used by the contractors SAFEDEM, which has worked on the tower blocks for several months, removing internal fittings and weakening support walls prior to the final 'blow down'.

National group urges WMU to reconsider demolition - July 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) The Houston Astrodome, one-room schoolhouses in Montana and a lighthouse on the island of Martha's Vineyard all made this year's list of America's 11 Most Endangered Places.

Western Michigan University's historic East Campus did not, according to the Kalamazoo Gazette ( http://bit.ly/10l7VJd ).

But, in a letter to President John Dunn dated June 18, the National Trust for Historic Preservation said it gave serious consideration to adding the four buildings to the list. Questions of timing kept it from a spot, not historic merit, the letter said.

"At the National Trust for Historic Preservation, we seriously considered placing Western Michigan University's historic East Campus on our 'America's 11 Most Endangered List,'" wrote John Hildreth, vice president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "Our understanding that the buildings might be demolished before we go to press made that recognition impossible. However, that does not diminish our concern."

Phase 1 of the demolition isn't due to start until late this summer, according to WMU.

While the list came out June 19, the 11 sites were chosen before the university released its demolition timeline in late May, explained Genell Scheurell, senior field officer in the NTHP's Chicago Field Office.

The letter commended Friends of Historic East Campus, which nominated the buildings for America's Most Endangered Places, for its campaign to find an adaptive reuse for the buildings and said the NTHP "strongly" supports FOHEC's suggestion that WMU delay demolition and convene a community consultation panel to find alternate suggestions for use.

"We hope the university will reconsider its current plans and we will be happy to assist it and the community to come together now to identify how all of East Campus may be returned to productive use," the letter concluded.

The letter to WMU offering NTHP assistance was unusual, but not unique, Scheurell said.

"They are just breathtakingly beautiful buildings and certainly worth saving," said Scheurell. "It wasn't extraordinary, but it's not something we do as a matter of course."

Demolition attempt turns violent in QC - July 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

VIOLENCE BREAKS. Residents and anti-riot police clash as the latter destroy the barricade by the residents during a demolition on shanties along Agham Road in Quezon City. Photo by Ed Alba.

MANILA, Philippines A demolition plan turned violent on Monday, July 1, as informal settlers clashed with policemen along Agham Road in Quezon City.

Informal settlers threw rocks, broken glass, and feces at policemen, who in turn fired shots to control the area.

The protesters then marched to the Quezon City hall where they held a program to protest the demolition plans. They were joined by other militant groups like Kabataan, Anakpawis and Kadamay.

The police resorted into violence as the militants tried to enter the city hall. They were dispersed by policemen via water cannons. Two people were injured from the side of the militants.

Anakbayan chairperson Vencer Crisostomo said that the demonstrators merely wanted to have a dialogue with the Quezon City government but they were instead answered with violence.

"Nagdedemand ang urban poor groups ng sagot sa Quezon City government kung bakit nagkakaroon ng demolisyon sa hanay ng mga maralita at ang hinarap sa kanila ng mga pulisya," Crisostomo said.

Demolition on US-24 bridge underway - July 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of the N.W. US-24 highway bridge began Sunday and will continue through Wednesdays daylight hours.

Crews at the US-24 and N.W. Topeka Boulevard exchange started the demolition project by working on taking out the approach pavement near the bridge Sunday. By Monday afternoon, workers were using multiple excavators and a convoy of dump trucks to pull up about 500 feet of concrete on either side of the bridge. The construction site was loud and dusty with all of the large equipment, concrete dust and passing traffic.

Workers also had started to form a dirt bed underneath the bridge to act as a cushion for concrete falling from overhead. The crews will be working on the demolition from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day until the bridge is demolished.

This demolition starts the second phase of the overall project for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

As with any change or phase change there is a lot of new work to be done, said KDOT spokeswoman Kimberly Qualls. We look at traffic changes and work with the city on a variety of things to make sure we have the best possible solution for the situation. Each change has a different set of circumstances, and despite planning, you cant always anticipate what drivers will do.

Rather than using implosions to take down the bridge, KDOT will be demolishing the bridge by using excavators with jackhammer attachments.

Although it is typical for bridges to be demolished via implosions, Qualls said Monday that implosions werent a viable option in this scenario.

This is a heavily trafficked corridor, and there are a lot of businesses around this exchange, Qualls said. The area is so small and concise, and the bridge is small enough that implosions really werent necessary.

The US-24 and N.W. Topeka exchange opened in 1941 as the first cloverleaf exchange in Kansas at a price of $168,500. Today, the project that calls for the replacement of the bridge, resurfacing the interchange ramps and adding new pavement on either side of the bridge will cost $2.3 million. The contractor for the project is RA Knapp Construction, of Kansas City, Kan.

Both eastbound and westbound traffic on US-24 will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the bypass routes through late September, and the zone will post a 35-mph speed limit and a 14-foot wide lane restriction.
