MANILA, Philippines A demolition of homes in Barangay Bignay, Valenzuela turned violent on Thursday after some of the residents threw rocks and human feces at the demolition team.
A member of the demolition team, Franklin Bravo, was wounded after he was hit by a rock.
Authorities arrested one of the informal settlers who threw rocks. He was later identified as Ricardo Gagat.
Valenzuela City officials said the residents were notified to relocate last year because the area is getting overpopulated.
In July 2012, data showed that 58 families lived in the barangay, but this figure swelled to 209 families in the recent count.
Authorities said the area has also been tagged as a danger zone because the homes are located under a transmission line.
The residents eventually agreed to relocate Thursday afternoon after receiving financial assistance amounting to P5,000 per family.
In Barangay Cupang, Muntinlupa, around 270 families were given until next week to leave their homes. The illegal settlers were promised financial assistance of around P30,000 per family. -- Report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
Watervliet
The rear of the former St. Patrick's School gym has been ripped away as demolition resumed at the former church site.
The school is the next building to be razed to clear the 3.5-acre site of the former St. Patrick's Church complex for a Price Chopper supermarket and two smaller commercial buildings.
The demolition of the school by Dan's Hauling and Demo began Wednesday. Still visible were the basketball hoop supports still hanging in the gym and its pale green walls.
Recently, the only activity at the site at 19th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues has been the clearing of bricks and other debris left from the demolition of the church and rectory.
After the school is knocked down only six row houses will be left at the rear of the property.
Nigro Companies is developing the property for the 40,200-square-foot supermarket and commercial buildings.
The church was modeled after the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at Lourdes, France. It had a 137-foot bell tower that resisted initials efforts to pull it down a project that spurred an emotional debate in the small city.
The bell was removed from the tower and donated by Nigro Companies and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish to the Watervliet Historical Society. The bell is on display outside the society's museum at 1501 First Ave.
The four-ton bell was cast in 1906 by Meneely Bell Co. of West Troy, whose foundry was on the present Watervliet Public Library site.

Demolition of school begins

Against a hail of rocks and excrement, a demolition team backed by some 300 policemen moved in Thursday morning to tear down around 50 houses in a slum community that had formed precariously under high-voltage transmission lines in Valenzuela City.
A crewman was wounded as violence erupted while authorities were still preparing to clear the illegal settlements on Hulo Street, Friendsville Subdivision, in Barangay Bignay. The site had been declared a hazardous area by the city government.
Frank Bravo, a member of the citys engineering crew, was wounded in the chest and feet one of his toenails was torn offafter several residents hurled rocks and bags containing feces at his team, according to Public Information Officer Ahna Mejia.
Mejia, who was also at the site, said the residents were accompanied by members of militant groups in repulsing the demolition men, who arrived in the area with a police contingent providing security.
As we were approaching the demolition area, someone started throwing rocks and the others followed, she said, noting that the authorities exercised maximum tolerance throughout the operation.
The police later arrested Ricardo Gagap, who they said was not a resident but a member of the militant group Anakbayan. Criminal charges would be filed against Gagap, Mejia said.
But Gagaps wife Vangie maintained that they were residents in the area and denied that Gagap started the assault. On the contrary, she said, her husband wanted to negotiate properly with the demolition team.
I was surprised when he was suddenly arrested, Vangie said.
Val Dimayuga, media officer of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap, one of the urban-poor groups claiming to represent the 139 families in the area, said the residents may have been provoked into throwing rocks because of the demolition teams forcible entry into the neighborhood.
