Demolition crews now turn to Sears building's facade - August 2, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sean Carlin, Inquirer Staff Writer Posted: Friday, August 2, 2013, 1:08 AM

Under gray skies and drenching rains Thursday morning, construction crews in Camden started to tear away at the facade of the former Sears, Roebuck & Co. store, almost two months after demolition started June 5.

While much of the rear of the structure on the Admiral Wilson Boulevard now lies in a pile of bricks and steel, the front facade and the side facing Memorial Avenue remained largely intact until Thursday.

About 9 a.m., workers from Winzinger Inc. of Hainesport slowly began taking out large chunks of the top of the facade, transforming the front of the building into a skeleton of steel girders.

The site is owned by Campbell Soup Co., which is clearing the area for an office park.

The building was built in 1927 and was home to Sears until 1971, when it closed. For 42 years it has been in progressive deterioration, worsened by a two-alarm fire in December.

Campbell bought the vacant building in June 2012 for $3.5 million. The company, which has headquarters nearby, is planning an office park of 250,000 to 500,000 square feet to attract other businesses. It is not known if any companies have indicated interest.

"We have always believed that the former Sears parcel is critical to having a viable footprint for the office park project," Richard Landers, Campbell vice president of tax and real estate, said when demolition started. "We are pleased to be moving forward with our development plans."

Officials initially said the demolition would take about eight weeks, but Campbell now expects it to be completed by the end of the summer.

Demolition day named for Port Kembla stack - August 1, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Aug. 2, 2013, 4:10 a.m.

Port Kembla Copper has set a date to bring down the stack - Friday, September 6.

General manager Ian Wilson said explosives would be used to blow out a wedge at the base on the northern side of the 200-metre structure, causing it to fall in that direction and land entirely within the Port Kembla Copper (PKC) site.

However, he said there would be an exclusion zone of 250 metres around the site on the day.

"There are about 30 houses and 50 commercial and mixed-use premises within the planned exclusion zone in place during the demolition, and we'll be asking those residents to relocate to a nearby reception centre for a few hours while the removal is under way," Mr Wilson said.

Chikarovski backs Port Kembla stack plan

A group called Stack 360 is still investigating ways to turn the structure into something with cultural and tourism value.

The deadline for that is August 12 and Mr Wilson said the demolition was a contingency plan.

If an alternative was discovered, the planned demolition would be suspended.

"PKC take a great interest as to the sustainability of any stack redevelopment project," he said.

(WMC-TV) - The demolition of a historic building in Midtown will be delayed until a lawsuit filed in court Thursday is resolved.

A restraining order was granted by a chancery court judge.

The Nineteenth Century Club is a 106-year-old mansion on Union Avenue. A war over whether it should stay or go was waged when its new owners won the building at auction.

Action News 5's Jason Miles is working to learn more about the lawsuit and the judge's decision to put the demolition on hold. Tune into AN5 at 6 p.m. for the very latest.
