COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Demolition has begun on a nearly 60-year-old coliseum at Texas A&M University as part of $450 million redevelopment of Kyle Field.
Crews on Monday began tearing down G. Rollie White Coliseum in College Station. A website for demolition progress shows most of 1 side of the coliseum was down by Tuesday.
The gymnasium formerly was home to athletic events, graduations, concerts and the A&M Letterman's Association, which has relocated.
A&M facilities official Russ Wallace says demolition should be completed by mid-September. Wallace says construction will be suspended on Thursdays or Fridays before home football games at Kyle Field.
Regents this spring approved the redevelopment plan to make Kyle Field the largest stadium in the Southeastern Conference - expanding from nearly 83,000 seats to capacity of 102,500.

The tan bricks that crumbled off of Texas A&M's G. Rollie White Coliseum marked the end of a campus landmark and the beginning of Kyle Field renovations.
A little before noon Monday, a construction vehicle begin to peel off the brick facade on the top floor of the 59-year-old gymnasium that housed A&M volleyball and the A&M Letterman's Association. The building was home to graduations, concerts and athletic events.
Three to four dozen spectators gathered to watch the beginning of the slow demolition that will stretch into September. As the rubble crashed to the ground, students, faculty and staff members stopped to take it in, and parents, many of whom were in town for freshman orientations, reminisced about the building.
"That's where we crossed the stage, it was in G. Rollie," said Robert Lagoudis, a 1993 graduate of A&M who was accompanied by his wife Donna, class of 1990.
The Lagoudises made the trip to College Station from Bulverde, just north of San Antonio, to tour campus with their daughter, who is going into her senior year.
"Having only been back on campus a few times since we've graduated, it's neat to see how much it's grown," said Robert Lagoudis. "I know that progress comes with a price, obviously, and if that means that old things, even things that were sentimental, have to go, so be it."
Still, the demolition was met with little fanfare and was downplayed by university officials because the construction will be spread out over a period of weeks.
Russ Wallace, director of facilities, planning and construction for the A&M System, said the construction company will first remove the brick facade to expose the concrete skeleton of the building. Then, starting Thursday, the crews will gut more of the interior, including the stands. G. Rollie White will then be collapsed upon itself Monday, Wallace said.
"They want it to fall inward," Wallace said.
He expects the structure to be removed by Sept. 13.

Mayor Rahm Emanuels handpicked school team was so concerned about the structural integrity of a Pilsen school fieldhouse and in such a rush to tear it down they didnt even wait to get a demolition permit, City Hall disclosed Monday.
Meanwhile, Whittier Elementary School parents and community members continued fund raising to offset legal fees of protesters arrested trying to stop Saturdays demolition, and begin a new battle to replace their La Casita Community Center.
City officials said Monday it was an administrative order rather than a demolition permit that was issued to the Chicago Public Schools by the citys Department of Buildings on Friday, paving the way for razing of the fieldhouse.
An administrative order allows buildings to be demolished on an emergency basis without a demolition permit, according to mayoral spokesman Bill McCaffrey.
The order was issued after the Department of Buildings reviewed the architects/structural engineers report that deemed the building was unsafe to occupy and a hazard to the community, McCaffrey wrote in an email to the Chicago Sun-Times.
According to the report, the building is in a very advanced state of deterioration. The envelope has failed and the substrate is deteriorating. Some structural members have actually failed and other structural members are being deteriorated by the failure of the building envelope. The building is not safe for occupancy.
