Berkley officials are set to review bid proposals next Wednesday for the demolition of the old, dilapidated town office building.
The town plans to build a new $3.5 million Berkley Town Hall, which will be built in the place of the partially condemned Berkley Town Offices.
Paul Modlowski, executive secretary for the town of Berkley, said that town employees took away accessory buildings and other fixtures around the old town offices, clearing way for demolition.
Modlowski said the town hopes that the demolition is done very quickly after the contract is awarded.
Once land is flattened out we will be doing construction documents and plans and everything for the building, Modlowski said.
The town has not received any bids yet, Modlowski said. The towns initial estimate was that it would cost around $130,000, he said. The town started accepting bids last week. But Modlowski said he believes that several bids will be coming in just before the deadline on Wednesday.
After that its sooner the better to get demolition started, Modlowski said.
Modlowski added that seven contractors took a tour of the run-down building to see what hazardous materials they have to dispose of, namely asbestos.
Modlowski said that actual construction on the new building is expected to begin in March after a contractor is selected.
