Demolition of Sandy Hook underway - October 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Heavy machinery clawed at the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday, reducing walls of painful memories to a pile of rubble.

Under heavy guard and a shroud of secrecy, work crews began the grim task of razing the Newtown, Conn., school 10 months after a murderers rampage killed 20 first-graders and six teachers last December.

The grounds are surrounded by No Trespassing signs and patrolled by security guards.

Contractors have signed confidentiality agreements, promising not to snap photos or talk about the demolition on social media.

Workers surrendered their cellphones at the start of the day.

To further ensure that ghouls dont make off with souvenirs, the glass and bricks from the school will be pulverized, steel will be melted down and debris will be carted off and buried at a secret location.

We have people showing up here every day who want to see the school, said Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra. We are not a tourist attraction or a large city. We are a small town of 28,000 that just wants to be left alone to heal.

Some bricks will be recycled, and some of the dust will be used to construct a driveway and approach to a new school.

The process of demolition is incremental, staged precisely, and executed carefully, said Llodra.

Demolition At Sandy Hook Elementary School Under Way - October 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) A physical sign of one of the nations greatest tragedies is being erased.

Demolition crews are leveling Sandy Hook Elementary School where 20 children and six adults were killed last December.

Trucks arriving to pick up debris from the partially demolished building were being met by uniformed guards at the gate leading up to the school Friday.

The project is hidden behind a wall of security and no trespassing signs are everywhere, CBS 2s Lou Young reported, but from the air you can see demolition is well under way.

Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra issued a statement saying the demolition process will take many weeks.

The process of demolition is incremental, staged precisely and executed carefully, she said. There is no wrecking ball action; it is rather a piece-by-piece, section-by-section removal.

The fate of the 57-year-old building was decided by a 28-member task force of elected officials following a series of public hearings.

The decision was made not only to demolish the school, but to pulverize the debris. The town wants no grim mementos to survive, Young reported.

Workers on the project have also been required to sign confidentiality agreements.

Newtown is using a $50 million state grant to build a replacement structure on the property. The new school is expected to begin accepting students in about three years.

Demolition Approved - October 25, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The East Williston Village Board of Trustees approved the demolition of the controversial 8 Sumter Avenue property on Wednesday Oct. 16, awarding the contract to J. Galvin Construction Incorporated for $28,500.

Should the board not receive a confirmation in writing that certain miscellaneous items, which a list has been devised, will be included in the demolition, a contract will be awarded to Amport Design and Construction for $61,653. Both companies submitted bids for the job last month.

Referring to the $33,153 difference in the two bids, Mayor David Tanner said that subsequent to conversations and clarifications, they seem to be comparable in terms of the scope of work provided. A provision on part of the bid by J

Galvin Construction is that if hazardous materials are found on the site, extra costs may be incurred.

Village Attorney Jeffrey Blinkoff also to the approved resolution that any money that is currently owed on the property that has not been recouped be transferred to the tax rolls, any further costs related to demolition be sent to the property owner, John Muzio, and upon their failure to pay, that money will be transferred to the tax rolls.

Demolition begins on Sandy Hook Elementary School building - October 25, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Workers have begun demolishing the elementary school building where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults, the town's top elected leader said Thursday.

Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra said small-scale demolition is underway at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the project will take several weeks.

"The process of demolition is incremental, staged precisely and executed carefully," she said. "There is no wrecking ball action; it is rather a piece-by-piece, section-by-section removal."

The gunman killed his mother at their home before going to the school on Dec. 14. He committed suicide as police arrived.

A task force of 28 Newtown elected officials voted unanimously in May to raze the Sandy Hook Elementary School and build a new one on the property where the existing school is located.

Newtown has accepted a $50 million state grant for the project, and a new school is expected to open by December 2016. Students have been attending classes in a neighboring town.

Contractors are being asked to destroy materials to eliminate nearly every trace of the building, an effort Llodra has said is intended to protect the victims' privacy and keep people from taking parts of the building as souvenirs. Contractors also are required to sign confidentiality agreements to forbid public discussion of the site and the building.

With hopes of reviving downtown Gettysburg, plans for redevelopment on North Stratton Street are back in motion a decade after they started.

    Almost.

Adams County Industrial Development Authority officials were hoping to demolish the 108 N. Stratton St. buildings next week, but they need to wait for hazardous materials to be cleaned out of the three buildings first, said Robin Fitzpatrick, president of Adams County Industrial Development Authority.

But that didn't stop Adams County Industrial Development Authority officials clutching their shovels and sledgehammers to pose in front of the buildings at a ground-breaking event Thursday morning.

The authority is beginning the first stages of demolition and redevelopment of the blighted property in downtown Gettysburg located off of 108 North Stratton Street. (Shane Dunlap The Evening Sun)

"We knew something needed to be done with it," said Kaycee Kemper of Adams County Economic Development Corp. "The buildings became an eyesore."
