Judge gives Nineteenth Century Club postponed 15-day reprieve from demolition - October 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

(WMC-TV) - The Nineteenth Century Club may have another chance at dodging demolition as of Wednesday.

A judge gave preservationists 15 days to put up a $50,000 bond. That would put a total pot of $100,000 in place if a new buyer fails to step forward.

Before court Wednesday, preservationists learned a buyer, who wanted to preserve the Nineteenth Century Club mansion, did not put a down payment on the deal.

"The investor in Nashville decided he hadn't had enough time to do due diligence, and so he pretty much pulled the financing," said June West with Memphis Heritage.

The Union Group wants to turn the site into a strip mall, but the project is on hold until the outcome of the case. The plaintiff's attorney argued most costs would have occurred despite the delay caused by the trial.

"Few of the expenses, if any, have been affected by any delay," said attorney Steve Mulroy.

The Nineteenth Century Club attorney says damages are mounting.

"Nobody if any means in this community has stepped forward," said attorney Art Quinn.

The judge then ruled the plaintiffs must pay a $50,000 bond by November 1 or he would allow the demolition.

Meanwhile, the plaintiffs already filed an appeal with The Appellate Court.

Demolition of Telford Bus Station is halted - October 18, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition plans for Telford Bus Station have been halted after an outcry from a bus firm, politicians and user groups.

The depot was set to be bulldozed and replaced by six stops along the Box Road as part of the 200m development to transform Telford Town Centre.

But planners, who approved the largest proposal in a decade, last night put a legal injuction in place to stop any work on the bus station until an alternative has been agreed.

Original leisure, retail and nightspot plans within the Box Road and Central Southwater show applicant Telford Trustees preferred option of an on road bus interchange.

But the council was inundated with objections, including from bus firm Arriva, which branded the suggestion of demolishing the station unacceptable.

Church Aston Parish Council wrote to the council saying it could forsee difficulties for the those who rely on public transport.

Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard and Telford & Wrekin Bus User Group also contacted the authority to criticise the plan.

Speaking at last nights meeting of Telford & Wrekin Councils planning committee, Councillors Ian Fletcher and Nigel Dugmore warned scrapping the bus and coach station could leave passengers dodging traffic and abstained from voting on the application.

In a report to members, planning officer Gareth Thomas said: It is argued that spreading the bus station across four legs of the Box Road will promote linked trips, create footfall on the urban boulevards, will provide the opportunity for bus expansion, including longer buses.

But the on street facility has not been welcomed by either the councils public transport team or Arriva.

Demolition work has started on the Hartford pub that was destroyed by fire earlier this year with plans that it will reopen next summer.

The fire at Hartford Mill broke out in the early hours of August 8 and was spotted by overnight cleaner Keith Hill, who roused the sleeping residents.

Nine people, including general manager Colin Woodcock, 61, and his wife Kim, 49, escaped from the pub unharmed.

More than 40 firefighters from eight crews joined together to battle the blaze using jets, light portable pumps and an aerial appliance.

After four hours the fire was extinguished but the pub, living quarters and the roof of the building were destroyed.

Although the function room was saved, it suffered substantial smoke damage.

Demolition On Hold For Manchester Building Gutted By Fire - October 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANCHESTER Demolition of a fire-gutted Main Street building is on hold until town and insurance company officials complete discussions about salvage, debris removal, site remediation and other issues.

Town administrators met Tuesday morning with insurance company representatives about 801-809 Main St., Fire Chief Robert Bycholski wrote in a news release. There was no resolution of the various issues at the meeting, he said.

Issues of insurance carrier responsibility and assignment of a site remediation contractor have not yet been resolved, the chief wrote in a later news release late Tuesday afternoon.

Another meeting has been scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Bycholski wrote.

The 1905, brick-sided building was destroyed when a fire started in the basement Saturday night. The blaze was not suspicious, Bycholski has said, but no cause has been determined. No one was hurt, but residents of a rooming house in that building and apartments in adjacent buildings were displaced.

The delay in demolition involves communication among separate insurance carriers for the building owner and the two businesses that occupied the building Great Harvest Bread Co. and Connecticut Valley Coin, Assistant Fire Chief David Billings said.

Demolition to begin at MacArthur Elementary - October 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

After Tropical Storm Lee in 2011, MacArthur Elementary School was left severely damaged. As YNN's Carmella Mataloni reports, demolition at the school officially started on Tuesday.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Demolition at MacArthur Elementary officially started on Tuesday. A crowd of current district officials and retired faculty members were on hand to watch the next phase of the reconstruction project begin.

Although it was a bittersweet moment for many, the demolition means the rebuilding is moving forward. The demolition phase is expected to be completed by December.

The entire project for the new school will cost $77 million. However, more than 96 percent of the cost will be covered by state and federal funding. The funding will cover demolition, removal, and new construction.

Before the demolition started, many people spoke about their memories at the school.

"So many people here are students, parents and people in our community, share those memories so people don't forget about this wonderful building," said Sherry Laskowski, a former third grade teacher and parent.

Once demolition is completed, construction will begin in January. The entire project is expected to be complete by fall 2015.

Newtown demolition: Officials want to eliminate any trace of Sandy Hook - October 16, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The demolition of Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School will be unusually thorough, say officials, to ensure no part of the school is sold for mementos of the tragic shooting. Most of the building will be completely crushed and hauled away to an undisclosed location.

When the old Sandy Hook Elementary School is demolished, building materials will be pulverized on site and metal will be taken away and melted down in an effort to eliminate nearly every trace of the building where a gunman killed 26 people last December.

Contractors also will be required to sign confidentiality agreements and workers will guard the property's perimeter to prevent onlookers from taking photographs or videos.

The goal is to prevent exploitation of any remnants of the building, Newtown First Selectman E. Patricia Llodra said Tuesday.

"We want to be absolutely certain to do everything we can to protect the privacy of the families and the Sandy Hook community," she said. "We're going to every possible length to eliminate any possibility that any artifacts from the building would be taken from the campus and ... end up on eBay."

Demolition is set to begin next week and be finished before the Dec. 14 anniversary of the shootings. Town voters last month accepted a state grant of $49.3 million to raze the building and build a new school, which is expected to open by December 2016.

The contractors' confidentiality agreements, which were first reported Monday by The News-Times of Danbury, forbid public discussion of the site as well as photographs or disclosure of any information about the building.

Llodra, the superintendent of schools and other town officials have been discussing how to handle the demolition for weeks. Llodra said they want to shield the victims' families and the community from more trauma, and don't want any part of the school used for personal gain.
