China residents drink pesticide to protest demolition of homes - December 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

BEIJING A dozen residents of a central Chinese city protested the demolition of their homes by drinking pesticide in Beijing in a desperate bid for attention that underscores the failures of a decades-old petitioning system.

The 12 survived the protest Tuesday near a historic watchtower in the heart of China's capital after police sent them to a hospital, where they were being treated Wednesday for poisoning, said Wang Yuping, one of the residents.

Chinese petitioners sometimes are driven to extreme measures as their frustration boils over after years of unresolved grievances and routine beatings by local authorities.

Wang, 40, and the others had traveled to Beijing from a district in Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei province, to draw attention to their complaints. Wang described the protest as a group suicide attempt.

"We have been petitioning for so many years, but either we have been dragged back home or locked in secret jails and beaten, and no one has been willing to help us," Wang said by telephone. "We felt like there was no hope left."

Each petitioner drank about 50 milliliters (1.7 ounces) of pesticide, Wang said, then lay down on the ground until police bundled them into vehicles and drove them to a hospital.

"I felt dizzy and nauseous," he said from a hospital in the southwestern Fengtai district.

Wang said the petitioners have been unsuccessfully seeking redress since 2010 for the razing of their homes by local authorities who provided little or no compensation.

Local government and police offices in Wuhan could not be reached by phone.

Every year in China, millions of complaints are filed about what petitioners see as injustice or incompetence by local officials in issues such as land expropriation, forced home demolitions and labor disputes, or the failure of local authorities to prosecute crimes.

Demolition of illegal cottages in Kochi put on hold - December 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Revenue officials are planning to slap a show-cause notice on the management of Vaamika Resorts at Panavally for failing to demolish the illegal structures erected on Vettila Thuruthu Island in Vembanad Lake.

The Supreme Court had earlier ordered that the unauthorised structures in the resort should be pulled down. The court had also dismissed a Special Leave Petition filed by the resort owners.

Though the resort management was asked to demolish the illegal structures, which included two fully completed buildings and a partially constructed one, they have not complied with the order. The demolition was stopped halfway, said M. Sundaran Achari, Thahasildar, Cherthala.

One month has passed since the deadline for the order for knocking down the structure was issued and hence the legal action.

The Village officer of Panavally was directed to issue a show-cause notice, he said.

Earlier, the panchayat authorities had shared information and pictures of demolition drive with the Revenue officials.

A team of officials led by the Alappuzha District Collector was expected to visit the site to confirm that the court order regarding the demolition was implemented in full, an official said.

At the same time, the resort authorities maintained that the demolition was stopped halfway following a direction from some officials regarding the disposal of debris.

An official had directed that structure could be razed down only after making elaborate arrangements for the management of debris. The Revenue officials were informed about the developments, said the manager of the resort. The resort authorities also maintained that they lacked the expertise for the management of debris from the demolition of the buildings structures

The officials are awaiting an order from the Chief Secretary for implementing the Kerala High Court order to pull down the illegal cottages constructed by Kapico Kerala Resorts on Nediathuruthu in Vembanad Lake. The court had ordered that the villas constructed in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone notification be razed. As the demolition requires expertise and money, which are beyond the means of the district administration, it requires a government order for raising the resources.

Demolition begins on West High School - December 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WEST -

Demolition has begun on the West High School as the semester comes to a close.

Construction crews started demolishing the West High School Wednesday morning. The school suffered severe structural damage after the April 17th explosion. It lies just a few hundred hours from the blast site.

Crews were going to start Tuesday, but it was delayed due to weather. Now that it has started, teachers and faculty say it was very emotional seeing it torn down.

"Well it's sad just for the whole High School, lots of memories," West art teacher Diana Whiteley said. "We had a great time."

Whiteley's room and office were one of the first sections to be demolished Wednesday. She fought back tears as she recalled the memories of the building she spent six years working.

"We had a great time, it was a great facility, something that everyone was very proud of," Whiteley said.

Students also fought back tears remembering the times at the old high school. Junior Holly Soukup says she made a lot of good memories, specifically in the cafeteria.

"We're going to cry, we have so many memories made in that building and just thinking about it now I'm stopping my tears, Soukup said. "To see those memories demolished, it's like a part of us is missing."

Senior Jackson Kucera says his last memory of the building is having a water balloon fight the day of the explosion.

Demolition guidelines addressed at downtown design meeting - December 12, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

By MIKE KRAFCIK 6 News Reporter

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -Breathing new life into downtown Knoxville also means a balancing act - since it's home to so much history.

Sometimes those two ideas can leave people at odds over what's best for a project or a piece of property.

On Wednesday, the Downtown Design Review Board met to consider an amendment that addresses the demolition of buildings.

The proposed language would mandate that owners who demolish buildings should ensure that the remaining site is covered with vegetation and that fencing should be installed around vacant lots, including decorative fencing along sidewalks.

"It really doesn't do much to remove blight influences that vacant lots have in urban areas. That's a big component, but it's also a big stumbling block on how to implement that right now," said Mike Reynolds, Downtown Design Review board member.

Reynolds says issues were discussed at the meeting because he believes the board's role in the demolition process is vague and needs clarification.

A decision by St. John's Cathedral to demolish two buildings in the fall on Walnut Street sparked controversy.

Recently, the owners of the Pryor Brown Garage wanted to demolish that building and create surface parking until they could develop the site, but the Metropolitan Planning Commission denied a necessary rezoning request.

Attorneys for Pryor Brown on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against city council because the body did not vote on the appeal.

Photos: Demolition continues at 466 Springfield Ave., Summit … - December 9, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

SUMMIT On Oct. 1, preparations were made for the demolition of 466 and 467 Springfield Ave. At that time, Mark Yeager, the president of MRY Associates, said the demolition process would last through Nov. 18. That day is next Monday and, as of late Tuesday afternoon, the two large buildings at the back of the property were still standing.

Yager and the construction company are still waiting for NJ Transit to issue a permit to bring down those buildings. NJ Transit tracks run directly behind the two buildings and at least one of the tracks will have to be closed during demolition. The plan was to do the demolition on the weekend, at night.

It looked like there was a conference in progress Tuesday at the site, as a number of men talked together and pointed towards the work. Asked if he knew when the back buildings would be brought down, one of the men said, no but it should be soon. The men walked away, around the corner and continued their discussion.

It will have to be soon, because the detour to the Tier Garage is due to be suspended during November and December, according to a post on the citys website. Currently drivers can only enter the garage from Maple Avenue and leave the garage from Springfield Avenue.

There are lights on the site, which conforms to previous information that work would be taking place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The buildings will be removed to make room for a 35,000 -square-foot building that will have retail space on the ground floor and offices on the top three floors.
