CHR sees human rights violations in recent QC demolition - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Informal settlers, cops clash in QC demolition. Informal settlers clash with anti-riot policemen during a demolition of shanties at Sitio San Roque along Agham Road in Quezon City on Monday, January 27. GMA News

Interviewed by GMA News Online on Tuesday, Director Gilbert Boiser of CHR-National Capital Region said TV reports on the demolition showed footage of people being assaulted.

I would surmise na merong violation. Base sa footage na nakita namin meron talaga [kasi] may mga binugbog, he said.

Twenty-nine people were hurt while nine were arrested during the sporadic clashes that lasted for seven hours between residents of the shanties and members of the Quezon City Police District.

A two-month-old infant, Baby Cyril, was rushed to a hospital after she inhaled tear gas used by the police against the residents of Sitio San Roque in Brgy. Pag-asa. The residents were accused of using pillbox, Molotov bombs and rocks against the demolition squad.

According to Boiser, rights to housing and to human dignity may be some of the rights violated during the demolition.

Wala pa kaming report because the investigation is ongoing, he said.

    Target

Authorities target to demolish some 250 shanties by Friday, said Voltaire Alcantara, head of the demolition team, in a separate phone interview by GMA News Online. Most of the shanties house about two to four families.

Alcantara said houses located 11.3 meters from the roadside are the only ones up for demolition to pave way for a road-widening project in the area.

Pa demands justice for 2-month-old baby hurt in North Triangle demolition - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The January 27 demolition of homes of the urban poor in the North Triangle was the most overkill in the number of police forces deployed, teargas fired and high-powered rifles displayed. CTUHR

MANILA Dennis Suarez, 28, is demanding justice for the danger his two-month-old daughter had to go through when she suffocated from the teargas fired by the police during the demolition in North Triangle yesterday, Jan. 27.

I demand justice for my baby, justice for the livelihoods they destroyed and for our homes they demolished. We were not informed that something like this would happen, Suarez told Bulatlat.com.

On Jan. 27, around 1,000 police, members of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and demolition team arrived in North Triangle in Quezon City to demolish homes to give way to the 11.3-road widening project along Agham Road.

Using the heaviest force since their first attempt to demolish the urban poor homes, the police broke their way into lines of resisting residents from 9:30 a.m., proceeding with the demolition of homes once they got through, and then restarting the use of force on the residents at 12:30 high noon. Residents fought the canisters of tear gas and warning shots fired by the police with stones and bottles.

Tadeo Palma, secretary to the Office of the Mayor, said in a Manila Standard Today report that about 81 houses were demolished yesterday, Jan. 27. About 100 more are expected to be removed.

    Children not spared

Suarez said he brought his baby to a cousins house as their home was threatened with demolition. But the canister of teargas thrown by his cousins house suffocated his baby who was then sleeping in his cousins bedroom.

Rotting clothes removed from Mann’s site - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEMOLITION workers dont often have to wear breathing apparatus but they would have appreciated them when they uncovered burnt clothing in the Manns building last week.

Piles of clothes on the ground and handbags and shoes on racks were blackened from a fire that tore through the shop in the Manns building on High Street four years ago.

The building is being dismantled to develop the Manns Centre and site manager Clint Burgmann said the clothing smelled putrid.

Im guessing the fire brigades would have hosed them all down and they have stayed there just rotting, he said.

I think the smell will last in my nose longer than time itself.

It was believed the 2010 fire started in the roof of an apartment behind the Manns building before spreading to the discount clothing shop.

Mr Burgmann said he was unsure why the clothes were not removed at the time.

Workers cleared the clothing out on Thursday and Friday and disposed of it in landfill.

Demolition of shanties turns Agham Road into battle zone - January 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Jeannette I. Andrade Philippine Daily Inquirer

Agham Road in Quezon City once again became a virtual battleground after informal settlers on a lot owned by the National Housing Authority (NHA) rained bottles, rocks and pillboxes on demolition teams and antiriot policemen Monday morning.

Eleven residents were later arrested by lawmen after they reportedly destroyed a patrol car assigned to the Quezon City Police Districts Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU).

During investigation, however, it was discovered that two of those arrested did not even live in the area but were from Barangay 128 in Caloocan City.

Before the clash between personnel of the QCPD Civil Disturbance Management (CDM) unit and residents of the disputed property in Sitio San Roque, Barangay Bagong Pag-asa, the latter had started setting up barricades and making weapons, including plastic bags containing human waste, as early as 5 a.m.

When five trucks ferrying members of the demolition team from the citys Task Force for the Control, Prevention and Removal of Illegal Structures and Squatting and antiriot policemen arrived at 9 a.m. to tear down around 120 shanties, trouble broke out.

PDP gov aspirant, Ogun differ on campign office demolition - January 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A governorship aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Kayode Amusan, has alleged that the demolition of the perimeter fence of his campaign office in Abeokuta on Monday was politically motivated.

Amusan, a former House of Representatives member, said this in his reaction to the pulling down of the fence of his campaign office by officials of the state Bureau of Urban and Physical Planning in Abeokuta.

Mondays demolition was the second time such an exercise would be carried out on the structure. The first one was done in 2014.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu, however argued that the structure was demolished because it contravened the law.

A team of BUPP officials had at about 10.20am stormed the PDP aspirants campaign office, situated along Oba Gbadebo Road, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, in a vehicle marked OG 06 836, and pulled down the structure.

They were said to have declared that the structure was not approved.

Amusan, however, told newsmen on the telephone that the BUPP did not have the right to carry out such demolition.

He added that he bought the building from the Federal Ministry of Housing.

The PDP aspirant claimed that the erection of the perimeter fence became necessary due to the dumping of fetish objects in the premises by some unknown persons.

Amusan insisted that the demolition of the structure was part of the strategy by the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state to intimidate him out of the 2015 governorship election.

The new wave of demolitions along Agham Road in Sitio San Roque, Quezon City, wreaks of violence and wanton disrespect for basic human rights. From the looks of it, not even an iota of humanity was present during the demolition. Kabataan Rep. Terry Ridon

By JANESS ANN J. ELLAO Bulatlat.com

MANILA Homes of residents of an urban poor community in North Triangle were demolished today, Jan. 27, 2014, to supposedly give way to the 11.3 meter road widening project along Agham Road in Quezon City.

At around 6:00 a.m., around 1,000 police, members of SWAT and a demolition team arrived in North Triangle. In response, residents barricaded their homes.

The first wave of demolition took place at around 9:30 a.m., where some 40 to 50 houses, according to Kadamay-San Roque, were demolished.

A clash between the police and residents erupted again at around 12:30 p.m. The police fired tear gas canisters. Residents, for their part, retaliated with stones and bottles in their effort to save their homes from demolition.
