Demolition of the Brincks and Deluxe buildings could begin within days, bringing a long and sometimes bitter saga over their fate to an end.
Chief Executive Matt Vincent is asking Butte-Silver Bow commissioners to sign off on a demolition plan that could cost about $58,000. If the council OKs the use of a private contractor for part of the work at its meeting Wednesday, demolition could begin the week of Feb. 24.
The council voted in October to have the crumbling buildings torn down, despite pleas by some residents to save them because they were historic structures at an entry point to Buttes famed Uptown at Front and Utah streets.
The Brincks building was built in 1888 and the fate of it and the adjacent Deluxe building have been points of contention since 2009. They share a common wall.
Under the demolition plan, a private company would be paid up to $13,800 to provide a spotter and a crane capable of reaching the top portion of the buildings at 28 feet high.
The countys equipment reaches only 22 feet high, so the private one will be used to remove the top 10 feet of the buildings.
That will allow us to be safe about it for the public and for the adjacent business owners and will allow us to salvage some historic pieces off the building such as the cast-iron cornices and the name blocks, Vincent said.
After the top portions are removed, county crews would do the rest of the demolition and hauling work.
A private firm could be paid up to $10,000 for asbestos removal, but Vincent said an employee with the countys Public Works Department has recently been certified in asbestos abatement and could help, so that cost could be cut in half.
Other costs have been penciled in for plywood and fuel for an excavator and loader and five trucks that would be used to haul material away. Fuel costs alone could top $23,000.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Its a milestone week in the demolition of the Metrodome, with crews starting to knock holes in the exterior walls, starting with the northeast corner.
Its a rugged yet meticulous process, bringing down a stadium that used to have the nickname Thunder Dome. Now, all the decibels are coming from heavy machinery, smashing steel and concrete, section by section.
Allen Troshinsky is Director of Operations for Mortenson Constructions sports group.
As the weeks progress, he said, youll see coming out of that northeast corner, the hole in the building opening up and working its way in two directions both clockwise and counter-clockwise.
Blowing up the stadium with explosives would have caused too much dust and vibration to other downtown buildings, so crews are using a wrecking ball and a high reach excavating machine with a muncher attachment, which severs the structure.
Theyll go in and strategically make structural cuts in the concrete or the steel, said Troshinksy, and cause elements to collapse.
Crews took all the seats out of the Metrodome weeks ago. And now, 90 percent of whats left is going off to reclaiming and recycling facilities.
Scrap steel is recycled into new steel and that could go into possibly new construction, Troshinksy said.

The Town Council granted an appeal Wednesday from David Frisbie, who objected to the Architectural Commissions decision last month to defer a demolition request for his property at 225 Indian Road.
I think ARCOM is stepping out of line, Council President Robert Wildrick said. They dont have that right. They need to follow the law.
The commission deferred demolition of the existing two-story house Jan. 22, noting its beauty and how it fit into the neighborhood. Members also were concerned about the status of a property line alteration between the house at 225 and the familys adjacent parcel 219 Indian Road, and the anticipated large size of the new home, which has not been decided.
Frisbies attorney Maura Ziska said the house is not landmarked and the commission had no legal ground for deferring the demolition. Denying the demolition has put her client behind schedule, she said.
Town attorney John Randolph said Ziska is right. The ARCOM code is very specific that demolition shall be granted unless the house is designated a landmark or on a list for possible landmarking, he said.
Im in agreement that ARCOM does not have the ability to deny a request for demolition in this particular case.
Planning, Zoning & Building Director John Page noted demolition requests were an issue at the December and January meetings.
In each instance, there was reluctance to approve destruction of homes that individual members believe fit nicely into the collective culture of Palm Beach, Page wrote in a memo to the council.
Wildrick does not agree with the commissions logic.
Theres a political feeling on ARCOM that they want to have total control of demolition and dont want to do it from an administrative standpoint, he said. I dont think its fair to have a landowner go to more expense, spend more time because of some intramural problems on ARCOM. Its not being properly handled.
