Demolition plan set for Butte's Brincks, Deluxe - February 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of the Brincks and Deluxe buildings could begin within days, bringing a long and sometimes bitter saga over their fate to an end.

Chief Executive Matt Vincent is asking Butte-Silver Bow commissioners to sign off on a demolition plan that could cost about $58,000. If the council OKs the use of a private contractor for part of the work at its meeting Wednesday, demolition could begin the week of Feb. 24.

The council voted in October to have the crumbling buildings torn down, despite pleas by some residents to save them because they were historic structures at an entry point to Buttes famed Uptown at Front and Utah streets.

The Brincks building was built in 1888 and the fate of it and the adjacent Deluxe building have been points of contention since 2009. They share a common wall.

Under the demolition plan, a private company would be paid up to $13,800 to provide a spotter and a crane capable of reaching the top portion of the buildings at 28 feet high.

The countys equipment reaches only 22 feet high, so the private one will be used to remove the top 10 feet of the buildings.

That will allow us to be safe about it for the public and for the adjacent business owners and will allow us to salvage some historic pieces off the building such as the cast-iron cornices and the name blocks, Vincent said.

After the top portions are removed, county crews would do the rest of the demolition and hauling work.

A private firm could be paid up to $10,000 for asbestos removal, but Vincent said an employee with the countys Public Works Department has recently been certified in asbestos abatement and could help, so that cost could be cut in half.

Other costs have been penciled in for plywood and fuel for an excavator and loader and five trucks that would be used to haul material away. Fuel costs alone could top $23,000.

'Demolition Man' Renzi's next fight: Berlusconi - February 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Renzi - currently still mayor of Florence and known as the "demolition man" - ousted his Democratic Party (PD) colleague late Thursday after he called for "radical change" in an economically stagnant and politically unstable Italy.

"If we don't take risks and we don't take responsibility now, the slow pace of reform, without a strong push on our behalf, could result in losing our economic competitiveness," Renzi said at Thursday's party meeting.

(Read More: Italy's Letta to submit resignation Friday)

President Napolitano said Friday that he would complete consultations with the center-left PD party officers by Saturday and is expected to give a mandate to Renzi to form a new government. If Renzi accepts, he will then face a confidence vote in both chambers of the Italian parliament.

"The takeover of Renzi is likely to be seen by the market as a moderately positive event as it would increase the likelihood of an acceleration of the reform process in Italy," Fabio Fois and Giuseppe Maraffino, two analysts at Barclays said in a research note on Thursday evening.

Renzi is seen as the brash, young leader that could seek and gain tougher reforms. He has called for political measures designed to enhance growth and job creation and streamline the bureaucracy and judiciary system. On Thursday, he stated that any new government should deliver structural and institutional reforms, which would include changing the voting system and amending the constitution.

Italy, the third-largest economy in the 18-country euro zone after Germany and France, has been struggling to get its finances in order. The country's debt as a proportion of its gross domestic product was 127 percent in 2012, according to European statistics database Eurostat. The only other euro zone country with a higher debt level is Greece at 159 percent. The country's unemployment rate remains stubbornly high at 12.7 percent.

Economists at UniCredit, Chiara Corsa and Loredana Federico, believe that the President will move rapidly to give Renzi his mandate and suggest that the PD Party leader has already been in talks with the political parties of the coalition which had previously supported Letta.

They expect Renzi to have between 170-175 votes in the Senate, with an absolute majority needed of only 161 seats out of 321.

Demolition of old Margaritaville site going smoothly - February 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The sound of jack hammers and a wrecking ball now echo across the site of the old Margaritaville casino project. Grand Casino Biloxi is clearing that property to make way for a new entertainment venue.

Many folks considered that abandoned construction site one of the biggest eyesores on the coast, but it is coming down now rather quickly. In fact, the demolition team should have the site cleared by sometime this summer.

Demolition must certainly be easier than construction. At least it appears that way with a 10,000 pound wrecking ball, giant jackhammers and powerful track hoes doing the work.

"Drop a wrecking ball and separate the concrete from the rebar," said Jason Wold with Yates Construction as he explained the process.

"At that point, we bring in smaller equipment to jackhammer the bottom of the columns, which we're going to salvage and give to DMR so they can add on to their Katrina reef."

Not only will 500 concrete columns be re-purposed by helping expand the nearby fishing reef south of Deer Island, but tons of concrete and steel from the tear down will also be re-used.

"The concrete will be recycled, broken up into smaller pieces and be used in other projects. The steel will be recycled for future steel fabrication."

The demolition began last month. About a dozen workers and ten pieces of equipment are staying busy taking down the old eyesore.

"I would guesstimate that we're going to be in the 12,000 to 15,000 cubic yards of concrete that will be hauled off and 500 columns that will be donated to the Department of Marine Resources."
