Demolition of Flora school house nearly complete - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Austin Miller Updated: Friday, March 28, 2014, 6:10 pm Published: Friday, March 28, 2014, 4:11 pm Related Content

FLORA, Ind. (WLFI) Demolition is underway as Flora residents say goodbye to an old school house. Crews are about half-way through demolishing the old building.

Monroe Township School was first built in the 1930s to replace a school that had burned down previously. The building has not been used in nearly 30 years and was beginning to become hazardous to neighboring residents.

Flora Town Council President Josh Ayres said he is sad to see the building go.

Some people are pretty emotional about it. Its been a landmark since 1930. Ive heard some talk. Everybodys sad to see it go, but understands that it cant stay the way it is forever, said Ayres.

Demolition is expected to be complete within the next month. Ayres said there are no plans currently to construct anything on the land.

Theres actually an older school buried underneath this one, so we really cant do something with it as far as building something on top of it unless that problem is taken care of, said Ayres.

Ayres said it will be up to the community to decide what to do with the property.

Demolition begins on Blue Springs water tower - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    BLUE SPRINGS, MO (KCTV) -

It is demolition day for a downtown Blue Springs water tower.

Don't expect any big booms or explosions to take down the 300,000-gallon water tower. Instead, it will be torn down piece by piece starting Friday morning.

The pieces are heavy, ranging from 2,000 to 9,000 pounds. During the demolition, a large crane will lift them from high above down to the ground.

"It is going to be a big deal. I think there are going to be a lot of people out watching," said Cindy Miller, president of Blue Springs Downtown Alive.

Iseler Demolition Inc., a company that specializes in water tower demolition, will get to work Friday morning. They've deconstructed hundreds of water towers around the country. Click here and here to see a timelapse of a similar demolition.

"Some people bring in a huge crane and pickup the whole tank in one section. We don't do that. We simply piece it out basically the opposite way it was put together," said Douglas Iseler, owner of Iseler Demolition Inc.

Some Blue Springs residents are sad to see the staple disappear from the skyline. It has been a directional marker for many in town.

"I know it has been here for a very long time. There are a lot of people who are really enthusiastic about the water tower," Miller said.

The tower is coming down to make room for renovations to the Howard L. Brown Public Safety Building that will hold the police department.

Sheriff faces 2 cases over Apas demolition - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COURT sheriff Edilberto Suarin is facing two cases for alleged violations of the urban poor law during the implementation of a court-ordered demolition at Sitio San Miguel, Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

The first is a criminal case filed by Leo Dioquino yesterday before the Office of the Ombudsman. He is one of the 157 families affected by the demolition at San Miguel.

In a copy of his complaint affidavit, Dioquino said Suarin violated Republic Act 7279, otherwise known as the Urban Housing and Development Act (Udha) after he hired a minor as part of the demolition team.

Worse, Dioquino said the minor robbed them and stole their blower, electric hair iron, electric meter, electric wire and a radio.

This act by sheriff Suarin of hiring a minor to be part of the demolition team is very reprehensible and in breach of the duties deposed on him as agent of the law, he said.

Also, Dioquino said the people who composed the demolition team were not properly identified as some were wearing masks and they have no identification cards.

This, he said, is a violation of Section 28 of RA 7279, which provides that there should be proper identification of all persons taking part in a demolition.

Aside from this, Dioquino said he was not able to receive a notice from the sheriff that their house will already be demolished.

Section 28, he said, further provides that notice should be given to the affected families 30 days prior to the date of eviction or demolition.

It is undisputed that the provision (of the law) is intended as a safeguard to protect the underprivileged and homeless citizens like us. And these requirements are not empty gestures. In fact, the tenor of the provision indicates that such requirements are of mandatory character.
