The 1950 demolition of Frank Lloyd Wrights Larkin Administration Building for a parking lot is widely considered one of the great architectural tragedies of the 20th century.
On Wednesday, across the street, a work crew was seen removing a section of the historic powerhouses brick wall, raising fears among preservationists that another demolition could be under way. Some bricks have been removed.
In response, the Buffalo Preservation Board which hadnt been notified, as required, that the building could be targeted for the wrecking ball is expected today to vote for a public hearing.
In addition, a nomination form to give local landmark status to all of the Larkin Co. buildings, including the powerhouse, as part of the Larkin Historic District will be introduced by Tim Tielman, the executive director of the Campaign for Greater Buffalo History, Architecture & Culture, who is also a member of the city preservation board.
The powerhouse is across Seneca and Larkin streets from the colossal Larkin Center of Commerce, which is partly owned by Peter Krog of Krog Corp.
It is unfortunate and outrageous that a building owner seeking to exploit the historic cachet of the Larkin Co. would destroy part of the nations legacy for a parking lot, Tielman said, believing that to be the owners intention.
A Larkin Historic District would give long overdue, formal recognition and protection to one of Americas most important industrial complexes. It would also offer the maximum protection for the endangered powerhouse, Tielman added.
The Larkin District, dubbed Larkinville, has been considered in recent years to be one of the citys great success stories. More than 1.5 million square feet of historic buildings have been preserved and rehabilitated.
There also have been improvements to the streetscape and addition of green space.
A number of buildings on or near Seneca Street also have recently been sold for housing and office development, capitalizing on the Larkin Districts success.

MANILA Some 100 homes in an urban poor community in Road 10, Tondo, Manila were demolished to give way to a reported road widening program.
The demolition of our homes is illegal because they did not show us any papers that would prove that we have to be evicted, Rocel Berdan, vice president of Samahang Magkakapitbahay sa Road 10, adding, They have no right to deprive us of our rights to housing and livelihood here in our community.
In a previous Bulatlat.com report, Road 10 residents pointed to the privatization of the Manila North Harbor as the culprit behind the demolition of their homes. The port privatization is among the 50 public private partnership programs that the Aquino administration is pushing for.
Anakpawis Partylist earlier said many urban poor communities have been demolished or are threatened to be demolished to give way to public-private partnership projects (PPP).

Thomas Robinette, Chicago-area demolition industry veteran and former president of the National Demolition Association (NDA), was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for the influential role he has played in the evolution of the industry.
Tom has helped lead the industry as its grown into the highly sophisticated discipline it is today, requiring knowledge of safe work practices, engineering, and the latest environmental standards and regulations, said Michael R. Taylor, CAE, Executive Director of the NDA. Taylor presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Robinette recently at the Associations 41st Annual Convention in Las Vegas.
Robinette is president and owner of the national demolition contracting firm Robinette Demolition Inc. in Oakbrook Terrace which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Since founding the firm, he has overseen the completion of more than 12,000 demolition projects, plant dismantlements, interior strip outs, and environmental remediation projects.
Robinette Demolition which is ranked 10th in the nation in revenues among demolition contractors may be familiar to some as the company which contributed its services to a Chicago project featured on the former hit TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The company also completed the interior demolition of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Robinette has served as guest lecturer on the topic of demolition at Purdue University, the first university to offer a specialization in demolition.
Within the NDA, which is the global trade organization representing professionals involved in the demolition process, he worked on numerous committees and eventually held the sequential positions of Secretary, Treasurer, 2nd and 1st Vice President, President and Past President of the Association. We are especially grateful to Tom for the many years hes devoted to the growth of our organization, Taylor noted, while pointing out that Robinette has represented the NDA in Europe, Washington, DC, at OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and the U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).
Locally, Robinette participates on the boards of several charities and has received a Telly Award for excellence in film and video production. He is also active in the Association of Subcontractors and Affiliates, a Chicago-area trade organization, which recognized Robinette Demolitions safety record nine times in 10 years.

The recent swarm of earthquakes in the Los Angeles area is another reminder to local and state governments and agencies responsible for emergency management to include demolition contractors on their disaster response teams, said Jeff Kroeker of Kroeker Inc. in Fresno, CA, and President of the National Demolition Association.
Following both natural and man-made disasters, demolition contractors have provided invaluable assistance to first responders, helping them react more quickly and skillfully to these events, Kroeker said. He pointed out the essential work demolition contractors performed following the 2011 magnitude-6.3 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the disastrous 1994 magnitude-6.7 Northridge quake in Southern California which killed dozens of people and caused $25 billion in damage.
Since Christchurch is New Zealands second largest metropolitan area, the experiences of our members working there could provide some valuable lessons to agencies in earthquake-prone area like Los Angeles, San Francisco and potentially even Seattle, Kroeker said. He and other representatives of the National Demolition Association met last year with experts from the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) to identify ways demolition contractors can strengthen the agencys response to disasters.
Cal EMA has declared April Earthquake Preparedness Month.
At present, its unlikely that the recent magnitude-5.1 and magnitude-4.4 quakes would be precursors to a much larger quake, according to CalTech seismologist Kate Hutton, quoted in a recent article in USA Today, noting that Southern California gets more quakes than any other part of the contiguous United States. Neither of the two larger quakes was on the famed San Andreas Fault.
The fact that these two earthquakes did not cause extensive damage is just another reminder that communities and agencies should prepare their response now, in advance of a major disaster, Kroeker said. This is why the National Demolition Association is determined to alert communities now so that they are prepared, Kroeker said.
Its been the stance of the National Demolition Association that contractors should be pre-qualified by local entities and involved in the planning stages so that response can be immediate, said Michael R. Taylor, CAE, Executive Director of the association. Among the tasks demolition contractors can handle include site clearance to allow access, urban search and rescue, and the re-establishment of the vital infrastructure. Following all life-saving measures, the contractors handle salvage and recycling and structural dismantlement.
The National Demolition Association has prepared a Demolition Contractor Skilled Support Personnel Pre-Qualification Checklist for local and state governments to use to help them prepare more effectively. The survey is found on the associations website under the Industry Topics tab in the Disaster Response section. In addition, a video documenting the damage to the city of Christchurch following its 2011 earthquake is also available for viewing.
A quick find online directory of NDA Members and Associate Members and their specialized skills can be found on the NDA homepage.
