Demolition nears for Georgetown Commons, residents still frustrated - May 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    May 6, 2014 Updated May 6, 2014 at 10:39 PM CDT

WASHINGTON, Ill. -- Demolition could begin soon on the Georgetown Common Apartments in Washington.

Residents fear that means goodbye to all of their belongings.

It's been six months since the tornado destroyed the complex.

Residents have been restricted from accessing the site for safety reasons.

Management released a statement Tuesday, which said serious threats still remain, access is not allowed, and demolition will start soon.

"A lot of people still had stuff that could have made it in these apartments," said former Georgetown resident, Bobbie Colgan. "Where is it all going? Are they just going to demolish it with it, or are people taking it out? They definitely didn't give anyone who had an opportunity enough time to get what they needed out."

A specific demolition date was not provided.

Management said rebuilding the apartments is undecided.

Demolition of a 500,000 dream home a disaster for 'trusting' family - May 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The house in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, is to be torn down after it was built six feet higher, nine feet longer and four feet wider than originally applied for. It was also built without a permit or approved planning permission in the hope of consent being granted retrospectively.

A demolition team arrived shortly before 10am yesterday and put up fences to prevent access to the property.

Neighbours of the three-floor home, which is owned by Andrew Murray, said the scheduled work may take up to three weeks to complete.

Mary Houston, 74, whose bungalow next-door is dwarfed by the condemned building, said it was "too tall and wide" but it was a "shame" for the owner.

She said: "It's too tall and wide according to the council which makes it too big for the area. The council say it's to come down so I suppose the sooner the better.

"It's a real shame that it's got to go as the poor chap put so much money into it.

"I just can't see how the council let it get this far in the first place if there were so many problems with it."

The original plans for the house stated it was to be only two floors high, but an unapproved third floor was later added.

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she thought the "nightmare" had gone on long enough. She said: "It is sad for the family and I do feel for them, but for those of us who actually live on this street it's been a nightmare.

"No one's lived in it since it was built and it's been broken into and kids can just wander in off the street as there's never been any fencing put up to close it off.

Neighbors protest Northwest house demolition - May 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The 1902 Goldsmith house at Northwest Quimby and 24th Avenue is on its way out. A demolition crew returned on Saturday, May 3, stripping the inside of the historic home, removing lath and plaster from every surface.

The city of Portland reversed itself Friday, May 2, reissuing a demolition permit so that the house can be removed without delay. Developer Marty Kehoe, who bought the building and 10,000-square-foot lot in March for $1.5 million, will have it torn down and replaced with seven townhouses. Members of the Northwest District Association have opposed the demolition, saying they were told of it too late to influence proceedings.

I asked the neighborhood association to rescind its objection and find a buyer so the house could stay, but they didnt do anything, Kehoe said Monday. So I got my attorneys to talk to the city and rescind the demo permit.

Keho said neighborhood association officials told him they might have found a buyer for the old house, but that word came too late, the demolition permit has been re-approved.

Kehoe said the association was vague about the buyers name and price, and he did not want to delay demolition only to find out there was no buyer.

Kehoe also said he rejected the association suggestion that he save the old house and cram four townhouses into the remaining space.

NWDA President Phil Selinger issued a statement Saturday, May 3, saying the group was "appalled" that the "city would abruptly reverse its correction of an incorrect reading of the code," and that "Mr. Kehoe would appear to seek neighborhood support, and then immediately abandon those efforts once the city removed the neighborhoods primary leverage in the form of a demolition delay."

Once the house has been stripped it will be torn down with a backhoe within weeks.

Demolition in Carreta resumes - May 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TENSION arose when the demolition of houses occupying a private lot on J. De Veyra St., Cebu City resumed last Friday.

Affected families raised placards and streamers expressing their opposition to the demolition, which was suspended for more than a month. They said the lot owner has not given them a place to relocate.

Members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) and personnel from Police Station 4 were deployed to the area to maintain order.

Nihangyo mi nga di sa gub-on among mga balay kay wa pa mi kapuy-an. Init kaayo unya duna mi mga bata nangasakit na lang (We asked that they do not demolish our houses because we have nowhere else to go. Our children have become sick from the heat), lamented Mary Lisa Manatad.

She said she has been living in the area for several years and she hopes that the lot owner would take pity on them.

The Municipal Trial Court (MTCC) Branch 6 ordered the demolition of about 34 structures that served as dwelling for 117 families on J. De Veyra St. at the North Reclamation Area within the jurisdiction of Barangay Carreta.

The court issued the order on Jan. 30 yet and was implemented only on March 11 and 12.

But only a few houses were cleared from the lot owned George Giminez because the families appealed the courts decision.

The court recently denied the families motion so the demolition resumed.

The demolition was carried out by Deputy Sheriff Edilberto Suarin, who requested the presence of the police after getting into an argument with the affected families.

Neighbors decry demolition of old Concord house - May 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CONCORD -- A bulldozer made quick work Monday morning of a house believed to be more than 80 years old, razed to make way for a small subdivision -- to the chagrin of a group of neighbors.

The house, at 3319 Walnut Ave., belonged to the Humphrey family, for whom a nearby street is named. Discovery Builders, a branch of the Concord-based Seeno family home-building empire, plans to build the Copperleaf subdivision of 11 single-family houses on the 2.36-acre former walnut grove.

Discovery Builders applied for a zoning change on the property to create slightly smaller lots -- 7,500-square-feet instead of the required 10,000 square feet. The city approved the tentative map and zoning change for the project in July 2009, despite neighbors' concerns about drainage, lot size, site elevation and parking.

Although neighbors had believed otherwise, thanks to action taken at the state level, Discovery Builders wasn't required to go through the approval process again or pay any additional fees before beginning work on the project.

"There have been some legislative extensions of subdivision maps in acknowledgment of the recession and the impact that's had on the home-building industry," said Carol Johnson, Concord's planning manager.

Under the most recent state bill, Discovery Builders has an automatic extension until July 2015, according to Johnson. There isn't a time limit on the rezoning, she added.

Discovery Builders did not return a call seeking comment.
