A demolition derby might be coming to Estancia in September.

Local resident David Travis asked the Estancia Board of Trustees at its regular meeting Tuesday to the use of the pumpkin chunkin' field west of town for a demolition derby, which Travis said he hopes to hold in September.

The derby would feature only pickup trucks modified to be destroyed and keep drivers safe, Travis said. That means all the glass in the trucks would be removed, restraint devices installed, doors chained shut and gas tanks removed a replaced with fuel cells.

"It's kind of like bumper cars for adults," he said.

Trustees were warm to the idea, saying it could be a nice event for people to come out and watch. However, trustees told Travis before they would approve anything, he would have to prove that he could obtain insurance for the event.

Also at the meeting:

The board approved construction of a boardwalk around Lake Arthur as a project for a Youth Conservation Corps grant. The town still has to apply for a grant of up to $150,000 for the project of which 70 percent must be used to pay salaries to youths working the project.

The grant application is due July 16.

Trustees held off approval on buying a new computer server for the town's offices. The current server is about five years old and needs to be replaced, said Town Clerk Linda Warren.

Demolition derby in works

Demo crew ready to begin its work. The job of tearing down the fire damaged building at 401 through 409 Main Street is about to begin.

The Cassgram reports The state permits are all lined up. The contractor was getting with the city building inspector yesterday and planned to start some work tomorrow with the major work beginning on Monday.

Finding out that his building was asbestos free was wonderful news, said Dr. Lee Larsen, the owner of 405-409 Main Street.

Larsen said it will be a big relief when the building is down and the liability is off his shoulders.

Peitzmeier Demolition and Concrete Cutting, Inc. of Omaha has the job of taking down what is left of the building. Owner Mark Peitzmeier expects three to four men to be working at the site for two to three weeks.

Once the west wall is downthe wall up against the Main Street Jewelers buildingthen it becomes fairly easy, said Peitzmeier. That fractured west wall will be taken down by hand with workers in JLG lift baskets working from above the wall with chisels and hammers.

Then the remaining structure will be knocked inward and excavators will be used to reach in and dig out the rubble.

Peitzmeier expects the city will watch closely as the hole is then backfilled with dirt and compacted.

The company has 20 years experience in the business and has worked in five states in the Midwest but does most of its work in Nebraska.

The exact cause of the fire that started in 401 Main on January 2nd has not been determined because of the entry dangers that exist.
