Demolition bid for old health department building - June 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 10:57 p.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 10:58 p.m.

The demolition phase at the old health department building on the grounds of the Etowah County Courthouse will need to be bid separately.

The Etowah County Commission on Tuesday approved an agreement with Craig Lipscomb Architect LLC for the demolition phase of the renovations.

The original plan was to figure the demolition in with the renovation cost, but it was necessary to bid it separately, Patrick Simms, chief administrative officer of the Etowah County Commission, said.

Simms said the demolition phase is expected to cost between $65,000 and $70,000, with asbestos removal to account for about $25,000 of the cost.

Once demolition is done, the renovation project will be bid. It is expected to cost about $600,000.

Simms in August told the commission that the Alabama Department of Public Safety wants to move the Glencoe drivers license office to the building.

The 5,000-square-foot building has been vacant since the health department was moved to East Gadsden several years ago. Some areas have been used for storage, but the building is not open for public use.

There have been discussions about renovations and what the building can be used for, but last year it was mentioned as a possible new site for the Alabama Department of Public Safetys drivers license office and State Trooper post.

Simms said one of the issues is the amount the Alabama Department of Public Safety can pay to lease the space.

Old library demolition continues to be stalled by asbestos - June 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In addition to a dispute between the demolition contractor and a subcontractor hired to tear down Billings old library, the city confirmed asbestos has been discovered in more areas, leading to oversight and testing by the state Department of Environmental Quality.

This demolition has been full of surprises, said Jackson Contractor Group Vice President Greg Hebner. Jackson Contractor Group is the general contractor for the demolition.

One of those surprises was when a subcontractors construction equipment went through a floor of the building. Hebner said the equipment went through the floor when the subcontractor deviated from the work plan.

Billings City Administrator Tina Volek said no one was injured. Hebner declined to say what kind of equipment went through the floor.

Volek also confirmed that asbestos had been found in two other parts of the building not identified by inspectors when demolition began.

The DEQ was tipped off on April 14 to the presence of asbestos by Bruce Ingraham, an asbestos abatement contractor not associated with the project.

Work at the site was stopped soon after, and DEQ inspectors were sent to the work site to investigate. In any permitting application for asbestos abatement, an inspector is required to inventory all materials in the building, testing them for asbestos.

In the pile of debris that had already been removed from the building, a DEQ investigator found eight types of materials that did not appear on the inventory list, said Larry Alheim, the enforcement specialist in charge of the inquiry.

The inspector, the City of Billings and Jackson were unaware that the asbestos was still in the building, Alheim said.

After testing the materials, two were shown to contain asbestos, according to a letter sent to Jackson, L & M Excavating and The Billings Public Library by Alheim on June 5.

China's Christians fend off church demolition crew amid latest Communist Party crackdown on faith - June 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition team attempting to remove a cross from Wenzhous Guantou church

Authorities claim the so-called Three Rectifications and One Demolition campaign is targeting all illegal buildings and not just churches. However, Beijing has faced increasing criticism, in and outside of China, over the demolitions and cross removals.

The campaign contravenes international norms and Chinese regulations governing religious affairs, the United States Congressional-Executive Commission on China said on Friday.

The campaign is designed to bring excessive religious sites and overly popular religious activities under control, according to an internal government document obtained by The New York Times last month.

The scale of Zhejiangs campaign has shocked the regions large Christian community.

More than 60 churches have suffered some kind of intervention since the start of this year, according to a list compiled last month by Asia News, a Catholic news agency.

Many of the interventions have taken place in Wenzhou, a port city that has one of Chinas largest Christian populations and is sometimes called the Jerusalem of the East.

However, recent weeks have seen the threat of demolition spread to other parts of Zhejiang province, including Ningbo, a major city around 140 miles south of Shanghai.

One thousand Ningbo Christians were forced to leave their place of worship last month after officials decided their 10-storey mega-church was an eyesore that should be destroyed.

Church activists and academics are increasingly convinced that Zhejiangs anti-church drive has Beijings support while some fear it may be a precursor for similar actions across the country.

Campa Cola compound demolition to be filmed - June 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Mumbai, June 17:

The demolition of illegal flats in Campa Cola compound beginning June 20 will be filmed and used as proof against the residents if they offer resistance, the citys municipal body said today.

We will be video-recording the entire demolition process, which we will carry out from June 20, so that it can be used as proof against residents in the Supreme Court if they stop us from performing our duties, Mohan Adtani, additional municipal commissioner, told PTI.

At the first stage of eviction, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will cut off electricity, water and gas supplies to the illegally built flats. Internal walls of the flats would be pulled down in the second phase before finally demolishing the balconies.

Adtani said the demolition process was slated to start today but was deferred on humanitarian grounds following the death of two residents.

We had planned to start the demolition drive from June 17, but we have now given the residents 3 more days to vacate the flats after the death of two residents. We will now start the demolition from June 20, he said.

The families of the deceased residents would be given extra time so that they can complete the last rituals, he said.

Campa Colas first resident, Vinod Kothari (82), died on June 15 after a heart attack while 83-year-old Chakravarti Chawla, a refugee from Pakistan, who had been hospitalised after suffering from kidney failure, expired on June 8.

Meanwhile, residents of Campa Cola said MCGM should extend their humanitarian gesture to other residents as well.

It is heartening to know that the MCGM has some humanity left in them. We sincerely hope that this humanitarian gesture gets extended to other residents as well. We, as citizens, expect the MCGM to take a humane approach to this issue, Ankit Garg, a resident said.

City authorizes demolition of house unless repaired - June 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Wilmington City Council has ordered that a house at 719 Nun St. must be repaired or it faces demolition.

The boarded-up house is at the corner of South Eighth and Nun streets across from the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

On Tuesday, the council unanimously voted to authorize demolition of the property because it runs afoul of the city's minimum housing code.

Chief Code Enforcement Officer Williane Carr told council members illegal dumping is a constant problem on the property and that the city has cleaned it 12 times since 2006. The owner is elderly and lives in another state, she said.

If the city tears down the house, the cost will be placed as a lien attached to the property.

Demolition of "Deep Throat" parking garage approved - June 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Arlington County Board has officially allowed a developer to raze the parking garage in Rosslyn, Va., where FBI official Mark Felt - known at the time as "Deep Throat" - met reporter Bob Woodward to relay information on the Watergate scandal.

The vote of the five-member board took place Saturday and was unanimous. The parking garage and office buildings at 1401 Wilson Blvd. will be replaced with a 28-story residential building and a 24-story commercial building with retail shops.

Despite the garage's storied history, the board members are enthusiastic about the new project.

"What's not to like?" County Board Chairman Jay Fisette, a Democrat, asked, according to the Washington Post. She noted it will bring residents, a grocery store, a park and other community benefits to the area, including $8 million for affordable housing.

Woodward's 2005 book, "The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat," revealed the location of the garage where Woodward and Felt conducted their clandestine late-night meetings. The information provided by Felt and the subsequent coverage of the Watergate scandal eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1974.

In 2011, Arlington County placed a marker outside the garage that the developer and county board intend to keep, several media outlets reported. The landowner has also promised to create a memorial to the events that took place there.

"We obviously view the whole Watergate situation as a significant event in the history of our country," Monday Properties Chief Development Officer Tim Helmig told ARLNow.com last August. "It would be our hope that we preserve that plaque and incorporate it in our redevelopment."
