Demolition company begins tearing down Florence's Trust building - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Demolition on Florence's first sky scrapper began Monday.

Crews began dismantling the Trust Building to make way for a new medical school city leaders say will bring tremendous growth to the area.

"Everything you see is demolition. It's just that the brick is so much easier to move and faster," Jason Wofford said. Wofford is part owner of Wofford Demolition.

Bricks, mortar and glass are now in piles after Wofford Demolition started tearing down Florence's Trust Building.

Demolition crews were on the inside of the building separating the metal from chunks of the building to help expedite the demolition process.

This machine will remove all of the brick that surrounds the Trust, doing that makes for a safer demo process.

"It is higher you just got to be a little bit more patient it's like running a big old crane," Wofford said.

Right now the west side of the building will be the only side which will see demo work until the contractor gets the go ahead from the department of transportation to close Irby Street.

Irby Street will have to be closed because some of the brick could fall into the streets; crews hope to have those permits later this week.

"You don't want to get in too fast because it does the work in the slow motion," Wofford said.

Local demolition firm tearing down Maritime Building later this year - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A woman inched closer to a demolition site on Granville Street last week, glued to the unfolding image on her iPad screen of an excavator ripping through the rubble of what was once an old church.

Marinus Verhagen stands in front of a demolition site on Thursday as his company ripped through a former church on Granville Street. The company will be tackling the Maritime Building later this year. AMANDA JESS THE NEWS

Marinus Verhagen sat in a nearby vehicle as one of his employees took care of business, outlining the considerations that go into tearing a building down when its in close proximity to others.

It wasnt much of a concern on this occasion, though the company did put an excavator between the church and a neighbouring home to ensure debris wouldnt land in the wrong direction.

Hes seen the end of several buildings over his 40-year career in demolition, but the Maritime Building teardown will be his largest project, in Pictou County at least.

Working in the city of Halifax is tough, Verhagen said, reflecting on his more difficult assignments over the years while pinpointing the lack of space and influx of drivers and pedestrians as concerns.

He took down the 11-storey Citadel Inn in 2012, his biggest task.

The Maritime Building wont be a small feat for his company either.

He has already figured out how hell tackle the century-old building that has been a safety concern in the core of New Glasgows downtown for several years.

In August, Verhagen Demolition Ltd. will bring in a licensed company to assist in the removal of hazardous materials, asbestos and pigeon feces, a process expected to take two months.

County council OKs demolition of 5 sites - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Allegheny County Council gave the go-ahead Tuesday night to demolish five buildings in the county's South Park.

The five buildings are the Duck Pond House, McConkey House, McConkey Barn, Sedota House and Schoonmaker Hall, all structures that have deteriorated and that the county has deemed in need of demolition.

The target date to begin demolitions of the first four buildings, at a cost of $35,000, is Aug. 1, according to the county. The bid for Schoonmaker Hall, which is being done separately because its foundation is near Catfish Run Creek, is expected to come this week, county manager William McKain told members of council.

The county's projected start date for demolition of Schoonmaker is Oct. 1.

The county has budgeted $175,000 for demolition of buildings in its parks.

An amendment by county Councilwoman Sue Means, R-Bethel Park, to require the county to remain within $133,000 for demolition costs, and to return to council if the costs superseded that level, failed to pass. The demolition bill passed 14 to zero, with Councilwoman Amanda Green Hawkins, D-Stanton Heights, absent.

Also Tuesday, county Executive Rich Fitzgerald gave his quarterly address to council, in which he appraised council members of topics ranging from the proposed restaurant rating system to the size of the county's fund balance to other developments in the county.

He told council members that the county was seeing a dozen restaurants open every month, and that senior citizens have expressed support for a restaurant rating system.

It was his first appearance before the full council in its chambers since their debate and vote in May on the proposal to drill for natural gas beneath Deer Lakes Park. Ms. Means asked if the county was looking at opening Round Hill Park in Elizabeth Township to drilling.

    Mr. Fitzgerald said no.

Demolition orders filed for 2 long-vacant Ann Arbor structures - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition plans are moving forward for a vacant home on Ann Arbors east side and a small former gas station on Main Street.

A building official said he expects the home at 3123 Cherry Tree Lane to be down in the coming days while a small structure at 800 N. Main St. will be demolished in around three weeks following an asbestos survey.

In recent years, neighbors of the Cherry Tree Lane property have complained that the home has served as a shelter for vagrants and leaks in the structure have produced significant water damage and mold in the interior.

The city's Building Board of Appeals ordered the house demolished in 2012, but Ralph Welton, the citys chief development official, said the city found its owner, George Patrikakos, was living in Greece, which presented legal challenges. He also had a reverse mortgage on the home, which further complicated the situation.

Patrikakos isnt in a financial position to bring the home up to code, Welton previously said, and it was lost to foreclosure.

Its time, Welton said of the homes demolition. The order to commence demolition has been issued to the contractors, so it should be complete within the next few days.

The struggle to get the property up to code started over ten years ago when building inspectors found a variety of issues in an illegally built addition, including holes in the wall that made it possible to see outdoors. A pipe from the bathroom sink drained into the shower and wires were running through the furnace.

Sections of siding are missing and debris remains scattered around the driveway and front lawn, though the home has been closely monitored over the last year.

The city will pay for the demolition and place a lien on the property.

The colorful former Main Street gas station has also been a focus of the building department for the last seven months.
