Architect sets up space to watch demos JOELLE DALLY
DEMOLITION CITY: YouTube membernzplattsuploaded this central Christchurch flyover video showing the extent of the demolitions and the rebuild.
An internationally renowned visiting architect wants to make a "spectacle" of central Christchurch demolitions by giving the public a place to watch them.
Venezuelan artist and architect Alejandro Haiek Coll, an artist-in-residence based at The Physics Room, set up a viewing platform beside Centennial Pool in a one-day experiment yesterday.
Using a relocatable grandstand borrowed from Gap Filler, he and volunteers erected it on council car parks, facing the pool, and watched as more of the complex was pulled down.
They used parking meters to pay for use of the car parks - $8 in total - and placed the ticket on the grandstand trailer.
''He [Haiek Coll] has been observing the way people stop and gather on footpaths to watch demolitions. He wanted to create a more formal place for people to watch,'' Gap Filler creative director Coralie Winn said.
Haiek Coll tested the idea at Centennial Pool as it was a ''significant'' demolition, she said.
The Armagh St facility will make way for the new Margaret Mahy Family Playground, despite opposition from the community.
Gap Filler plans to use the grandstand in spring and summer for ''pop-up'' sporting events.

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Crews began work Monday on the process of demolishing St. Raphael Catholic Church in Bay Village.
The building is coming down to make way for a new churchthat will seat 1,100 people -- almost doubling worship space in the growing parish.
The project also will include achapel and community room on the Dover Center Road property. The construction is expected to be completed by August of next year.
The old church, built in 1953, has been hosting at least six Masses a weekend to serve the needs of the about 3,500 families who are members of the parish. During construction, parishioners will worship in the Parish Activity Center.
The architect for the church construction is Zarzycki-Malik, which has worked with St. Raphael on earlier projects. The general contractor is the John G. Johnson Construction Co.
The new church will be fan-shaped and front on Dover Center Road. Stained glass windows from the old church will be refurbished and installed in the new building.
The crucifix, tabernacle and marble in the existing church also will be used in the new worship space. The pews were removed and sold to another church.
Bishop Richard Lennon of the Catholic Diocese of Clevelandis scheduled to consecrate the church on Aug. 22, 2015.

Request for proposal deadline is July 25
Over five years after the former Abitibi-Bowater papermillin Grand Falls-Windsor produced its last roll of newsprint the government of Newfoundland and Labrador has the ball rolling for its demolition.

The process for the demolition of the former Abitibi-Bowater mill in Grand Falls-Windsor is underway.
The papermillceased production in 2009 and was expropriated by the province. In late 2012 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favour of Abitibi Bowater when it decided the province was responsible for the remediation of the facility. Funds for themill's demolition were included in this year's provincial budget.
Though information has been sparse, it was confirmed in May the request for proposals was out. This week, Transportation and Works Minister Nick McGrath spoke with The Advertiser and divulged more details about the process.
Though there is no timeline in place yet on when the physical work will start on the structure, McGrath said the deadline for proposals is July 25. He said by late summer or early autumn, the province should be in a position to select a proponent and move forward with the work.
"What I'd ask my senior officials, I would certainly want to have it expedited and get this process started because it's been going on long enough," McGrath said.
Because the request for proposal process is still ongoing, McGrath could not offer any information about the number of applicants they've received so far, or potential cost.
"The whole idea of an RFP rather than a tender is that we didn't want to be restricted to price only here. With tenders...you have to go with the lowest bidder unless there's a reason not to. With an RFP you take other factors into consideration."

MONTGOMERY Madison Marquette started its demolition phase on Route 206 last week to prepare the site for the construction of the Montgomery Promenade.
The Montgomery Promenade will be a "retail town center" located on the corer of Routes 206 and 518, said a description of the project on Madison Marquettes website.
Project Manager John Muly said workers were taking down the old Princeton Volkswagen building and a vacant warehouse.
He said he did not know how many people were working on the demolition and did not provide an estimate of the phases cost.
"Were taking down the buildings to make the site look better," he said. "The site will be ready for work after the demolition."
He did not say which companies are talking with Madison Marquette about leasing spaces.
Township Administrator Donato Nieman said, "the township is pleased to see the vacant buildings coming down and we like to see the project is moving forward."
The 330,000-square-foot development will serve as a "pedestrian friendly retail experience and a community focal point" for more than 120,000 people, said the website.
