House demolition fires heritage row - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE proposed demolition of a shabby, but historically significant East Toowoomba house has raised a dispute over the protection character homes deserve.

Toowoomba father Stewart Gordon bought the pre-Second World War property at 18CavellSt last year with plans to replace it with a new, colonial-style home in keeping with the streetscape.

He never envisaged the hurdles he would run into along the way.

Unbeknownst to him, the house was included on council's list as a "neighbourhood character place".

Council planning officers recommended the demolition be refused - a decision overturned by council's Development Assessment Panel.

The majority of neighbours have seen blueprints of the home Mr Gordon plans to build and want the run-down cottage gone.

However, National Trust of Queensland spokeswoman Stephanie Keays said it would set a dangerous precedent.

"The fact council has gone against its own officers' advice and recommended it be demolished means we don't have any certainty over those character houses being protected," she said.

Mr Gordon enlisted REID Consulting Engineers to investigate the structure's integrity, who found it was "extremely unlikely that this building can be rectified to a satisfactory standard in an economical manner".

The rectification costs were put at $142,800.

Demolition Contractors Add New Voice to Global Disaster Response Conference - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

West Lafayette, IN (PRWEB) August 02, 2014

Emergency management experts from around the world met at Purdue University recently to debate best practices for life-saving response and recovery operations after natural or man-made catastrophes, opening the dialogue for the first time this year to include industry experts.

The setting was the 10th International Conference of the International Institute for Infrastructure Resilience and Reconstruction, known in the emergency management community as "I3R2.

This year, the National Demolition Association (NDA) contributed a new voice to the conference, promoting the value of public/private collaboration in these efforts. Thomas Stahr, Chairman of the NDA Disaster Response Committee and Mark Shaurette and Randy Rapp of Purdues Department of Building Construction Management presented a paper entitled First Responder/Private Industry Collaboration to Advance Disaster Response.

As part of its mission, the NDA is dedicated to collaborating with First Responders, emergency management organizations and government agencies to help improve the effectiveness of response efforts. Were working to educate these audiences about the resources and skills possessed by demolition and disaster response companies that could be made available for widespread disaster response, said Stahr, a consultant with Environmental Resources Management (ERM). From our work at past disaster sites, we know we can help facilitate faster response and save lives.

He and former NDA Health and Safety Committee chair Jerry Myrick, also with ERM, participated in an industry panel on best practices at I3R2. The roundtable included representatives from the Restoration Industry Association and the U.S. volunteer recovery sector. Other participating organizations in the three-day event included the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Haiti Reconstruction Fund, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Society of Military Engineers and the International Emergency Management Society.

Our members have played an important role following such disasters as the 1994 Northridge and 1989 Loma Prieta California earthquakes, the attacks on 9/11, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the disastrous 2013 Colorado floods, said Michael R. Taylor, CAE, NDA Executive Director. Besides possessing fleets of highly specialized equipment and attachments, most of our members have HAZWOPER-trained labor forces who are experienced working with unstable structures and disposing of hazardous materials. They also know how to move large amounts of debris with the finesse often needed in search and rescue operations.

The NDA offers First Responders and emergency management organizations and the government agencies that control them with the resources they need to identify the characteristics and capabilities of a qualified demolition contractor. The message were promoting is that its important to pre-qualify supporting members of an emergency management team now, before the next disaster hits, said Stahr.

Former NBA Exec: Demolition almost never happened - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The president of the Sacramento Kings basketball team was all smiles Friday morning as he shook hands with construction workers in the predawn hours.

Watch report:Demolition begins at Downtown Plaza to make room for arena

By 6 a.m., those workers would begin the demolition of the Downtown Plaza to make way for a new $477-million sports and entertainment complex for the Sacramento Kings.

Photos: Downtown Plaza demolition gets underway

It was a moment Friday morning that Chris Granger, current team president and former NBA executive, admitted he thought might never happen.

"I will tell you, there were weeks I didn't think it would happen when I was at the NBA," Granger said. "There were weeks I was (more) focused on how to get another market going than I was on Sacramento."

During a brief breakfast celebration for demolition crews in the moments before work began, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson recalled the ups and downs and threats of relocation and court challenges that preceded this moment.

"I think back to Orlando, during the All-Star weekend when we thought we had a done deal -- and then to have that fall apart, that was a low point," Johnson said.

And that is why Johnson said the start of demolition is "huge."

"When (Chris and I) first started working together on this, he had a full head of hair," Johnson said. "That tells you how hard we've been working.

Demolition of Salem Harbor Station begins - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SALEM It all begins with B5. Or ends, depending on how you look at it.

Demolition began at Salem Harbor Station Wednesday afternoon, with crews first setting upon one of the power plants 11 steel tanks. The work was supposed to begin Monday, but it was delayed by the lightning storms in the area.

Workers on site said they were thrilled the plant is finally hitting the demolition milestone.

Its been a long time coming, said Lou Arak, project director.

B5 is a large oil tank between the plants former coal pile and Derby Street. The process to demolish it involves cutting off pieces with a claw tool on a long-reach excavator. The tool is used both to slice sections of the steel and then grab them out of place.

It can actually shear like scissors would, Arak said. When you pull it, itll pull across the weld lines.

Before workers could get that far, they had to tear open an entrance in the retaining wall that surrounds the tank, so the excavator could get in. This was also done with the excavator. The wall will remain in place while the tank is coming down, as it blocks noise.

The pieces of tank will be stored on site temporarily and then transferred to a barge at the plants former coal dock, from which theyll travel to a steel recycling facility.

The beginning of the demolition comes after a cleanup phase that saw a small group of workers disconnect electricity, drain oil from machines and perform other tasks in the weeks immediately following the plants shutdown at the end of May. Demolition will focus first on the sites southerly portions, an area populated by tanks and the massive coal conveyor.

Before they can be dismantled, the tanks have to be thoroughly cleaned out. Two of them still need to be cleaned; one was left with oil during the plants last weeks, so the plant could generate electricity again should the regional grid operator request it.
