THE demolition of eight houses on Capitol properties in Barangay 3, Bacolod City is now ongoing, and the organic restaurant operated by Organik Na Negros Producers and Retailers Association will soon follow.

Negros Occidental Provincial Administrator Enrique Pinongan said Friday the affected families of the demolished houses were given P5,000 each by Ayala Land Inc.

Capitol security chief Venchito Magalona represented the province in a meeting with the barangay officials and representatives of Ayala Land about the demolition.

Pinongan said the property giant may soon start its development project on its properties it leased from the Capitol once the Register of Deeds transfers the title of the land to the Provincial Government.

That's the only thing that Ayala Land is waiting for, he said.

The Provincial Board has already approved the supplemental budget for the payment of transfer tax of the lots swapped by the province to the lots owned by the Gonzaga-Vasquez families.

Once paid, the Register of Deeds will transfer the title of the properties to the provincial government, Pinongan said. (TDE)

Demolition of houses, resto on Capitol lands underway

Demolition of the bridge spanning the Monongahela River between Donora and Webster will begin before year's end.

The job is not expected to be completed until spring.

Long known as the Donora-Webster Bridge, the span was renamed the Lieutenant Governor Ernest P. Kline Memorial Bridge in honor of the Webster native.

The $2,601,566.39 demolition contract was awarded in June to Beech Construction Inc.

Project manager Scott Faieta said Beech recently submitted plans to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for demolition of the portion of the bridge over land on the Washington and Westmoreland county sides of the river.

The plans are under review at PennDOT District 12 in Uniontown.

Faieta said those portions of the bridge could come down as early as November.

The main span over the river likely won't be demolished until May, Faieta said.

He said a 200-day review is required for PennDOT, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard because the main section will be dropped into the river.

Built in 1908, the bridge was closed in July 2009 after a routine inspection revealed several main support beams had deteriorated.
