Demolition of uninhabited homes at Roma camp completed - October 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of uninhabited homes at Roma camp goes ahead

Authorities on Wednesday went ahead with the contentious demolition of 12 uninhabited residences at a Roma camp in the northern Athenian suburb of Halandri but have postponed the relocation of dozens of residents to a new site west of the capital amid reactions.

Residents of the camp, which was established behind the present-day Nomismatokopio metro station over 40 years ago, on Tuesday defied evacuation orders and staged protest action the included roadblocks on Mesogeion Avenue.

The Roma at this particular location are protesting a decision by authorities to have them relocated to a mountain in Megara, west of Athens, arguing that it is too isolated and vulnerable to the elements.

After several meetings between municipal and regional authorities with representatives of the Roma residents, it was decided that the demolition of the 12 uninhabited residences would go ahead on Wednesday morning, but the relocation would be postponed until a more suitable site is found.

Speaking on Skai TV on Wednesday morning, the Interior Ministrys general secretary of decentralized administration, Manolis Angelakas, said that it will take up to two months for the residents of the camp to be relocated.

Halandri Mayor Simos Roussos said that an agreement was reached on Tuesday for the demolition of 12 uninhabited residences with the approval of the community's president, Stelios Kalamiotis, who supervised Wednesday's operation.

The objective, Roussos said, is to "meet the decisions of the courts which have to be executed at the smallest possible cost to the people."

The mayor also said that his intention when backing the Roma protesters on Tuesday and calling for more dialogue was to "avert police intervention, which would have put the Roma, their neighbors and the entire area at risk."

"The Roma need to be relocated under conditions that ensure a dignified quality of life, with access to healthcare, education and all the necessary infrastructures," Roussos added.

Cary-Grove High School theater demolition makes way for new auditorium - October 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CARY In order to make way for a new auditorium at Cary-Grove High School, the 50-year-old theater had to be torn down. The fenced-off area at the school has piles of old concrete and debris.

In recent weeks, workers removed asbestos, members of the Cary Area Fire Protection District assisted with the teardown by holding a training session in the auditorium, and large equipment was brought in to perform the main part of the demolition.

Crystal Lake-based Community High School District 155 is in the process of building a new 650-seat auditorium for the school, with an accompanying lobby, multipurpose room, restrooms, dressing rooms and scene shop. The yearlong project also will include a reconfigured main entrance for the school to provide enhanced security during school days.

The $8.5 million project has been in the works in recent years.

Because of the yearlong project, the school has relocated and rescheduled several performing arts events throughout the year. Concerts are scheduled to take place in the schools gyms, and the annual spring musical is planned for January at the Crystal Lake South High School auditorium.

The traditional fall follies are scheduled for the spring.

A spring choral concert has been moved to October.

It was very important ... to preserve the performance opportunities for our students, Choir Director Kristine Hester said. We didnt want anybody to miss out on anything.

Hester added the change of venue also allows some creative juices to flow as they work out how to set up some of the performances, from seating to lighting.

Just rehearsing for performances will take some adjustment, Hester said. Sometimes performing arts teachers would use the auditorium for practicing choreography for fall follies.

Misplaced bid opened for dome demolition - October 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

VALPARAISO | A mislabeled envelope might end up being the low bid for the demolition of the former Natural Ovens Bakery dome.

The city's Board of Public Works and Safety held a special meeting Wednesday to accept the bid from Dore & Associates Contracting Inc., of Bay City, Mich. The company's base bid for demolition of the dome was $483,500, which is about $150,000 less than the G. E. Marshall bid that previously was considered the low bid.

The Dore bid packet arrived at city hall Thursday, a day before the deadline to submit bids, but the Fed Ex envelop was addressed to the city's Redevelopment Commission. So, it was forwarded to that office, Clerk-Treasurer Sharon Swihart said. The envelope was not opened until later. The three other bids, including Marshall's, were opened at the board's regular meeting Friday.

The bids also contained amounts for four alternatives that involved removing the concrete from the parking area and driveways, crushing all the concrete except that from the dome and hauling it to an industrial site near the airport water treatment plant, crushing the parking and driveway concrete and hauling it to the industrial site, and removing the polyethylene cover from the dome, crushing the concrete and hauling it to the industrial site.

    G. E. Marshall's bid for the latter was $26,140 while Dore's was $248,100.

Ross Marshall, of G.E. Marshall, was at Wednesday's meeting and acknowledged the Dore bid was lower "if you want to give the job to a company 300 miles away." Representatives from the Foundation for Fair Contracting also were at the meeting asking for information about the bids.

The bids are being reviewed by consultant John Blosky, of Amereco Inc., and a recommendation will be presented to the board of works at the Oct. 10 meeting. The redevelopment commission is funding the demolition, but budgeted only $350,000. A request for additional money will be presented to the commission at its meeting Wednesday.

The dome was deeded to the city by the county earlier this year after several attempts to sell it for back taxes could find no bidders. Delinquent taxes on the property exceeded the value of the dome. The city plans to redevelop the site, and any money it receives will go toward covering the demolition. Any left over will be split with the city receiving 70 percent and the county 30 percent.
