Demolition allows MSU to build a facility that best achieves the goals inherent in biomedical research -- Vennie Gore
EAST LANSING, MI. The former Grand Rapids Press building will be demolished next spring, making room for a new Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center on a portion of the site at 155 Michigan Street NE.
The $3 million demolition plan was approved on Friday, Dec. 12, by the Michigan State University Board of Trustees. The university, which operates the College of Human Medicines Secchia Center just up the Michigan Street hill, acquired the property from the Press owners in 2012.
Demolition allows MSU to build a facility that best achieves the goals inherent in biomedical research that requires high-tech laboratories and allows for the site to have maximum flexibility for future development, said Vennie Gore, MSU vice president for auxiliary enterprises, in a statement. The building to be razed is 173,384 square feet on a site of approximately 4.3 acres. It was built in 1966 and served as the Press headquarters until 2012. Demolition is scheduled to begin in March 2015, with final completion of demolition by December 2015.
Pending approvals, the new Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center is planned to open late 2017.
At a future MSU Board of Trustees meeting this winter, the MSU administration plans to recommend construction of the Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center on a portion of this site. The remainder of the site may be divided into parcels for future development by the university and/or private developers.
Last April, Dick Temple, architect and project manager for MSU's College of Human Medicine, said officials are planning for a 145,000-square-foot building that will be five or six stories tall. He said the Grand Rapids Research Center's design will reflect a gateway to both the Medical Mile and the North Monroe neighborhood.
Funding will be provided through the universitys general fund and tax-exempt financing with debt repayment from a variety of sources including the general fund. RELATED: MSU plans to demolish former Grand Rapids Press headquarters to build biomedical research center

Demolition date set for former Grand Rapids Press building
Demolition started Friday on part of the massive Crowell-Collier complex in downtown Springfield, part of a more than 15-year effort to make the aging building safer.
Three of the complexs 11 buildings will be torn down by owner Mosier Industrial Services as part a court order. Work began Friday on a building in the center of the structure called Building F, removing brick walls and windows.
The city has focused on Crowell-Collier because of the scale of the complex and several safety and maintenance concerns, including two fires, falling bricks, lack of maintenance for 60 years and a large amount of unknown materials that were jammed in it, City Law Director Jerry Strozdas said.
There are just aspects of this building that, all told, made it a significant threat to public safety, he said.
Mosier had been ordered to tear down Building F by Oct. 31 and Buildings J and K by the end of the year. The court order was revised last month to adjust those deadlines and remove a completion date. The company now is to proceed continuously until the demolition is done, Strozdas said, but may take some weather-related breaks.
It reversed the order of some of the demolition, Strozdas said, doing interior work such as removing pipes first and then switching to the exterior.
The city would have liked the demolition to have moved quicker, Strozdas said, but is pleased that its progressing.
Its been an ongoing process. At each of the steps along the process, the building became less and less of a threat to the public safety and that was our mission all along, he said.
Part-owner of the building Carl Carroll said Friday that crews only had one working elevator to remove all of the material.
Every time we would get it empty, we would find a new room that had more in it, Carroll said. It would be semi loads after semi loads It took Harry 27 elevators and 40 years to fill it up and we emptied it in 3 years.

Workers began tearing down old buildings along South Orange Blossom Trail on Friday to make way for the new Orlando Police Headquarters.
Construction of the new $40 million building won't start until April, but a demolition crew must clear the site. Before the city bought it, the Parramore property was a Lynx bus depot, and an elementary school years before that. City officials expect the new police station to be finished in the summer of 2016.
It would sit along a relatively rundown stretch of Orange Blossom Trail between South and Anderson streets, about a mile west of downtown near the Citrus Bowl. Mayor Buddy Dyer hopes it will be a catalyst for redevelopment.
"Not only will we have a new community-friendly, up-to-date building, but it's also going to help us with the revitalization of South Orange Blossom Trail and this whole area of town," said Dyer, who climbed into an excavator Friday to ceremoniously knock down a chunk of the old Lynx building.
Orlando officials have been pushing for a new police station to replace the current one Hughey Avenue for more than 15 years, and came close to building one under former Mayor Glenda Hood.
There's renewed haste now because the city has sold the current police station to the Orlando Magic, which plans to tear it down after the new one opens. The team plans to use the land to build a $200 million entertainment complex of offices, shopping and dining space, apartments and more.
The current police station opened in 1972 as the Municipal Police-Court Complex. It housed the police headquarters, two city courtrooms and a jail designed to hold 300 prisoners. At the time, the city had 253 officers; today there are 743 officers and another 229 civilian employees.
The building was designed to late-1960s standards, before offices were built to accommodate computer networks.
The courtrooms and jail eventually closed. The space previously taken up by the jail which isn't air-conditioned has sat empty since the county took over the job of housing lawbreakers in the jail on 33rd Street.
The new, 94,500-square-foot police station is designed to accommodate the department's more modern operations and will feature up-to-date technology, Chief John Mina said. Unlike the current location, the new site will include plenty of public parking, and the building includes space for community meetings.

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)
Mangaluru, Dec 13: The state high court (HC) has directed Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner to raze to the ground a building constructed by former zilla panchayat president, Sucharita Shetty, in Kadandale village in Mangaluru taluk. The order came in the form of judgment relating to a petition filed by Shanta Shetty from Kadandale village, alleging that Shetty had built an RCC building in the agricultural land owned by her in that village..
Justice Mohan Reddy, who heard the case, noted that Sucharita Shetty had constructed an RCC building in agricultural land illegally without obtaining prior permission as required from the panchayat development officer. He ordered for the eviction of people living in the building, demolition of the building in question, and also collection of fine for constructing a building by violating rules in vogue.
The single judge bench also instructed the DC to take suitable action against extension officer of the taluk, and Paladka gram panchayat development officer, Rajendra Prasad Shetty, for not taking action to stop illegal construction of building by Sucharita Shetty in agricultural land. The bench noted that these officials were fully aware of the fact that this building was coming up in agricultural land in violation of Karnataka Land Reforms Act, and hence their failure to act is tantamount to dereliction of duty.
Shanta Shetty owns land in Kadandale, and Sucharita Shetty had taken initiatives to construct a building in her land. Shetty had argued that he has a share in the said property. Shanta had filed a suit against Shetty in a subordinate court, but during this period, the building construction was completed.
Aggrieved by this, Shanta Shetty had approached the HC seeking demolition of this structure. The HC, in addition to ordering demolition of the building, also instructed the subordinate court to dispose of the civil suit pending before it before February 2015.
