Demolition will make way for a new James Madison Elementary School Number 10 in Garfield.
Demolition has started for the new James Madison Elementary School Number 10.
The Phase 1 work will prepare the site for the future construction of a new, approximately 50,000-square-foot elementary school facility that will be designed to educate approximately 275 students from kindergarten through fifth grades. The school, located on Alpine Street, will be the third new building constructed by the School Development Authority (SDA) in Garfield.
Committed to the advancement of capital projects around the state, Gov. Chris Christie Administration officials were on hand on Dec. 5 to announce the start of demolition activities at a site in Garfield to make room for a new elementary school.
"Demolition is the first step toward a new school for the Garfield community," said SDA CEO Charles B. McKenna. "The states school construction program is positively impacting the overcrowding that exists in districts throughout the state, including Garfield."
The new James Madison Elementary School Number 10 will replace the former school that will be demolished.
"Through everyones hard work, the students, administration, staff, Board of Education and community, the much needed facility will now provide the district some relief for its many un-housed students," said Garfield School District Superintendent Nicholas L. Perrapato.
Tricon Enterprises, Inc. of Keyport was awarded a $1,057,000 general construction contract to perform phase one work consisting of remediation, demolition of the existing structure and importation of clean fill to be placed, compacted and graded. All demolition and associated site work is expected to be completed by early 2015.
The SDA anticipates advertising for a general contractor to construct the school later this month. Following approval of a construction award, the initial phase of the award will begin with a required constructability review. The constructability review will provide the contractor with an opportunity to carefully review the contract documents (plans and specifications) to identify any issues which could impact the schedule or cost of completion, so that such issues can be resolved before commencement of construction. Following the conclusion of this review process and the SDAs agreement with its results, the contractor will be issued a separate notice-to-proceed to begin construction of the school. Construction on the new school is anticipated to begin by the end of 2015.

DEMOLITION of the Gallowgate twins - the tallest flat towers in Glasgow - will begin in the new year.
Pic shows two blocks of high rise flats in Whitevale St, Glasgow which are due for demolition.
The 298ft high rise Whitevale and Bluevale flats in Dennistoun will be taken down, piece by piece, as part of a 6m renovation of the city's East End housing stock.
The towers, which dominated the city skyscape for more than four decades, have been standing empty since last year.
The 31 storey blocks will be taken down by specialist staff on a platform placed on top of the buildings.
The 'TopDownWay' demolition technology - which has been used before in Italy and France - was chosen due to the close proximity of the neighbouring block and nearby roads, and the unique core structure of the blocks.
Work will start on 109 Bluevale Street next month, with contractor Safedem lifting the platform onto its roof. It is expected to be completed by summer 2015.
It will be followed by the deconstruction of 51 Whitevale Street soon after with the high rise razed to the ground by 2016.
Alex McGuire, Director of Property for GHA's parent company Wheatley Group said: "The Gallowgate Twins have a special place in people's hearts and in Glasgow's history, but their time has come to an end.
"This unique demolition is another important step in the ongoing regeneration of housing in the city and will ensure our homes are fit for future generations."

Commissioners won't let one of the city's historic homes be demolished and a significant, centuries-old Indian mound face potential harm without first reviewing the case themselves.
They unanimously agreed Wednesday to hold their own hearing Jan. 6 regarding demolition of the 96-year-old Rivermont House on the north banks of the New River in Sailboat Bend.
However, several commissioners said they were less concerned about the house, which the owner's representatives said was too far gone to be saved and had little remaining historical value, than about the Tequesta Indian mound underneath it.
A recent survey found thousands of artifacts that could date back 1,000 years or more in the mound. The firm that conducted the survey for owner Michelle Grosman also outlined steps that would be taken so that demolishing the house would not affect the mound.
The city's Historic Preservation Board this month unanimously approved Grosman's request to demolish the house and the plan for protecting the mound. The demolition also had the support of the Sailboat Bend Civic Association.
A report by Merrilyn Rathbun, honored by the commission earlier at Wednesday's meeting for her role in preserving the city's history, said the house at 1016 Waverly Road should not be destroyed. The Florida Department of State has also weighed in, sending a letter encouraging the home's preservation.
