Chinese city probes 'AIDS demolition team' scandal - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In Nanyang of Central China's Henan province, a handful of 'AIDS patients' were reportedly employed to threaten residents to move out of their homes to make way for a real estate development project, reported the Beijing News on Wednesday.

Striking red graffiti reading "demolition team of AIDS patients" were first spotted on walls, bulletin boards or buildings in the residential community in Wolong District of the city ten days ago. The threatening messages have haunted residents living in the neighborhood since then.

A resident told the reporter that she had stopped taking her kid to the community since the appearance of the threatening messages, which were left by some self-proclaimed 'AIDS patients' according to residents and video footage.

The six have been seen strolling around the community, threatening to spread HIV to residents, and setting off firecrackers to disturb them at night.

The residential community sits on a prime location in Nanyang with reputable schools nearby, which is one of reported reasons the residents refused to leave their houses.

A resident surnamed Liu said that if the residents of the community want to send their children to these schools, a property ownership certificate of a house in the area is required, and if a new building replaces the old one, such a certificate would not be offered by the developer.

Liu added that since 2012, the harassment of the residents began when water, electricity and gas supply to the community was cut off until the victims brought a lawsuit against the suppliers,

In response to the incident, Nanyang government denied that it is behind the "AIDS demolition team". It said that an investigation of the allegation is underway. Besides, the company in charge of the demolition of the community has been ordered to suspend the project and cooperate with the investigation.

It is not yet known whether the team really included AIDS patients or just used the disease as a threat. The province of Henan was once known for its large population of HIV carriers, many of whom were villagers infected through illegal blood sales.

Demolition has been put under the spotlight in China for years because of the huge profits involved and the sometimes violent process.

Demolition Watch: The 10 Best Demolitions of 2014, Judged Purely on Aesthetics - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Long have people debated whether using explosive charges demolish buildings, knocking out key supports so they "implode" within their own footprint, is an art or a science. Stop debating! It's pretty obviously both, and as such, it's about time the year's most memorable demolitions were put in a pageant and judged on execution, catharsis, and overall aesthetic merit. Here are the ten buildings that went out with the most pizzazz in 2014.

There's a full seven seconds between when the first blasts are heard from outside this warehouse in Utica, N.Y., and when the brick-and-concrete silo at one corner collapses, throwing up a plume of red dust. Initially, a few people watching seem to think something has gone wrong, but the delayed gratification pays off: "Wow, baby!" exclaims one viewer. "A half-an-hour drive for this!"

Though it's been called the "biggest blast in Ottawa's history," the demolition of Ottawa's Sir John Carling Building made it on this list not for some dubious superlative, but because you can see each vertical section buckle as it comes down. Also taken into consideration was how the cleared-out interior let's you look all the way through some portions, even while they begin to fall.

While it didn't do anything particularly new for the genre, the demolition of this 32-story university building in the Bockenheim district of Frankfurt, Germanythe tallest building in Europe ever felled by implosion, which required a full ton of explosives placed into 1,500 drilled holesis notable for the cleanness of its execution. The whole thing is over in about ten seconds; after one half of the tower drops, the other lingers in the air for a moment, Wile E. Coyote-esque, before collapsing atop the rest. German engineering at its finest.

Maybe it's redundant to call something done with explosives "bombastic," but we stand by the characterization with this Chinese residential tower, which was destroyed at the same time as a nearby bridge. The very externally expressive charges go off in quick succession, progressing up the building, sending large chunks careening off. Rather theatrically, the clocktower-like top section and the cylindrical volume it's perched upon stay intact as they fall.

Barring any who were sad to see it go, how could you not appreciate this partial demolition of Texas A&M's Kyle Field stadium? Three tower sections are the first to bow out, sending debris flying as they smash into the ground, before the section behind it buckles, earning extra points for semiotic resonance by bearing the name of the structure.

Notable because an adorable four-year-old got to press the button that brought it down, the Executive Park Motor Inn's demolition is also cool because it let's you track the charges going off inside. You can see them through the windows running up the center of the building, before a full floor blows out on two sides.

Implosion contractor Steve Pettigrew called the collapsing of Scott Tower "perfect," and though he likely meant that it went off according to plan, without damage to nearby structures, it was also formally excellent (though to be sure, the soundtrack in this clip does help). The early '70s residential tower drops from the center outward, and the two supports on the sides fold down neatly over the rest.

Some might protest that the visual splendor of the Houston Club building's demolition was only due to the fact that the outer walls had already been removed. Our thought is: a good implosion is a good implosion, and we're going to leave this light show right here.

Albany's Wellington Hotel Annex was given a very colorful sendoff when it was cleared to make room for a $66M convention center. Which parts were for the fireworks display, and which were for the demolition? We (mostly) can't tell, which seems like the point.

McDonald's demolition, reconstruction on Airport Road should see 60-day turnaround - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BLACKMAN TWP., MI The demolition and reconstruction of McDonald's at2601 Airport Road isn't expected to take more than 60 days, Blackman Township officials say.

Supervisor Jancek said the demolition is scheduled to start in March, and all permits have beenreceived by the township.

"There is no timetable yet for construction,"Dan Spaulding,a Grand Rapids-basedspokesmanforMcDonald's Corp., said. "Those Airport Road crew members who want to will be able to work at other area McDonald's (during construction)."

Theboard unanimouslyapproved the new McDonald's plan at its Octobermeeting, and Jancek said the company will knock the old structure down and replace it with a more modern version.

"One of the entrances will be terminated, the drive-thru will be a double-lane," said Township Engineer Jack Ripstra during a Blackman to Downtown Development Authoritymeeting onDec. 10. "A smaller dining room and bigger kitchen, since the most revenue is made through drive-thru."

Spauldingsaidthe restaurantis being demolished because it's easier forcrews to rebuild, rather than renovate an existing building.

The current building was built in June 1976,according to the Jackson Local website.

The timetable for demolition of the ABC cinema site has been revealed exclusively to the Courier.

There will be a three month schedule of work on the towns ugliest eyesore, starting on July 14..

Developer Bellhouse Joseph, which owns the site with equity firm The Carlyle Group, unveiled the plan to the Courier on Wednesday.

It also said it had hired leading UK contractors Sir Robert McAlpine and national demolition contractor Keltbray to carry out the work.

Bellhouse Josephs chairman Ed Bellhouse also revealed negotiations with Waitrose which had been going on for two-and-a-half years had collapsed last week.

He said Waitrose had wanted to drive down the rent to a level which would make the proposition economically unviable.

Waitrose told the Courier it was down to property elements that can influence the viability of a scheme, such as scheme costs, parking, layout and the challenging market conditions retailers face.

The key dates in the demolition timetable are:
