Progress seen in Kensington Heights demolition after more years, millions than expected - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tearing down the old Kensington Heights public housing project vacant since 1980 has been long, expensive and frustrating for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority.

It has been equally discouraging for those who live nearby and wonder why it takes so long to get things done in that part of the city.

But after years of scandal, lawsuits, indictments and escalating costs, the sixth and last tower could be taken down by the end of this summer, said Dawn E. Sanders-Garrett, the authoritys executive director.

This has been frustrating, Sanders-Garrett said. I definitely understand the feelings of people in the community who wish this had been done sooner. No one wants more than me to see this completed. I am looking forward to the positive economic boost that a redeveloped Kensington Heights can give to this community. Im excited.

The projects $9.8 million cost so far is more than three times what the authority intended to spend when the demolition work began in 2009, and it projects $1.5 million in additional costs before finishing the work. It has also spent millions from its cash reserves on the project, prompting complaints from a tenant representative on its board.

But now the last tower, near Erie County Medical Center, is all ready and cleared for demolition, Sanders-Garrett said.

Still, people such as Edward L. Wiley, 70, who lives near the site, say it seems that the work has taken forever.

PRINCETON: Demolition work to close portion of Witherspoon Street starting Jan. 16 - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A two-block stretch of Witherspoon Street needs to be closed for possibly up to four days starting Jan. 16 so a demolition crew can safely take down the last remaining building at the old Princeton Hospital.

The Princeton Council is scheduled to be briefed Monday on the proposed closure, the recommendation of the Princeton Police and the municipal engineering department, and then decide whether to sign off on it or not. The site is being cleared for a future AvalonBay 280-unit residential development.

Assuming the council goes along with the recommendation, Witherspoon would be closed between Birch and Franklin avenues, said town engineer Robert V. Kiser on Wednesday. The closure, taking effect at 7 a.m. on Jan.16, would apply to pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic, he said.

At minimum, the closure would last for two days and up to four to allow the demolition of the former seven-story building to be completed.

Clearly, theyre going to have to close Witherspoon Street to do that, Mayor Liz Lempert said Wednesday.

Crews from AvalonBays demolition company have taken all the other buildings on the property and most of the last one, although their work is weather dependent. If temperatures drop too low, demolition is halted because a misting machine, used to control the spread of dust, cannot be used because the mist turns to snow, Mr. Kiser said.

During this week, there has been limited demolition at the site, Mr. Kiser said.

Also, there cannot be any demolition if there is a blizzard.

Wickes demolition expected to start in spring - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MERRILLVILLE | Work to prepare a property for a new Ashley Furniture location is expected to begin in coming months.

Demolition of the former Wickes Furniture building near U.S. 30 and Mississippi Street should start in the spring to make way for the new Ashley building, said Ryan Marovich, an engineer with DVG.

DVG represented Vequity Stonebridge Merrillville LLC, the developer of the property, during last week's Plan Commission workshop.

Plans are to have the Ashley Furniture location open in November, Marovich said.

The Plan Commission is in the midst of considering approving a one-lot subdivision request for the project, and several Merrillville officials have shown support during recent meetings in which the matter was discussed.

The commission already granted preliminary approval of the request last month, and the panel is expected to act on final a final subdivision request during its Jan. 20 meeting.

In addition to bringing Ashley Furniture to a busy corner of town, two restaurants could eventually locate at the site, town officials said.

As the Ashley Furniture project is being planned, Merrillville is looking at projects to address multiple roads in the commercial area in which the store will open.

The towns Redevelopment Commission recently approved an agreement with First Group Engineering, which will complete design and engineer work for the improvements.

One of the road projects sets outs to enhance the flow of traffic on 79th Avenue in the commercial area and improve access to businesses there.
