Dixie Outlet Mall, a south Mississauga landmark since 1956, is not slated for demolition, its new owner says.

There is no status quo in retail. But there is great potential in Dixie Mall, said Guy Charron, executive vice-president of operations at Cominar Real Estate Investment Trust that bought the mall.

The mall will evolve. Our strong preference is to maintain the location as a retail location. This is not an acquisition for demolition. This is to maintain and to increase.

In a massive deal finalized last fall, Cominar, one of the largest diversified real estate investment trusts in Canada and the largest commercial property owner and manager in Quebec, acquired Dixie Mall and 13 other shopping centres, office buildings and industrial properties from another Quebec real estate heavyweight, Ivanho Cambridge, for $1.24 billion.

The other acquisitions are in Quebec and Toronto.

Cominar now owns more than 560 office, retail, and industrial buildings, totalling 45.4 million square feet, including the 416,000-square-foot Dixie mall location on South Service Road.

Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey said he believes the Citys Official Plan, established to guide the citys growth and development to the year 2031, allowed for further intensification on the site.

Its a viable mall and it seems to be very successful, he said. I would think any redevelopment would have to be mixed use and include a mall.

Cominar will have to explore adding new tenants, Charron said, but the company has not approached any of the malls more than 100 tenants to indicate their leases wont be renewed. The goal for the immediate future, he said, is to maintain the malls current set-up, although he added some leases are up for renewal this year and in 2016.

This was welcome news to Maribel Magnaye, who manages Canadian bedding chain Quilts Etc. inside the mall.

Construction crews will demolish the 92nd Street bridge overnight Thursday. In order to perform the work, Interstate 94 traffic will be shut down between the zoo and 76th Street.

While drivers may be inconvenienced for seven hours, neighbors could endure another sleepless night filled with construction noise.

"It's endless," said Jacob Scepanski, who lives near the project. "You need a helicopter to get out of here."

"Just living next to the highway with no sound wall, you've gotten used to it over the years," said Mike Kirby, who also lives near the project.

For those who might have trouble sleeping because of the noise, the Department of Transportation sent a gift in the mail: A set of earplugs.

"I'll be fine, but everybody else in the house will be up," Scepanski said.

The 92nd Street bridge will be rebuilt to accommodate the widening of I-94 below it.

The new bridge is expected to open in late 2015.

"The residents of the area have for long beencomplaining about the chaos and traffic build up there due tothe ramp. Thus, I have written a letter to BrihamumbaiMunicipal Corporation Commissioner Sitaram Kunte to demolishthat illegal ramp. We need to look at this issue legally andlawfully follow the procedures as we are supposed to do as agovernment," Mahajan told PTI today.

According to the letter written on January 29, anillegal ramp constructed by "one bungalow owner" has beencausing "permanent obstruction to people accessing the publicroad."

"The ramp is known to be used by the bungalow owner topark his private heavy motor vehicle. In view of the safetyand convenience of citizens, I request you to undertakedemolition of the illegal ramp on cement road," the letterstated.

The ramp has for long been in the eye of a storm, withresidents alleging that it prevents them from using a part ofthe road and blocks the way to the stairs that lead up toMount Mary church.
